Jessye Norman’s performance with Kurt Mazur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra brings me to tears every time I listen to it. We will never hear her like again.

Sublime. I won't compare her to anyone, but give her her due in her own right. Bravissima.

Exquisite. The artistic restraint, the understatement, the razor-sharp control on approaching ascending and descending notes, especially at the extremes of the vocal range, is a marvel. Just wonderful: pure beauty. IMAO. Thank you for sharing this.

I have the Mazur recording as well. It was the first Jessye Norman vinyl recording of her's that I had ever purchased, must be sometime in the 80's. When I first played side one it not only made the hairs on my neck stand up but brought tears to my eyes, as it still does to this day. She has a unique voice, so powerful yet so delicate and fluid.

An extraordinary performance! Miss Norman's voice in this video does not have the sheer power it had in earlier performances of the same piece, but it has taken on a more fragile element of pathos and tragedy that is deeply moving. This is due perhaps to the personal challenges she was facing in her life at that time. I enjoyed this tremendously. Thanks for posting.

Am I the only one to whom seems that the very first bars are actually a musical quote from Götterdämmerung? From act I, scene III, when evening falls. But maybe just a coincidence.

@avarmadillo, what?! Jessye's interpretation of Strauss' four last songs are by far one of the BEST available. For you to make such a comment should certainly be sign that you're going deaf. Have a doctor check on you, please.

Difficult to believe that Strauss wrote the 4 Last Songs in 1948. Those and DER ROSENKAVALIER (1909-10) are my favorite works by Strauss, and therefore, in my top ten musical works of all time. (I don't usually rank music that way, but I have such strong feelings about Strauss.) I still think Schwarzkopf is best in the Songs and ROSENKAVALIER.

I love Jessye and her voice is well suited to this, but it is too slow for me. I have an excellent recording (live) with Eva Marton that is fantastic. Of all the 4 Last Songs, September without a doubt is the one with the most "sparkle" and it loses some of that when it's too slow. ;)

Wonderful voice--but not fit for this music. This is really chamber music. She sings the "song" well, but not the meaning of the text--My take best interpretations: Renee Fleming on youtube and very best: Elisabeth Schwartzkopf with Szell and the Berlin Phil (her last recording of it)---NOT found here on youtube; absolutely astounding coloristic and shape mastery of the voice for expressive purposes. Learn the German too--it's critical to really appreciate Schwartzkofp. Sell your bed and buy it.
