My father died earlier this year. He had been sick for over a decade, and he was in a lot of pain near the end. He made it very clear to us that he wanted to take advantage of the Medically Assisted Dying program that is available in Ontario. Dad was going through the process of arranging his own exit, which involved several interviews with his doctors to verify that he was competent and able to provide full consent for the procedure, when he took a turn for the worse. He was placed in a palliative care center where they managed his pain and discomfort mostly by sedating him. That put us in a bit of a bind because the patient MUST be lucid and able to give consent right up to the moment of the injection, and he was sleeping pretty much constantly. I feared he would be stuck in a sort of limbo - not really living, but also not able to take that final journey we all knew that he wanted. Dad didn't last long after that, which was a relief in some ways. I'm glad that he passed on quickly and peacefully, but I'm sad that he died alone in his hospital room. If he had been able to take advantage of the MAD program then we could have arranged for him to be surrounded by family and friends when the moment arrived. I guess the point I want to make is that having the option to leave this life on your own terms is a good thing. Don't believe the scare mongering about mobs coming to murder your autistic child because they are a drain on society. That's definitely NOT how it works.

"Make thee an ark of gopher wood" (Gen. 6. 14). The ark (Teba, something "hollowed out." See Fuerst’s Heb. Lex., in voce) seems to have indicated a part of a circle, and was often represented by the crescent moon. It doubtless typified the winter portion of the year. The material - gopher wood, an evergreen, emblem of winter - out of which it was made, likewise favors this idea. As the year was made up of three seasons, so the ark' consisted of three stories - "lower, second and third." The one window was "above" = the canopy of heaven. The single door (entrance) was in its side = the fall equinox. The gopher wood, says Gesenius, was "pitchwood” (Lex., p. 201). This makes a nice blazing fire, affording both light and heat - the very thing for a savage people in winter. From its abundant heat, and the season in which it was used, this kind of fire doubtless came to be styled Hell- fire, i.e., winter fire; hell being the old high German for hole - the hole or cave in which the Sun seems to sojourn during the winter months
@imagomonkeiАй бұрын
@harveywabbit9541 “gopher wood, an evergreen” considering that GPᴴR is not the name of any known tree in the Bible, this is false. On Earth today, the number and types of seasons changes based on climate and latitude. Your post has a lot of baseless claims he didn't even try to substantiate.

@@reefhog "the obviously fictional story of the loaves and fishes". People travel into the interior of the Holy land to hear Jesus. It's probably a hot day. Most will bring some food with them. Some will not. Some baskets of food are passed around on the instructions of their teacher. As an individual sitting in the crowd, with your own food, what would you think these baskets with some food in were being passed around for? What do you think you were supposed to do with them? Now, go somewhere quiet and instead of resorting to some comic-book explanation given by atheists, think it through. You've just listened to a speaker who talks about giving, and those who have and those who have not. You know some people in the crowd are probably hungry. You have some food with you. A basket gets passed around. After it goes down the row it comes to you and there's some food in it. Assuming Jesus inspired you, what would you do? And then, if a lot of others did the same what would the baskets look like when they came back? The Bible is not for stupid people; it is for people who want to follow the truth, who believe in love and who are prepared to use their God-given powers of intimation and reason. You called it "fictional". You know better now. Ask why this obvious and wonderful knowledge was denied you, falsified and kept from you.

@@reefhog I summarised it well. Here it is below. Please explain how my summary is "nothing like" the text. Take your time and while you are doing so, consider why you have had a mischaracterised version of it in your head for so long when after all, it's a beautiful story about love. Could it be you rejected its meaning because its message about faith in love for your fellow man condemns you? Would that not be awful? And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals. But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude. And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.

_"Evidence for resurrection?"_ The original version of the oldest gospel of Mark did not originally include any appearances of Jesus after the women visited the tomb on Easter morning. Mark originally ended at verse 16:8, with no appearances of the risen Jesus - merely a statement that the young man told the women that Jesus' body was gone and they fled in terror, telling no one. The later Gospels made up the resurrection fiction and that was then also added to Mark from the Luke version 1,500 years later during the King James project to harmonize the Gospels.

They simply say, here is a story that conflicts with my religious opinions, therefore it is wrong. Also, the woman who at 6:12 describes the bible accounts as being "reliable, eye-witness historical accounts" and "so confirmed by so many documents and manuscripts" is either woefully informed (most likely) or is intentionally lying.

In the Odyssey, Telemachus feeds 4,500 by blessing the food and dividing the portions. Jesus feeds 5,000 in the Bible and does the same but miraculously. Honestly, it seems like early Christians were trying to convert Hellenistic Greeks and made up stories about how Jesus was like all the cool stuff they knew from the Odyssey, but even slightly better. The Odyssey also has themes found later in the Bible, like calming a storm, returning in disguise to meet one’s old followers, escaping a cave that was blocked closed by a rock, etc etc. Jesus’ calming of the storm in the Bible is almost copied word for word from the odyssey, if you look at the text side by side.

I just want to chime in against the disinformation about Islam: how much certain Muslims expect to have their religion represented in government CANNOT be neatly explained by the Shia/Sunni divide. While the Iranian government is completely under the control of its Shia Ayatollah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is largely in thrall to the Bayt al-Wahab, a Sunni sect. There are Muslims who believe in religious freedom and tolerance toward non-Muslims in every sect. I am not a Muslim myself, but I object to their mischaracterization and to their being painted unfairly with a broad brush, just as I do when this is done to Christians. Some Christians are like Ken Hamm, and some are like Dr. Francis Collins. While I have no respect for religion itself, I have great respect for religious people who are decent, intelligent, and who promote freedom. To state broadly that Sunni Muslims are more moderate and Shia Muslims believe in forcing people to conform to their beliefs is, at best, a gross exaggeration that unjustly maligns a large number of peaceful, tolerant Shia Muslims.

Think of it like this. If only the bible has the story of the census where people have to travel to the home of their ancestors, which is bloody ridiculous, it is easily dismissed. However, if we have other sources that say it happened, sources unrelated to the bible, it would lend it more credibility. From there on it's just some effort to assert their version of the story as 'the actually accurate one'. Unfortunately, the sources are the bible, the bible, the bible and the bible. As well as documents inspired by, and this may surprise you, the bible.
@RiiDiiАй бұрын
@@gerritvalkering1068 Yep. I see it as a lack of faith for those claiming to be faithful. Think of it like this example: "This sentence is true. This sentence proves the previous sentence is true." The second sentence isn't necessary and implies the first sentence cannot stand on its truth statement alone. Neither sentence offers evidence or justification beyond self-reference. This creates a "truth bubble" that's internally consistent but lacks grounding. While some events do line up historically, that's far from any demonstration of evidence. Demonstrating that there is an England doesn't prove that Harry Potter is a real person. If the Bible was a source of truth, external references would be meaningless.
