Because if the former, I don't think Jester, proud daughter of a high end prostitute, would care that Caleb got confused while blind drunk. If the later, Caleb was canonically in love with Jester and starting to fall for Essik at the same time. And he was in a relationship with Astrid and Eadwulf at the same time. Polyamory is a thing.
