@UberGamingHD same. Honestly the part where Anne raged herself out on her mother because she didn't spare some time for her broke me as well. I thought those letters were supposed to be sent for medical help or whatever so that she could live her life longer but they are actually letters for Anne to read when she could no longer be by her side.

I'm so glad Violet didn't just turn out to be the typical Kuudere. The scene when she finally understood what Hodgins meant when he said, "Realize you're body is on fire, and burning up", blew me away!

I understood what Hodgins meant when he first said it. But damn, i forgot about it till that scene and it hit me like a mac truck. Also the symbolism in the last episode of the fire going out in the tear/rain drop showing Violet is no longer burning. Took me a bit to realize it because, well lets face it we were all crying and couldnt see anything.

For what i have seen of violet evergarden os about finding yourself, violet tries to give her life a purpose, or 'mission' as she becomes an auto memory doll. You stressed this toppic very well in your vídeo about facing disappointment as a car enthusiast. Keep up the good work mate

As a veteran of war (Afghanistan) this anime really hit me hard. Its my new favorite anime. I can really relate to Violet and her long road back from her violent past. The most powerful scene for me was when she asks her boss if she had a right to live after everything she had done in the war. Its something i ask myself daily since coming back.

@sir troll. You are the worst type of shit there is. You know nothing about what this person did, saw, or experienced. You have no idea, the sacrifices he has made, or the burdens he carries. To say that you hate what he did, when you dont even know, and when he willingly traded his happiness to protect his country, makes you an awful, soulless human being. Leave your politics somewhere else and try to have a little bit of compassion.

@aj Furguson, I'm a veteran of OIF 3 and 4. I dont know what happened to you over there. Whether you regret something you did, or didn't do. Or if you feel guilt because you survived when your friends didn't. But from one veteran to another. Its okay that you lived. Its okay to forgive yourself. And it's alright to allow yourself to heal. Move forward with your life, not inspite of those we lost, but in honor of them.

As a veteran of the US Army (1991-2013) and longtime anime fan, I have never been so moved as I was with this show. I so hope this program gets more promotion as not just a good anime, but as a way to teach family and friends of a member of the military of the changes they will encounter; covering both Violets’ struggle with being an amputee and her mental health issues. The episode that touched me the most was the one with the veteran who need a crutch to get around. Seeing a character dealing with both mobility issues and Survivor's remorse brought be back to when I was medically retired from the Army. Seeing Violet go from being this cold and emotionless person to someone, who is able to open up and share her feeling, reflects how many come to cope with the pain of things seen and actions taken in deployments across the globe. And yes, I too was brought to tears many times. As a side note, there is a new single episode added to Netflix. (labeled Violet Evergarden special and not included as part of the first season)

I stumbled onto Violet Evergarden by chance without knowing anything about it at all. As a Vietnam Vet Medic with a Bronze Star (yes, I’m an old man) it had me in the first few minutes. Seeing what they did within those minutes I knew the potential of what was likely going to unfold. And it did. No, I didn’t cry. But each episode that I binge watched captured me more and more. Humans are such amazing creatures. How we can allow the complete suspension of the reality that this is a “cartoon” world and let her have a life that affects our emotions so very deeply is amazing. I think this hits harder if the viewer has lost a parent or sibling or another they truly loved. The more human experience one has just gives Violet more to work with. A lost love...a hungered after relationship that never happened...something that hurt you or if you hurt someone and regretted it...and on and on...the painful things that happen to us as humans...the writers, artists and actors bring the emotion of past experiences to make the story and characters real. We don’t have to have had a military experience for Violet to affect us deeply. Our lives are the war and the battlefield that allows us to relate to Violet. Violet is truly a thing of beauty and a special achievement.

It's because most people hold onto the preconceived notion that cartoons, and anything that's animated, are primarily for children. They believe that animation can only tell childish stories for young children. When that's not the case at all, and you can have everything under the sun be animated.
@kenohki3492
@kenohki3492 4 жыл бұрын
Quite honestly, somewhere between wartime cartoons (the violent Looney Tunes and earlier) and now, animation became (at least in the USA) regarded as a genre rather than a medium. Meaning, when you heard "cartoons" or "animation" it led a person to immediately think "children" "childish" instead of a method of expressing genres (a medium like film, television, animation). Other cultures continued using animation as a medium. This all sounds better in my head...

