This was a lot of fun and there was some lovely, subtle acting by Jess Bush and Ethan Peck at the end. Methinks someone is starting to have a few……misgivings, about the life he has mapped out for himself, all signalled by a little facial quirk as his fiancée tells him how well she “knows” him. Also loved the reaction of Spock to T’Pring advising him about her reading material……so funny. Loved our villain chewing up the scenery too. Also, REST!!! You’ve had surgery, you need to heal.

Vulture magazine online had an article between two of their writers (both ST fans) discussing how much they love SNW. I recommend reading it if you have the chance. In the chat afterward, some fans discussed how much the make or break of the show is centered around the Captain and which personalities the past Captains Pike embodies. For my two cents, I think PIke is more like Sisko than Kirk or Picard. There is a lot of Sisko in Pike. Like Sisko, Pike is a man who enjoys cooking and communal meals with the crew. He jokes, he smiles, and he teases them. Pike has Sisko's family man quality as a Captain, even if he does not have a family himself. Pike is haunted by knowing his future and Sisko is haunted by the loss of his wife and his responsibility to his son. And then when he is Captain of DS9, Sisko is conflicted by his responsibility to Starfleet and to Bajor as their Emissary. Pike has to deal with his concern that his future might conflict with his responsibilities to his crew. Will his judgment be compromised? And like Sisko, Pike starts out wondering if he even wants the responsivity of being a captain given all that's he's been through. Pike and Sisko are multidimensional leaders. As Spock might say, I find them both fascinating.

I did not have Sybok on my SNW bingo sheet. The idea for his character was always strong it was the execution that let it down. You can see that in the McCoy pain scene, which is astonishingly emotional and hits me hard to this day.
@Blazingstoke2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that scene is gold.
@bcwest6192 жыл бұрын
I loved the quick mention of him, but I really hope they don't bring him on beyond that. Honestly, the best thing about SY:V is the development of his character, and giving more of his backstory, in my opinion, could walk a VERY thin line. Done perfectly could be interesting and add to his story, but any deviation from perfect storytelling might ruin the best part of one of the weakest ST movies. (Not hating on ST:V, I actually like it)
@DoinItforNewCommTech2 жыл бұрын
I strongly believe that The Final Frontier is the best Trek movie with the worst plot McCoy euthanizing his father was just *chef's kiss* As well as the general dynamic between the crew Sybok was SUCH a compelling villain with SO MUCH presence, but oh man his whole master plan was just awful So glad that we FINALLY might get a redemption for the guy (not in the "becomes good" sense, but in the "Sybok with good writing" sense)

Pike starting a mutiny by cooking is possibly one of the most hilarious things ever but I guess no matter what species you are, food is the way to everyone’s heart 😂 I did giggle at the whole Pike being a Boy Scout thing because I did not forget this was the same man who literally did a mutiny with the Disco crew when Federation was after Spock lol 😆 that man is not a Boy Scout, he is a mutiny starter, I see Michael and the Disco crew rubbing off on him 😝 Captain Angel is such a fascinating character and I’m really hoping we get to keep seeing them as this recurring character. A part of me was worried with the reveal at first because introducing a nonbinary character to only have them be revealed as a villain kinda read to me as tone deaf, but the fact that they did not die and they are connected to Sybok and they have a reason for what they do and isn’t just a villain for villain’s sake does make me feel better because there is room for growth and depth, which is important. It’s not that I don’t think marginalized groups can’t ever play villains but just that those villains are allowed the same kind of depth that the typical white guy villains get to have. Anyways, I love that SNW is giving nods to both Kirk and Spock’s generally unloved and underrated siblings - I need Sybok and Sam to meet!!

