YAY JESS!! My friend Ian and I are hoping to move back to NYC this year too! You're gonna love it! A lot of my friends who are still there are in Washington Heights while others are in Astoria, SOHO/NOHO, the Upper East Side (I was in Yorkville when I was there), and some spots in Brooklyn so I recommend checking out listings in those areas. Obviously get yourself a metro card, know where local 24 hour convenient stores are in case of an emergency, and don't forget that museums are pay what you want. Also if you have friends that are looking for roommates/to move apartments, connect with them and see if you and them want to live together. Best of luck to you and hope to see you there.

Congratulations!! I spent my early 20s living and working in NYC! My advice is buy a little fold up shopping cart. They are inexpensive and easy to store and will be a life saver if you need to bring home groceries or take laundry to laundry mat. Hopefully your building will have a laundry center in house but very few new York appts have in unit laundry. I also would recommend a window air conditioner unit. Very few Apts in NYC have central air and you will be grateful during the warm summer months
@JessMedley3 жыл бұрын
VERY HELPFUL thank you!! That little cart is going to come in SOOO handy hahah

Congrats! I am also a former Disney employee turned New Yorker. So some moving to NY tips: download the Citizen app, sign up for Gothamist and Time Out emails to know about current events/ things to do in NY, look into getting a NY State ID for cheap museum access/ library card, make sure you can tap your credits or debit card at a Subway station cause itll save you time and hassle in having to get a MetroPass, sell your car when you can, look into joining Gypsy Housing on FB for roommates if needed and also you can look for rooms on Roomi or even Craigslist (always bring a friend to view), sign up for a cheap gym membership so you always have access to a private bathroom (Planet Fitness is perfect), buy a cart for carrying groceries/laundry.

I am so excited for you! I moved back to NYC in October and it was a great experience, even with the pepperoni pizza! My biggest advice would be to wait to order your furniture until you get to the city. Oftentimes, you will be able to find quality pieces on the street (especially now that everyone and their brother are moving). Also, consider the distance from your apartment to the subway. Keep in mind that you will need to be able to get to midtown easily for auditions :) I’d be happy to chat if you have any other questions!

@@JessMedley i usually hang out with my family near lower manhattan, so these are my recommendations. most of them surround washington square park. at night the park is super beautiful! before the pandemic there would be a ton of performers and artists, i’m not sure about now but if you have the chance, it’s a really relaxing walk. a good restaurant around lower manhattan is oilo e piu, i’ve been there a couple times after having a day in the city. it’s next to a pretty flower shop, and has some outdoor seating too. if you like fries, pommes frites is a little place i go to, they have a ton of interesting sauce options. it’s a tiny squished shop, but the atmosphere feels very warm and friendly. Amorino is a great place to get gelato, they have a rose flavor, which they’re pretty well known for. it’s a must try! another good dessert place is cha’an, they serve japanese desserts in a lovely environment. it’s also a bit squished, but beautifully decorated (you go up to the second floor). not completely sure if they offer seating right now, but if you’re up to try some new desserts it’s a great place to go. the bryant park christmas marketplace is my personal favorite, but that’s not until december. they have a ton of little shops and sweets :) sorry this was so long haha, but i hope you do get to experience some of these!

I moved from California --> Boston 6 years ago. Here's my biggest recommendation: You don't need all the things you think you need. Take only what you're 100% sure you cannot replace in New York. It's tempting to take everything to not have to buy it again; however, the stuff you have now is going to be a) a pain (and expensive) to get there b) probably not going to fit in your new (presumably smaller) apartment and c) easily replaceable with things that fit your new lifestyle better. Bigger cities like NYC & Boston have really really great opportunities for getting really really great things second hand for almost free. A lot of the things you have now will be designed to work with your current lifestyle, with a bigger apartment, driving, and the sun. You may not realize that a lot of that stuff is just non-optimal in the city, and you're going to have it taking up very valuable space in your apartment, and find it very frustrating that you spent all this effort moving it to just get rid of it anyway. It's not worth having to lug it up. Start fresh with only the things you know you 100% need.

Try to get rid of clothes/other things that you haven’t used in a while/don’t serve you anymore. Buy new toiletries/cleaning supplies/pillows. Do not wait to pack your stuff up so you can pack intentionally (putting like things together). Label everything in your boxes (will help with unpacking).