My grandpa fought in the Second World War and well anime was something he kinda bonded with me. Pokémon, dragon ball, Naruto. All of that he’d sit with me and watch. The first episode hyped me up and he entered hospice care feeling his time was up. Weekly new episodes were what I watched with him next to his bed. Then he passed and episode eleven came by, and that hit me hard. The soldier passing along with my grandpa. Sometimes he’d tap the screen of the iPad and pause it tell me what it was like during the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines and what happened after, he commanded a tank and well there in that metal box he lost his comrades escaping with his loader to become a guerrilla and freeing Bataan. But well thanks to Kyoani we connected in those final moments. It’s sad to know that one of those over thirty people dead may have helped that and I can’t see anymore do their work. But maybe they’re with my Grandpa and he’s telling them his stories.

Is it just me to realize that the theme of empathy in this show was masterfully ironic? I mean think about it. The reason we all cried so hard on this show was because it dragged us, the viewers, into its own plot. As if we were part of the story somehow. I did not realize how we were on a journey with Violet herself until the last episode, were it was hard to say goodbye to such an inspirational masterpiece.

This show broke me. Episode 10 absolutely devastated me not because I lost my mother and can relate to the feelings (my mom is still alive and well, and I hope that she remains that way for as long as fate allows), but because the empathy I felt for these characters was real. It wasn't just characters being sad, the show conveyed true grief and communicated to the audience that it is ok to grieve with the characters and that what you're feeling is real, even if the characters are not. To be able to create empathy for your audience is something _very_ few anime are able to do. The playwright who lost his daughter and Violet's methods of helping him, culminating in the cathartic moment of his acceptance of his loss was one of the most powerful scenes I think I have ever seen, and even thinking back to that lake has my eyes welling up. The letters to the daughter even more so. Even the written language in the world helps drive it home that this show is about emotion. It's all gibberish. Words alone are meaningless. The true meaning behind the words is the emotion that they convey; the feelings that you want to evoke in other people. That is truly something special.

“Violet killed all of those people for no reason and her newly learned empathy means that she fully understands what those deaths mean. The ep when she writes the letters for her past enemy an couldn't save him. Watching him run for his life an desperately trying tk get away screaming "I don't wanna die!!!!!" Calking out the name of the girl waiting for him at home.....that broke me. That had me texting my bf an needing to hear he was okay an that he loved me, because he plans to hoin the military. The way the animators got the emotions just right were beyond any anime I've ever seen. I now have a new standard for anime.

The hook that Violet wants to understand what the words "I love you" mean seems pretty cheesy at first glance. But damn if this show doesn't do it's all to answer the question with grace, depth, and sincerity. Pretty much every episode is a demonstration of the various special ways that one person can feel love to another. The sister loving her brother in pain, the father loving his lost daughter, the princess growing to love a new husband, the mother's love for a daughter that she has limited time with etc. It's a beautiful show that does a wonderful job showing the depths and varieties of love that we can feel for one another.

@FBI could you please not go with the steryotypical PTSD survivor in this case? I'm not trying to be rude but I think the whole point of the first comment was to say there are more ways to get PTSD other than war. Yes soldiers tend to experience PTSD but other survivors from rape, car wrecks, mass deaths, shoot outs, and other emotionally traumatic situations have their own side-effects and triggers from the trauma. In fact someone close to my family said "You don't have PTSD, you've never been in the military." My bf was close by and he looked shocked by that statement and stated that "Her losing her brother was something traumatic." Which my brother died in a horrible way, and a coverup ended up happening as soon as we saw his dead body. It has left scars in my life, my family, memories, emotions and mind that I still find hard to struggle with. My bf then went on about how he couldn't believe what she said that I couldn't have PTSD, that it's literally in the name post Traumatic stress disorder. And that horrific and traumatic events can happen to anyone at any time. That seeing someone you trust dying in front of you can't just happen in a battle field, that losing multiple limbs and learning to cope with it afterwords can happen in a car wreck, or having a gun pointed at your head as you're being held hostage as a group of thugs robs a place and if you or anyone else makes one wrong move you can die. THESE are the moments nobody talks aboit when it comes to PTSD that needs light to be shone on them too.

