This is the third of Mahler's five Ruckert songs, recorded at Avery Fisher Hall with Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic. Performed at the opening of the 1989-90 season.

I am not a professional singer or musician, but I consider Jessye's voice as one of most versatile and beautiful vocal instruments of our time.

This is so intense! I am learning two of these songs and I am in awe of these interpretations! Her poise, her expressions! I am learning so much!

Em - grande in the verbal sense, too ;-). Only joking - she does a great job, without any doubt.

4:51: Love it. Obe d'amore. Should be a glissando-effect.Seems to be a normal oboe, though.

The primary reason Mahler wrote the part for Oboe d'Amore was because it could hit a low concert A, which is below the oboe's range. In this recording, the piece has been transposed up 3 half steps for Norman's vocal range, making the use of a d'Amore unnecessary.

Love this piece! My college wind orchestra performed it many years ago. Our English horn player played the oboe d'amore part and it sounded pretty good.

I am not usually a fan of Miss Norman, preferring these songs sung in a lower register voice (Baker and Ferrier) but have to confess when she reached Herr uber Tod and Leben there were tears in my eyes. RIP

Norman has much darker voice than Baker...

Yes, we know. English doesn't have an equivalent, unless you want 'Rueckert,' and not all browsers support the special characters required to produce the umlaut.

Fantastic performance from Jessye. Shame about the oboist.

she's an exquisite performer and can sing almost anything, her voice is not at her best in this repertoire, though. It's trying to sift a hurricane through a keyhole
