Some people's accents don't go away when they sing, but I guess it's due to enunciation being really important for singing and people associate increased enunciation with a standard American accent so that's probably why.

I know this is a late reply but I always thought it actually worked the other way. We get sort of British accents when we sing because annunciating makes our 'aaa' sounds sound like 'ah'. Similarly, if you try singing a word really high key with an r in it you may notice your drop the r sound. I do.