Episode 10 really broke me down. I had already cried numerous times watching this series but this particular episode hit at a very vulnerable spot on my heart. I went through something very similar, watching my grandmother write letters for all her grandchildren to receive on their 18th and 21st birthdays as was the tradition in our family. This episode took me right back to those days with my grandma, watching her make preparations for the future she wouldn't be a part of. Even while writing this I'm a crying mess. It's a real testament to this shows writing with how well it can tug on the heartstrings yet still leave the audience enriched by the experience instead of wrung out.

Have you seen the series or episode 10? Without spoiling just in case you haven't been following the series, the main theme of the entire series is an attempt to answer the question, "What is love, and how does love manifest in all its forms?" The basic theme of episode 10 without going into great detail is focused on Motherly Love and the transcendent nature of love. It is a beautiful well-paced episode that has an incredibly emotionally resonant ending.

@kcsupersonic1
@kcsupersonic1 6 жыл бұрын
I don't really know whether or not you are trolling me or not, but if you want me to explain why I felt it was incredibly emotional, I will. I personally resonated with the message present in the title of this episode, "Loved Ones Will Always Watch Over You." Even from the title, you can infer that the main theme of this episode is that true love endures all things. Neither time, nor illness, nor distance nor even death itself have the ability to strip away or negate true love. You see this in the character of the mother, who cares so deeply about her child that she wants to give her daughter to always remember that no matter what time may do to separate them, she will always and forever love and care for her. It is emotional to me, because I understand what it means for a parent to sacrifice and do utterly incomprehensible things for their children. I related to the child who could not understand her mother's actions because I've been in that place before as a kid. I also relate to the mother because I understand what it means for someone to love unconditionally and completely. Many other fans of this episode will likely tell you something similar, but unless you have some sort of connection to the theme of this episode, you won't understand why it is emotional.

Violet's character progression over such a short series is incredible. She changes so much yet it feels so natural and smooth. What happens in episode 10 seems almost impossible to envision based on who she was in the first few episodes. With how stunning the visuals are in the show, its incredible that the artwork isn't the most beautiful element to witness.

@@antonhallergren588 It certainly helps that the story takes place over a year, but the real reason why it feels so smooth is because each episode served a specific purpose to build up Violet's character development. From learning how to use her arms, to learning how to write properly, to learning how to convey others' emotions, in an increasingly complex manner, and slowly start understanding her own because of that. It's meticulously crafted to feel as natural as possible through countless interactions, to me it's the best part of the show, and the only one that really matters in the end.

The anime was able to accomplish in thirteen episodes what the novels do in two books. I believe it is because of the timeframe given, since the novel can be as long as the author wishes, though a series is limited by time and number of episodes. Her development is more obvious in the anime, because the audience views events from her perspective, whereas the novels take on that of the people she meets and narrate their thoughts on her. There was also never a scene in the book where Violet experiences grief, like the vivid portrayal in episode 8-9. Her grief was expressed in conversations she’s had with others; when she was talking to Cattleya in the chapter The Flying Letters (Part 1). That was when readers saw her actual thoughts towards Major Gilbert and her hidden sadness. We do learn of her growth when she speaks to Lux on how she “wanted to learn about and understand the words [she] had been told”, in The Demigod, but she stays true to her endearing self. The greatest difference is in her ability to empathise and understand emotions, both hers and others’, which the anime and novels portray beautifully.

As someone with Diagnosed PTSD (childhood sexual trauma), this show has hit home every episode, especially 8-10. I am someone who sees far far too much of herself in Violet. For several years I could not convey emotions the same way others could, and learning how to become a functioning individual without influence from the time in my life where I was literally used as a doll is fucking impossible. Dealing with and coming to terms with what you've lost and the disgusting inhumane things you did when you had no sense of right and wrong because you didnt have a choice is the defining struggle of the lives of people like Violet and the lives of most of- if not- all survivors of severe lifealtering trauma. This show has done a fantastic job, and there hasnt been an episode where I didnt need to lie down for a good cry after watching.

