So her argument for why its not sexual harassment is: 1) she's done it before and no one said anything 2) the team encouraged her and 3) "well other people are doing it too!". I think that it was good PR for a new team (aka they got a lot of eyes on the team). And both he and his wife mentioned that the culture if you are IN hockey is to keep your mouth shut, so the players didn't push back on the PR team's decision to lean into that. It does make me wonder how young the person managing the PR is. I'd be willing to bet money that members of the team (maybe just him, maybe not) finally went to management because the online comments and DMs had reached an unignorable point of sexual harassment and that's why PR had to pull everything down - because even hockey players have legal protection from their employer encouraging sexual harassment.

Maybe it's different in your country but that is not how it works in mine. I mean, if women are taken serious why do MeToo and such things even exist in the first place?

I do think the marketing team screwed up here too. Most PR practitioners/marketing teams don't seem to understand the dynamics of fandoms and parasocial relationships and why interacting with fandoms to gain new followers is often much more trouble than it's worth. Why Kierra made herself into a martyr I do not understand. "But the Kraken have deleted all those videos to try and cover themselves!!!" And?? MAYBE--and stay with me here--it's because they found out that a member of the team they WORK for was uncomfortable with those videos, and decided to delete them out of respect to him and his family???? Just a thought. That being said, the Kraken absolutely should not have played into this whole situation, and I'm sure there are things going on behind the scenes to straighten it all out. For anyone who feels sorry for this girl: Would you say the same if a man had made the same statements about a woman? If not then take a look at your double standards. No one has the right to make overtly (or covertly) explicit sexual comments about another person. Being a celebrity doesn’t make you fair game, and saying “oh I was just joking,” is the common thing for people to do when they don’t want to take blame for bad behavior. Sexual harassment is sexual harassment. She’s at fault for her posts, the team is at fault for encouraging her and flying her out. HE is not at fault for saying enough is enough, and his wife is not at fault for calling Kierra and others of her ilk on their nonsense. As a celebrity, especially a sports one, there is a certain amount of that kind of thing that you’re prepared to deal with. But that doesn’t mean you have to put up with all of it, or that you have to be comfortable with it. It’s disgusting that she tried to make this into a race thing. Maybe other women didn’t hold their leg up to display some of the holes you wanted him to fill. Maybe others didn’t say on a public platform that he should take his mouth guard out so you could put something else in his mouth. Maybe others weren’t making such degrading statements. His being male doesn’t make this ok. It’s just as wrong to sexually harass a man as it is to do it to a woman. A man who did this would have been, at the very least, banned from TikTok, and may have even lost his job. She deserves nothing less. If you don’t know how to act in public then you need to keep quiet in public.

It used to make me so uncomfortable. I work mostly with women, but there were always 2-3 men in the room and you could tell they were uncomfortable too. I wish I had said something at the time. If a man had done that same thing in a public work setting, he would have been in big trouble. I honestly think the worst part here is that the hockey team is getting away with encouraging this young woman to continue posting. They could probably get in legal trouble because the player is their employee, and they were actively encouraging this harassment against him. But, they are a large, wealthy entity, who can afford lawyers to help them navigate and delete posts, etc. And its the individuals (on both sides) who are left dealing with the pain and continued harassment from people sending them comments and hate messages. Anyway, thank you so much for making a video about this. I’ve never realized how widespread this type of objectification is until this controversy. I understand thirsting over someone you find attractive but what happened to group chats? What happened to journals? I couldn’t imagine people saying explicit stuff like that about my partner, them expressing discomfort, and then me not saying anything? Absolutely not.

All sides could have handled this situation better. Kierra is completely out of control and needs mental health counseling. The Seattle Kraken did not handle this situation well. Their social media consultant failed. I do feel bad for the Wennbergs. I wish AW, not his wife, spoke directly to Kierra from the beginning.

If he had she and her following would have seen it as encouragement no matter what he said. Any engagement the victim gives their sexual harasser is always taken as secret encouragement.
@hurricaneofcats Жыл бұрын
I understand why AW hesitated to come forward first. Directly confronting harassers can be intimidating and incredibly uncomfortable and I would never ask a female victim to do the same thing. His wife had a right to say 'this is getting out of hand and this is uncomfortable for us, please stop' because she was being affected as well. Whether it was coming directly from AW or not that should be reason enough to just stop doing it.