I did not think they could top the 'high jinks' of Spock Amok, but here we are. It's joyful, it felt a bit like an episode of Lower Decks where what would normally be the A-plot of Pike escaping the pirates is almost done off screen and is definitely played for laughs. The action aboard the Enterprise is tenser and more emotionally involving, until Captain Angel reveals themselves to be a villain and does full on over the top villain acting for the rest of the episode. High note was the almost fourth wall breaking "c'mon how are you falling for that?". But as usual packed with tiny details that shows the entire production team is playing at the top of their game.

Aspen/Angel was so good. It’s been too long since Star Trek had a proper over-the-top, scenery chewing antagonist. My one regret is that I accidentally spoiled the big reveal at the end by looking at Twitter too much. It was still fun, though!

The first Star Trek episode I ever watched was when I was eight years old. It was the first airing of The Next Generation with the weird brain worms and the possessed ambassadors. Months later, I watched Star Trek for the second time ever, and it was a rerun of that episode. The first Star Trek movie I ever saw was Star Trek V, aired on TV, with commercials. I recorded it on VHS and watched it over and over. I wasn't old enough to really discern the absurdity of it. As a fundamentalist evangelical, there were themes that struck me pretty deep as a kid. As an adult, I'd say it is fair that my intros to Star Trek were not the best of the franchise. But they were my introductions. And I'm still here.

Only nitpick that bugged me: after Spock told us that a message to Starfleet would take 2 days from where they were, Angel calls T'Pring on Vulcan and communicates with her real-time. OOPS. But overall, this was about the best episode of the show so far! Too fun :) Loved Pike's pirate impersonation & Number One's reaction :)
@devifoxe2 жыл бұрын
Not really. Starfleet don't have any subspace really there. Angel have organize everything probably have install some of them around to make the communication possible.
@thedoctor7552 жыл бұрын
@@devifoxe I think I understand that :) Well, I won't argue about how subspace is supposed to work, but if the Enterprise can't get a signal back, I'm not sure how one ship of pirates would accomplish that. Using logic :)
@OllamhDrab2 жыл бұрын
@@devifoxe That actually would make sense that Angel would have had to *arrange* for that ransom note to be delivered.... Also wherever that 'penal colony' was it wasn't in the Vulcanis system, if I recall, so it may well have been closer?
@SlimThrull2 жыл бұрын
@@OllamhDrab That's really the only way to make it work. However, for it to be THAT close still stretches plausibility. Why would a rehabilitation center be so far out in Federation space? The writers' kind of wrote themselves into a corner. There's really not a great way to save it. (Aside from maybe space mushrooms.)

@@thedoctor755 we see them use the laser web and what is appears to be a "cloak" shuttle so yes probably what technology they use is better than federation

The best part of the episode still has to be Pike doing a pirate voice and saying that they'll make Captain Angel walk the plank, followed by Number One pleading, "Please stop." I also love how they've embraced camp on this show. Previous series usually seem nervous or even afraid to embrace what made Classic Trek a lasting cultural phenonomen. This one really just goes for it.

Can we talk about how she had on the evil villain catsuit before the reveal? lol, just picked up this show last week, and boy am I glad I held off, it's been fun binging these!

I really loved how they got control of the pirate ship. Watching the manipulation was so much more fun than if they had just fought their way out :D (just wandering 'cause since I first saw it I couldn't get the why of it: When they put Pike back into the cage he looks kinda ... drunk? Or like he really took something to the head. Why?) That pirate impression. Una's face makes me think that this wasn't in the script XD

I agree with you on every point, although I think you missed a comment, even as the pirate Captain Angel, they were still actually highly insightful and gave legitimate advise to Spock. Clearly they think highly of Spock, I mean they are dating his brother, so family kind of.

I’m trans female. So happy to see this episode. Of course Aspen’s talk with Spock about his human/Vulcan binary view vs finding himself somewhere in between is a trans identity theme. Loved it. And to think the writers took Spock 1960s into gender identity parallel topics of 2022 update and to advance the political implications of our time just like Star Trek dealt with Racism issues of the 1960’s….. 💋 💋💋