I feel for you. As someone with major depression and anxiety from my childhood, I understand part of your pain. I don't know if it will help but I learned about Nun's who were horribly raped in Central and South America who thanks to prior belief were able to survive without emotional damage. In your case of course damage already done but maybe this could still help. This is one concept that the church and others teach, I find Buddhist similar thoughts. The concept is "nothing is disgusting if you're forced to do it", the acts are only disgusting if you choose freely to do them, you can only make yourself dirty and wrong when it is forced it is their problem, not yours. I told you the official doctrine of the church that these nuns must have known well. Civilian members of the Catholic church and old beliefs of the church still linger in membership that would teach shame to the victim similar to what public opinion often does.

Colin Graham So it takes roughly about 3/4 of a piece of entertainment for it to really reach "greatness"? Not like I'm bashing Violet Evergarden, I liked most of what I've seen 3/4 eps but irl took over so dropped it for now but... This anime is gonna have 14 eps. And you claim "wow meh 10 episode investment finally paid off"
@AngyIronman
@AngyIronman 6 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't need the 10 episodes to be great. Each episode ranges from very good to great although you may need to see each episode through to the last scene for it to pay off an individual episode. But episode 10 has a whole other level of pay off. As Geoff said, you learn about Violet by watching her interact with people who have problems that reflect her own and you build your relationship with her subconsciously each episode. This isn't a game of dungeons and dragons where you get handed a new fully fleshed out character sheet in episode 1, this is you growing a character from nothing, watching them grow and experiencing life vicariously through them after a few campaigns.

As an abuse victim (recovering), I saw this series in a whim mere weeks after escaping the household and people that were abusing me. I felt connected with Violet from moment 1 as my coping mechanisms were very similar to those she seems to have during the war, aka. Removing emotions or pushing them aside for enough time to forget how they feel anymore, reducing of food intake for security, always vigilant, etc. This is a must watch to anybody that wants to know how the other side of PTSD is like. The quiet one, the one for the people that, unlike I've seen (almost) everywhere else, most people don't "count" as PTSD, be it because you're not having an eternal panic attack, or because you didn't fight back so your trauma "doesn't count". (These claims happen mostly when it's abuse and not war. But it can happen both ways.) I personally have this anime in the back of my mind whenever someone doesn't understand why I do the things I do. Why don't you show emotion? I've learned not to, for security. Why don't you talk much? Talking gives possible enemies info. about you, while listening can give you an advantage. It's difficult and I need to unlearn them, for sure, but if anyone asks me to explain my ways, Violet Evergarden is the best way for outsiders to understand. Have a nice day, if you've made it this far! Thank you for reading. Edit: (11-11-20) I'm an adult now, always advancing and learning, now my abusers have no longer possible power over me. I am truly, finally, free.

I can relate to this so much. I am not a victim of abuse, but while trying to cope with a difficult episode of depression, unrelenting suicidal thoughts and casual belief that I did not matter at all I subconsciously disconnected myself from from all the people I love - emotionally. I learned how to occupy myself and learned to enjoy being alone rather than feel lonely and unwanted, somehow blocked out most of the negative thoughts that drove me to that but now, years later, I'm struggling to re-learn how to establish that emotional connection. So many things that seem natural to my friends are so foreign to me that I feel like an alien sometimes. I'm by no means stoic, but most of what I present to the world in terms of personality is mostly surface level. That's why I could personally relate to Violet almost instantly, because to a certain extent I felt similarly emotionally stunted. I'm happy I found a comment I could really relate to. Thanks for sharing it

