Forrest Valkai often says that if there were definitive proof of the God of the Old Testament, he'd be a theist, but he'd want nothing to do with it. I disagree; I'd want YHWH on a wanted poster. I'd want him arrested and prosecuted for his crimes against humanity. No sentient being that interacts with a society is above the laws of that society, including the creator of that society. I'd also want diabolos arrested and prosecuted; he and YHWH can share a cell and get really cozy for all eternity. (I wonder who his advocate would be?) And I wouldn't stop there; pretty much every God that Man has ever believed in should be on notice: If you exist, we will find you, and you will be held accountable. I think the gospel of thomas is actually classified as a gnostic text maybe? Gnostics believe that jesus didn't represent yahweh at all, that yhwh is a false god who mistakenly thinks he is the all powerful creator, but that jesus represents the 'real' real god, they claim this is why NT Gods qualities are in stark contrast to OT Gods. This would also help explain why it didn't make it into canon. The gospel of Judas is another good example of a gnostic text

Expanding on the tolerence paradox. Tolerance is a social contract. If one breaks that contract with violence and threats, it is the responsibility of those holding to the contract to reduce the harm from those breaking the contract in the most tolerant manner available. Akin to a toddler throwing a scream kicking fit in the middle of a crowded place. If its not harming anyone, let the tike get the big (to them at least) emotions out. Not adding energy to an already over done system can be a quick way to balance and reason. In some situations, scooping up the miserable tike and hauling them bodily out of the situation is the best option for them to blow their top and safely regain equilibrium. Takes a little more finesse when dealing with big people but the principal still stands. As functioning adults, its our responsibility to limit others from unconsentually harming themselves, others, or their environment to the best of our ability. Yes its a big ask.

When I started watching this video I had no idea you were going to force me to listen to Ken Hamm, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and Jordan Peterson all in the same video. This was genuinely unkind, and will require therapy. Ken Hamm is a criminal, a grifter, and a scoundrel. Politically, he is advocating for one nation under Trump. He likely sees this as a path to forcing his religious views on the rest of America. He and his whole channel fail to see the flaw in this, both ethically and morally. And history has shown religious control in government always leads to civil unrest and oppression. Christians, as well as all other religious persuasions, are free in America to profess their beliefs and teach them at home or in church to anyone who wishes to hear that teaching. There is no compelling reason to teach them in schools to those who do not wish to hear them. Christians, as well as all other faiths and those without faith, should be free from having to listen to the preaching of religions they don't want to learn. The only reason they are seeking to force other people's children to learn about their religion, is to gain power over others by using the threat of the supernatural over them. Religion is always about power.

People who invoke the Paradox of Tolerance seem to forget to mention this part: “In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise.” This is where I disagree with those who think their opinion gives license to suppress the opinions of others, as it’s just an obvious and thinly veiled authoritarian excuse to suppress others. There are only two ways to get someone to change their mind: persuade them, or force them and it seems like you’ve given up on persuasion and just want to force them.

@@NeptunesLagoonthere’s actually a really interesting idea that the legendary story is actually much older than that. There’s geologic evidence than the Black Sea was much much lower in water level before it connected to the Mediterranean, something like 8-20k years ago. So there would have been towns and cities swallowed up by the flood waters when that happened, and the water levels rose like a hundred feet in a matter of days, moving the coastline literally tens of miles inland. It’s easy to see tat the few survivors telling stories would talk about a “global” flood, when even this kind of massive cataclysm would have been a few hundred square miles. And the evidence is definitely not conclusive, there’s debates on how big the difference in water level was, and how rapid the flooding would have been. Also, no archeological evidence, which could indicate there were no civilizations, or could indicate that it was entirely things which were destroyed by time. Which is a bit unlikely, as stone tools and bricks and cut stone survive being under water quite well.

The ontological argument was proposed by a Muslim theologist to prove Allah, and was quickly ripped to shreds by other Muslim theologists. When it was later copied by some medieval Christian theologists, other theologists equally demonstrated its pathetic weakness. Since then, it resurfaces constantly among naive apologists, but has always remained a laughing stock among philosophers.

@@patrickday4206 The two creators of Superman, writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, were both Jewish, so it's unlikely they were taking Jesus as a model :-). They developed the character via two earlier, unsuccessful versions in which a man was given 'superpowers' by an unscrupulous scientist. If there was any religious connection, it was probably the Jewish concept of the golem, particularly as portrayed in the legend of the 16th-century Golem of Prague, created by a Rabbi to defend his fellow Jews from persecution.

I think it is particularly twisted and overtly manipulative when an atheist says that there should be more religious people. Like saying that they don't fall for that stuff or they don't need that stuff. But it would be useful if more people would. I understand that religious people may feel validated... But really it is kind of patronizing. Like Voltaire saying that he doesn't believe in God but he hopes his servant does.

Saying no vote no right to complain is the first absurd thing i’ve heard on this channel. Such statements do not take in to consideration the reasons some have for not voting. Not voting can be even an active act of protest as opposed to blindly voting for whomever (especially the “lesser of evil”).
@thaddeusgenhelm89792 ай бұрын
I mean, in the American system, not voting is not a meaningful act of protest. Somewhere around a third of Americans, plus or minus a bit on average, don't already due to a myriad factors. A protest that is impossible to perceive in the already existing statistics does not have any weight. And advocating against harm reduction doesn't really seem to strengthen your position. I dunno, while it is a bit of a flippant, "stereotypical" sort of take, your substantiation on his lack of consideration feels... Less well considered. Like, I think I would've agreed with you more if you just said it's a trite thing to say, but with your reasoning laid out, I think that, while it is a trite thing to say, the position you seem to be advocating for is just less effectual.

Which words are god's words and which words are added? I don't think we will be able to find the answer in Genesis. CS Lewis made a bit of a slick move there-one that believers have always been glad to make. Because, to choose _any_ of those three, you have to accept BOTH that: 1) Jesus was a real person that existed in history (which i don’t exactly _accept_ , but i’m prepared to grant); AND 2) We have an accurate record of this person’s exploits and quotes. It’s only if you accept _both_ of those that you’re forced to choose from Lewis’ trichotomy. Even granting that this person existed, we don’t know what he did and said. And it’s those words and deeds that Lewis leverages to force us to choose: only a Liar, a Lunatic, or The Lord™️ would do and say the things that their Special Book claims he said and did. But if i’m prepared to accept that this ragtag bunch of dudes accurately passed down Jesus’ many deepity-ridden soliloquys and wanderings, well then i already believe what The Special Book says, and all of these gymnastics are utterly pointless. It boils down to: if you believe the Special Book, then accept that the things it says are true. And i’m like… that’s what it means to believe a thing! So i don’t accept that my choices are liar, lunatic, or LORD. I could say, as Paul here does, that there’s a fourth option: legend. Or i could just say: show me what the guy said and did-convincingly-and then maybe we’ll have something to talk about. Sorry… i got started basically agreeing with you, and then i just couldn’t stop! 😆
