From historical facts we know it was actually destroyed by Portuguese Soldiers only !!! It was accidentally rediscovered by them while they were invading the Konkani Coast of Indian, Islam had nothing do with it simply because they didnt know it existed!!! Portugal is responsible for this Damage !!!

Why archaeology survey of India doesn't reconstruct all mutilated statues all over India? It will add to beauty of the places. The Buddhist statues were mutilated by Hindus, the Hindu statues were mutilated by Muslims and so on. Government of India doesn't want to reconstruct them to keep sense of communal division burning.