Kratos I can totally respect your opinion. That was a great story no doubt. Actually, I saw a gif of Violet jumping the lake, and that hooked me to the show. 7 is a great episode, but 10 for me is the most heartbreaking because of the build up emotions for the young daughter and coming to terms with the tragedy. 11 is a close second for heartbreaking moments in the show
@ryantheanimator1156
@ryantheanimator1156 6 жыл бұрын
James Belza I think why EP 10 didn't have much impact to me was the idea that a child about to lose their parents due to terminal illness have, well, been done to death already that I already predicted how it gonna end. This is no stranger in anime and there's an entire movie about it called "A Monster Calls". What made episode 7 extremely heart-wrenching for me was seeing the writer's daughter, a little girl who had a short live life and never got to experience the world fully, and have to suffer an illness that literally left me balled my eyes with tears because of how painful it was to see her in such a state. Just the idea of your children gone before you do, at least for me, is 10X more depressing to think about. Not trying to discredit what EP 10 did, but EP 7 really needs more recognition not only it has one of the most memorable animation sequence of "Violet walks on water like Jesus", but also the emotion and how it made us care for a character that's not even alive anymore (whenever I think of Ep7 I can't hold my tear back)😭.
@BsideYuki
@BsideYuki 6 жыл бұрын
Kratos Oh I agree seeing how much Olivia (I believe is the writer's daughter) gets to miss out on life due to the same illness as the dude's wife is sad. Not to mention how much we are shown that Olivia takes it in stride. Like why is she still smiling when she is dying?? Doesn't it hurt? And what makes 7 sad for me is how much the writer lost, his wife and his daughter, two people he loved from possibly the same illness. It's so unfair to him 😭 But to defend my love for 10, I know it's a story that's been done to death and yeah it's easy to predict, but to me that's not the point. What's funny is that the daughter also knows about her mom's illness even though they haven't told her explicitly. In the same regard as 7, we are shown how death and illness affects the family and people cope with death. And to leave 50 letters for the next 50 years is just magnificent, especially how they handled those scenes. Also, seeing Violet cry just makes me cry like in episode 11

"It's hard to connect with the emotionless Violet." Actually, she isn't emotionless at all. She has a very subtle emotional palette that's also very limited in most cases. Coming from an autistic person with complex-PTSD, Violet is *the definitive reason to watch*. Everything from her confused struggles to understand her own emotions and those of her peers to her precious moments of oral fixation (handling her gloves with her teeth and mouthing her brooch and plushie) is all deeply relatable. Perhaps those who say she is hard to connect with are people who are allistic and lack the kind of trauma that erodes your sense of self on every level.
@animelvr329
@animelvr329 3 жыл бұрын
I haven’t personally been through those struggles, but in my opinion, Violet herself was ABSOLUTELY the driving force of the show for me from the first moments she was on screen. The writers do an incredible job of immediately endearing you to her, since you can clearly see how deep her trauma must run to put her in the mental and emotional state we first meet her in. Even though I didn’t have the life experiences necessary to connect to her on a personal level, I cared about her as a character very deeply and was very invested in her story and what her growth would be like. Violet melts my heart ;-;

As someone who also has autism, I can see how the show's presentation of Violet is applicable. Not a direct parallel but heavily applicable. Especially since, when people say someone has an empathy issue, it can be either they can't understand or they're too invested. However, this show gives me all the vibes of All Quiet on the Western Front; a novel about a teenager who enlisted in WW1. He and his friends barely have long term ideas for what they want to do after the war since they've only known home and school, there's the traumatic experiences of seeing others die and, if they get to go home, they can't even relay what they've been through since the civilians may never get it aside from those who truly know them.

@@tomebasic2843 A lot of anime is much more plot than character focused. Viewers might be used to more end of the world stakes rather than intimate, personal stories. Plus, for some reason, saying a character is not relatable is seen as a valid criticism in anime. @@christopherbennett5858 Idk I found Violet extremely endearing from the first episode. But in terms of relatability I've had the hardest time relating to Miyamoto Musashi from Vagabond because I thought he was a violent bloodthirsty psychopath. Oddly enough I instantly liked Thorfinn's character from Vinland Saga despite the fact that on a surface level they have a lot in common. Even the overall message of the story is similar. Yet I find most characters from Vinland saga very, very human and relatable while a lot of the characters from Vagabond just feel like psychopaths. Heck, the most relatable character for me in the entire story is probably the deaf-mute Sasaki Kojiro. The guy that doesn't even have a voice to give sound to his thoughts, the guy with basically 0 inner monologue to express his thoughts. Yet Violets feelings are pretty much spelled out to the audience through the various people she meets through the journey, and they are like: "Nah, I just don't get it bruv" despite the synopsis of the story pretty much spelling out that what she feels is hidden in the story of the people she meets along the way.

