The Romans didn't want to execute him, it was the Jewish High Priests in Jerusalem that wanted him crucified because he was a threat to their authority. Pontius Pilate tried everything to free Jesus but they demanded he be crucified. In the end it doesn't even matter because Jesus foresaw his crucifixion and willingly sacrificed himself to atone our sins. He even got mad at Peter once because Peter did not want him to die when Jesus revealed his plan but Jesus knew it had to happen.