I saw the Kraken's original posts and they were flagging booktok but they were just slowmos of the players walking out in their suits. She started the trend with the thirsty over the top catcalling and objectifying of players and then she got pissed when she got called out. I'm white so I admit I might be missing some kind of micro racial nuance but I don't understand why she brought race into it at all. Her videos where the most over the top sexual and I firmly believe that game they flew her put for was a turning point those players heard her for sure and it gave them the ick and talked to management to pull those original thirst posts tagging booktok and it progressed from there.

Yeah Seattle person here and the team was ABSOLUTELY leaning into the whole booktok thing HARD. It's super shitty that they are acting like they didn't??? The individual creators should not be the ones taking the fall here, especially not just a particular Black woman when there were a lot of vids allllll around this during the playoffs. Just a messy situation and agree, everyone should just stop now that any discomfort was expressed by any player. And now I'm gonna need the kraken team to step up and be accountable. And booktok to move on and just be like ok, got it. Come on folks.

I think the most likely scenario is that that’s being dealt with privately between the Wennbergs, team management, and the SM team. Any public statement at this point is just going to add fuel to the fire and make it more newsworthy. This creator clearly isn’t going to shut up about it until she’s run out of fuel. The more it gets talked about publicly, the more the videos will be shared and talked about, and the more harassment for everybody. The best path forward is not always going to be public.

The social media team is in the wrong but Kiara seems like she's okay with putting out this gross content. It must not have seemed wrong to her in the moment. If she raises the standards for what she puts out into the world, she won't deal with these issues. On a side note, why the yelling? I will never follow someone who yells all the time. Also, I know that when my husband and I face a new issue in our life we need time to talk it through and decide how we are going to deal with it, hoping that it will maybe go away or waiting a few days to respond so that we can make sure we are on the same page. There is nothing wrong with changing your response once you have processed the issue.

There’s nothing I hate more than when people say “it was just a joke” in defense. Yeah and we’re not laughing. Some things should not be made into jokes. Her reaction is wild. This player’s wife was nothing but respectful when she explained how it makes herself and her husband uncomfortable on a daily basis. Especially bc it wasn’t just online, but crossed into his real life- his literal work environment, where he’s required to be- when she went to the hockey game. Content like that about real athletes, celebrities, etc is a bit much. They’re not fictional characters. She can say things like that all she wants about fictional men, bc there’s nobody harmed by that, but there is a line between fiction and reality that needs to be respected.

God the stretching video made me really uncomfortable. Whenever I’d do sports in highschool or even going to the gym now im worried people will be looking at me, luckily I haven’t caught anybody yet but it’s still a fear. I couldn’t imagine stretching while someone’s filming and yelling sexual remarks at me. There isn’t anything inherently sexual about making sure your muscles don’t get torn up and these people need to reflect on how uncomfortable they’re being.
@musiclife-eb5yv Жыл бұрын
Also there’s like a huge difference between saying that you find a celebrity hot or attractive compared to saying all those things. I understand as women we have been sexually oppressed and (maybe) we don’t know how to behave and we mimic men in their harassment behaviour (once again maybe) but just because you’re a woman does not mean you can’t not make a man sexually uncomfortable. You still have that power. And this is just another reason why male victims keep silent because they’re not treated with the seriousness that’s it needed. I’m glad it’s being talk and discussed because we need to talk about the new fan behaviours in the internet and where the line stands

it's so wild that you brought wood chopping guy in here because the clear divide is men who have actively created accounts consenting to these encounters with their audiences (even he has set boundaries.) the team can be at fault for hyping the fanfare up, but they can also be commended for wiping it away when one of their players has advised they feel uncomfortable. we should applaud them for it actually it shows they care enough about players bodily autonomy to remove them. i just don't understand what is so hard for people to realise consent can be revoked at any time and you are not entitled to other people's bodies??? no matter how famous they are? there's gotta be a ven diagram of women who exclusively read romance/erotica, and women who dont understand consent here. also as a side note it is truly hilarious as a hockey fan to see her claiming she made this team relevant.