I’d only really heard about the stunning animation when I finally got around to watching Violet Evergarden, so I decided to get my mom to watch it with me. She’s never watched an anime series before, but she thinks Studio Ghibli’s movies are beautiful masterpieces for their animation, so I figured VE would at least be a treat to her eyes even if she didn’t decide to stick with the whole show. Hoo boy, did I ever underestimate how much she’d come to care for it. She ended up being the one to suggest that we watch it if it had been a while, and she’d be the one to urge “hey, let’s watch one more.” And oh BOY when we got to Episode 10? Sitting there and watching this beautiful tribute to a mother/daughter relationship *with my mom*?? We were both sobbing afterwards, and had to take a break to just cry in each other’s arms before pushing forward to Ep 11 (which proceeded to also make us cry, though not quite as much). I’ve been blessed enough to never lose anyone to war, so I didn’t relate to the trauma and grief of the characters outside of my own experiences with losing loved ones, but this story still touched me and my mom in a way that we never expected. Another piece of media that deals beautifully with veterans coming home from war and struggling to reintegrate into everyday society is the musical Bandstand. I saw it at a screening of the show, not live, but it rendered me and my friends into sobbing messes. The pain of the soldiers really punches through, and you get the sense that the band the veterans form is the only thing holding them together. I dunno if the performance recording is available, but if it is, I can’t recommend it enough!

This show is not just an amazing story, but it also has other great elements like its soundtrack and visuals. Not only does the show have these great aesthetic features, but it also carries a powerful messages with almost every episode. In addition, every episode succeeds in getting me attached to characters, and or a story, to the point where I might cry by the end of the episode. This was the first show I’ve found were I cried not only at the end, but throughout the story because of one overwhelming emotion or another. I love anime that make me cry. Ep 7, 10, and 11 hit me with so many feels😭 Honestly every episode was sad, but at the same time beautifully emotional. The ost is beautiful. The art style is beautiful. The story is beautiful. All in all, Violet Evergarden is a beautiful show that will live on as a beautiful memory.

I've been watching anime for 5 years now. Not once has one made me cry as hard as I did or empathize so much for the main character as Violet Evergarden did. This story, at least in my opinion, is a masterpiece and is easily become one of my all-time shows. I can't recommend this enough.

4:10 Why am I crying at a clip with no audio, having never watched the show before?! TT.TT Edit: Wow, I ended up crying through most of this video. With how long I bawled after episode 4 of Angel Beats, The Wind Rises, and the three times I cried during and after Your Name, I’m kinda scared of how I’ll be able to handle Violet Evergarden -.-

I cried almost every episode when I watched Violet Evergarden, it's hard to put what I'm feeling into words but it's really just a one of a kind anime. I'd say that it's one of the best anime that has ever been made.

The part that makes me believe in the story's realism is how Violet actually goes about handling her environment. From her war experience, she has an insane ability to listen to instructions and be direct with her team. It's this that makes her such a good automemoir doll, not really in the traditional sense that she writes out exactly what her clients say rather than what they mean like in one of the first few episodes, but rather that she overcomes that and is able to expose the truth behind how people feel through her directness. For me it's relatable because I tend to open up with people when they're more direct and listen intently to the few things I tend to have to say. It makes a connection far stronger when you actually seem to care. tl dr; Violet is a great automemoir doll because of her war experience. It makes her feel much more realistic and relatable

Made the mistake(?) of watching the whole show in one day. I've never watched anything that made me feel so many different emotions. I cried tears of joy for Charlotte, tears of sorrow for Oscar, and tears of bittersweet happiness for Ann. I don't believe I'll ever watch a show that made me feel like this one did.

Violet Evergarden is truly a master piece. Beautifully written and animated, it helped me to overcome some of the grief I still have over my heart sister taking her life two years ago. I cant remember which episode, but one of them hit me so hard that I was curled up in a ball, weeping for a good solid 5 minutes. It is extremely sad to know that some of the talented artists who worked on this were killed in the arson attack on Kyoto Animation. I pray for their families and hope the survivors can continue their own amazing work.
