I was a palliative care nurse in peoples' homes for a number of years. I recall two particular people who built legacy pieces like this for their children before they died. One wrote 50 letters. These things happen in real life. This episode hits on a very deep, raw level for me. Beautiful.

I remember the time that I watched this episode with my boyfriend. We are in college and it was our breaktime. Then we decided to watch it in library using my phone and earphones. When we started to realize that those letters were given to Ann in the future, tears fell down my eyes but I tried to hold it in because it was embarrasing to cry in public. Then I failed when Violet cried. I could not hold myself anymore and literally I was crying like an idiot. I checked my boyfriend's face and he was crying uncontrollably that people started to look at us. We didn't expect that this episode is such a tear-jerk at all.

According to the LN and the wiki fandom of Violet Evergarden, Ann's father never stayed at home and didn't work so much, prospering in taking over the family's main business. He didn't even visit Ann's mother when she was ill. And when he would visit, he only visits the house just to get something valuable (vases and paintings) and sell it for money and Ann hated him. After Ann's mother passed away, she never saw her father again and had merely just exchanged two or three words at her mother's funeral. Her father never visited the house again to take any valuable items to sell cuz his recklessness was over. Although Ann didn't directly asked the reason her father to change this mindset of his, she believed it had to be a good one. This implies Ann's feelings for her father is changed a bit at least but in the anime, Ann supposedly had a good relationship with her father and admires him for dying as a hero in the war....

The parts where Ann is sad yet upset at her mother for not spending time with her. The part where Violet plays with Ann, comforting her while knowing the fact that her mother will be gone soon. Me too, I started yesterday and just finished the first season. I knew about it when it first came out but got discouraged by the age gap. Then I learned that it’s kind of sad so I avoided it even more. Yesterday I stumbled on the music video of anohana (secret base) on KZbin and that brought back a lot of tears and memories. So I thought to myself, if I could handle anohana, there should be no reason for me to avoid this, and BOI, I balled my eyes out on this episode. The age gap didn’t even matter anymore, since romance wasn’t even the main point of this anime, I’m not even sure if the relationship between major and violet is romantic or familial. Overall, 10/10, especially episode 10.

I just have to accept the fact that I will always cry at this part.. keep in mind I never cry at movies or tv shows.. UPDATE (01/08/21) I still cried.. but luckily not as much as last time but it still made me realize how we love our parents.. even though we may not say it much.. I’m genuinely grateful for everything they do.. and I know one day they’ll go away.. I’m happy for everything that they do for me.. UPDATE: (05/21/21) I can’t even remember.. is it the fifth or sixth time I watched this scene… STILL SOBBED LIKE A BABY.. I couldn’t hold back my tears.. I think I need to face the fact and I can’t watch this episode without crying my heart out… UPDATE: (01/08/22) I tried again.. still no avail.. I think I may never not cry during this scene because of the impact it still has on me.. but it's still a gorgeous scene.. I needed a good cry so I guess every once in a while I watch this just to cry out my tears.. You might still get updates every once in a while loyal viewer.. but I guarantee you this.. I will always cry to this scene... UPDATE: (06/14/22): So uh.. Im back.. didn’t cry nearly as much but still cried… this episode is probably the best episode I’ve seen in any anime.. it’s so bittersweet but I love it.. if I need a good cry I come back to this scene.. this scene is just gorgeous.. so yeah.. Idk when I’ll come back to update this but it’ll probably be soon! Stay safe! UPDATE: (04/11/23) Hey. I guess some of you guys are still here. And big shocker, I still cried. But I think this scene is so impactful in a sense that at anytime our loved ones could go away, but we should love them with all our hearts in the meantime. Hug your mom. Hug your dad. Hug your siblings. Hug your grandparents. They all deserve love and spend time with them while they’re still on earth with you. UPDATE: (11/02/23) Hey guys. Holy crap I still can’t believe some of y’all are still here looking at my own personal diary. But yeah I did cry again but not as much as I usually do. I’m getting older and I feel like it still hurts but at the same time I’m also getting more independent so that scene doesnt hurt as much anymore but I still shed at least one tear. I could never imagine my life without my mom but as I become more and more independent I realize that I can but it’s still gonna hurt when that day comes.

It's like my 6th time back watching this episode, and I still cried. Honestly my only regret is not watching violet evergarden sooner, I'd pay a fortune to wipe my memory and watch episode 10 for the first time again. Still cried really hard, but after so many times now I just embrace and accept the crying. In fact I enjoy crying to this.

Seeing Violet break is what cements this as one of the greatest episodes in anime. It’s such a sweet episode, she refused to make a sound knowing what was happening and held it in but finally, even though she was at one point a tool for war, she broke. It was painful to watch but also beautiful as well.

What really gets me everytime is when the daughter complained about how her mother was not playing with her and just wasted her time on her room talking with Violet the whole day without even knowing what's really happening. But her mother was actually preparing letters for the upcoming days, months and years that she will no longer be by her daughter's side, reassuring her that she will watch over her. She wrote the letters with excitement and believed that her daughter will live just fine even without her by her side.

This is a follow up post to a comment I made 4 years ago to a deleted Violet video: Thank you to all of you who wished me well, I am doing better now, in my own place, graduated from college, working from home with my dog. “A LOVED ONE WILL ALWAYS WATCH OVER YOU” I am eternally grateful for Violet Evergarden. When the anime first came out back in Winter I did not give it much thought to watch it. My mother passed away back in June of this year and I had to deal with her death, giving up my dog, leaving my house, and doing an internship before my last year of college. Because I didn’t allow myself to grieve I became secluded and depressed. One day in September back in college I decided for some reason to watch it and every episode was emotionally impactful for me. Episode 10 hit so emotionally hard because of how close to home and fresh my wound was when I watched the ending of that episode. Every time I cried I was able to let out all of my emotional pain and I always rewatch that episode when I feel sad about my mother. I believe it was meant for me to watch Violet Evergarden when I watched it. It helped so much in my healing process and it will forever have a place in my heart as one of my favorite anime’s of all time. LOVE YOU VIOLET. LOVE YOU MOTHER
