My church condemned JCST because of this performance. Jesus was supposed to surrender completely to his crucifixion. Jesus Christ Superstar unveiled all of the emotions that the historical Jesus must have felt. But we couldn't have a Jesus living a human life. He was a plastic Jesus. Well, bravo to Ted Neeley for this ageless performance. Regardless of your religious beliefs this performance should rock your world.

The most soul-crushing part of this song for me is Jesus’ revelation that it’s out of his control. There’s a huge emotional shift in the space between “What I started” and “What you started.” Everything after that is just pure emotional power.

But it wasn't out of his control. (Take me before I change my mind). He could have changed his mind and opted out. The Bible shows that he was afraid, not angry or confused. The fact is he was born for this. He and the Father came up with this plan of redemption, knowing that humans couldn't keep the Laws of God. However, a sacrifice was required as the cost of sin (not keeping the laws of God with 100% perfection). This is what the sacrificial lamb symbolized: the sacrifice of the only person who hadn't sinned (and therefore was the only one qualified to do it).

He had that look you very rarely find. The haunting, hunted kind. (I couldn't resist the reference.) He always struck me as the most both-God-and-human casting, which would be in line with my understanding of the Biblical Jesus. Not so human that he seems like a regular guy, and not so regular-guy that he seems human. Watching his performance always makes me think, "Wow, there's something unusual about him."

Ted figured into one of my most perfect days…I was 15 years old (so spring 1972)…skipped school with a friend, took the train into NYC, had my first drink in a bar (I was 15, but the bartender never even glanced at us as he poured the beers) and then caught a matinee of JCS at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. Ted was otherworldly as Jesus! I’m nearly 67 and remember it like it was yesterday! Glorious….

There is no shame in dropping your faith. Faith is believing in something that has no evidence. You are right to question. This is a lovely movie, and a nice fable. But to me, it is like a story about Apollo or some other god. Beautiful movie with moving music. Art evokes strong emotions. But I think "plummeting" faith also means "ascension" into the beauty of reality. Just my humble opinion. Have a great life.

I was lucky enough to see Ted Neeley perform this role live on stage circa 1996. It was at one of those outdoor venues where everyone was sitting on blankets on the lawn. The crowd was pretty lively, laughing and chatting. But everyone fell silent during Gethsemane, we were all so engrossed by his performance. It still gives me chills

I'm an Evolutionary Atheist and I'm beyond words chocking on my tears every time I watch this performance. I saw the original Jesus Christ Superstar at the movies when it 1st came out & all these years later Ted Neeley can still hold that high note so beautifully like he did years & years ago. Agreed. One of the greatest evils perpetrated by Christianity was to teach that humanity is worthless without the intercession of "God." God did not write or sing this: people created it. It is called "art," and humans have been creating it for thousands of years- and not because of divine intercession. I fact, I think the creative urge is a direct response to a universe where we are on our own, free and unhindered to do great things (or not), so that we will be remembered, or forgotten. What's more inspiring- to imagine some all-powerful being humming this tune for Andrew Lloyd Webber to copy, or ALW just sitting at a keyboard and dreaming it all up? I too am an atheist, and I have come to appreciate this music far more than I ever did when I was a "believer."

Attributing everything under divine intercession is actually a heresy, (God is not man's servant but he is the lord) then again Divine Inspiration to certain arts it might true spiritually for the artist but most Christian Traditions have a clear separation from Religious and Non-religious arts. Literalism is more newer than majority of the mainline Churches even the Mormons had traditions which dissuade literalism.

This is the most passionate and incredible performance I have ever seen in my life. I saw the movie at least 10 times in the theatre when it was released in 1973 (I had the biggest crush on Ted Neely!) and as I have grown in my faith in Jesus, this performance holds even more weight with me. I'd just turned 14 when this movie came to the movie theaters. I went with my best friend and her mother managed to make us miss the bus. I remember being freakishly adamant that we were not going to miss this movie and devised a plan for the to "run-walk" the many blocks to the movie theater (run one block, then walk one block, etc.). We somehow made it on time and I remember begin absolutely rapt through the entire movie. It had a huge effect on me that I easily remember to this day at the age of 63. (I got a big crush on Ted Neely too!).

Not only because of it being an example of 70s music and pop culture, but it’s impact on both rock and musical genre where it definitely influenced a lot of rock musicals. I’m still disappointed it hasn’t been inducted yet.

Back in 1972 we were stationed in Holland, but we teens had to go to Germany for our highschool grades 10-12. We lived in a co-ed dorm. Our highschool put on this opera, using the sound track record in the performances. We "Dormies" as they called us sang the complete opera riding back and forth from Germany to Holland and visa versa and in the dorm. I knew everyone word of every song in the opera. As a 14 year old, this opera was just a beautiful opera to sing. I always sang Mary's part. Sadly, I had strade from my faith, but this opera took me back to it. This particular song has and always will move me deeply, for I can only imagine what our Lord and Savior suffered through for each and everyone of us, to save us from our sins.

Religion, faith, or devotion doesn’t play a huge role in that never-ending question of why because we’re all human. And when something devastating happens to us or in the world, it’s only human to ask why. Sometimes we get an answer, but most of the time, we don’t and must carry on with our lives, needing that closure and never getting it. I have watched this movie since it came out in '72 and it was more emotional than you can imagine. In a documentary, the director said when making this scene for the movie, he wanted to tie a rope around Ted so when he climbed up these boulders, Ted would be safe. Ted said, no way, and started climbing as the speakers around him started blasting this song as he climbed and sang. I was lucky enough to see the play, which also starred Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson, and got backstage to meet Ted. The next day I met him and Carl Anderson backstage in their dressing rooms and Ted gave me a personal tour of the stage and props, along with stories from the time he was in Israel making the movie. It was an experience I will never forget. He can sing that song today as well as he did back then. Thank you Ted, and RIP dear Carl Anderson.
