@Oscar Rimmer Sheik Yerbouti - actually 1979 - I was seven. But, at four the album Roxy & Elsewhere is why my folks hid them. So I did the math and I was seven when I found the Zappa albums in the shed out back...Sheik Yerbouti was one of them. FAV TRACK: 'BROKEN HEARTS ARE FOR ASSHOLES' My fav album. There's my lil story. Actually, when he died my mom took a Polaroid of me holding that album up, & made a note on the album...1979 technology.. 🥸

Gillan had an advantage, he was the first and he used this advantage in full - he created the perfect version. All subsequent performers are doomed to copy his finds and improvisations, because if something is removed, then they are not professional enough, and if they add something, they will be in excess. But what is one aria compared to the whole rock opera - he is gentle, then furious, then naive, then wise - an amazing singer.

@@982spyder5 When I first heard Jesus Christ Superstar, I was quite young. This rock opera was a cult in our country, but since I lived in the Soviet Union, hearing and seeing it was quite problematic, so I was excited. This was the 1973 movie version. It ended and nothing happened to me, I just didn’t like it and this continued until I heard the album of 1970, then the whole puzzle came together and today it is my favorite album. In fact, today I like high-quality live performances and enjoy visiting them if possible, but on the recordings I only listen to the 1970 version.

Actually in singing, passion is the enemy of high notes. The key is to look and sound passionate. But if you feel that passion the note will go SPLAT all over the place. Just look at everyone in Lindsay Ellis' video who has veins in their necks. If your neck is tense, there's NO way that note is coming out. But plenty have tried to force it. Nils Isberg hit the nail on the head, this is almost a whistle tone. No idea how he's making it. But it sure is amazing.

During the famous 'whyyyyyyy' high note of the song, Gillan's voice seems to surpass straightforward note reaching and actually becomes like a child's cry, in that way that when a baby or child is so emotional, their cries overwhelm them and their voice, even if it gives them a temporary sore throat, surpasses a healthy vocal expression. That's why I think Gillan's interpretation will always be the greatest, he seemed to stretch his voice to the great beyond and elicit the emotion of someone overwhelmed by the dread of what they are led to believe they must do. He also does an incredible job of the section with the lyrics 'Right, I'll die, just watch me die, see how I die' - he manages to balance anger, pride and pleading all in one as he consigns himself to his fate from God. You can hear his fear turn to anger and resoluteness, then pride and almost vengefulness as he tells god he'll face death, but that God better be prepared to watch his son die. A fantastic job of expressing Jesus's grappling of the human confines and trying to face with courage the ultimate sacrifice, of one's life for a cause.

The Magnificent interpretation of Ian Gillan's portrayal of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane was Extremely well-articulated. Thank you. In addition I think it's interesting to note that in the biblical account of Gethsemane, this Christ was in such a mental turmoil and an emotional self struggle pushing himself he collapsed to the ground actually causing droplets of blood in his sweat. This agonizing intensity and anguish continued to increase to the point where he fully collapsed prostrate immovable upon the dirt. This struggle was so intense God his father had to dispatcha Holy Angel to strengthen him to continue the process. The rest is history.

I am always astounded by Gillan's performance here. It's too bad a better version either doesn't exist or You Tube has no other recording-- when the song and his lips go awry, at the pinnacle of the song, it's just distracting. I just read today that Gillan was asked to play Jesus in the film version, but insisted if he joined the cast that his band receive a salary too, as they would have to stop touring. Ted Neely was chosen instead. I wonder what trajectory Ian Gillan's life would have taken if he had starred in the film?? Although Neely seemed born the play the role, and was magnificent!! Not for nothing did Neeley tour extensively in the lead role (even though Gillan was on record with his role in JCS earlier, before the film) . The power of Neely pales in comparison to Gillian though, but Neely is a good stage singer anyway
@TomSistermans4 жыл бұрын
@Dirk Diggler nah man, it's clear that this was written for someone with the power of Ian Gillian, Neely just doesn't have that, Neely did the stage version better than Gillian could've ever done because he's not an actor, but in terms of raw power of the voice, which is such a fundamental aspect of Gethsemane, Gillian stands head and shoulders above Neely
@TomSistermans4 жыл бұрын
@Dirk Diggler Dude, Ian was not in the film because he's not an actor. Trust me man, you don't want to do this divine argument, you first have to prove that God exists and then you have to prove that God wants this, the world doesn't work that way.
@TomSistermans4 жыл бұрын
@@pillowprincess3673 I was indeed born for this role. No but I get it, it's perfectly fine to prefer Neely honestly, Gillan was not an actor after all, it's only logical to want those visuals, that instrumental break around two thirds in hits so hard in the movie because it shows those paintings and it shows Neely being upset and stuff. I wouldn't argue his voice is nearly as powerful as Gillan, not against Neely, Gillan is just THAT powerful. I feel like it perfectly works for Gethsemane, it got me way more into JCS than the movie ever dit honestly

the voice of Jesus! what singing! JC left all alone in the garden of Gethsemane, his apostles addled to sleep by whatever they have consumed...JC facing an existential crisis why he has been chosen to die, to be nailed to the cross, for the sake of all mankind. Why I should die! The loneliness, the angst, the torment, and above all to come to terms, the acceptance of death...delivered with such passion by Ian Gillan whose vocal chords strain, stretched to the very limits to convey JC's existential angst

Came across this having just seen an excellent local production of JCS. Never heard Gillan singing this - but oh boy! Talk about understanding the assignment! Absolute perfection, just as he was at his peak with Deep Purple. I remember being blown away the first time I heard Child in Time. For him his falsetto is just part of his natural voice and he uses it to express emotion, not as a "look at what I can do" moment like so many do. Brilliant. Blows established Broadway performers out of the water.

It's a human story, the suffering of a man. There is no question of Jesus' humanity. The tragedy is all too human. The big question is divinity. Was he divine ? Personally I doubt it. Undoubtedly Jesus had his fans, but just because people say things like Eric Clapton is God, it doesn't mean that three days after his future death, Eric Clapton will appear to his bereft fans in a locked room.
