Arguably one of the greatest rock operas of all time would be Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar (I was actually in a band with Jeff Fenholt who played Jesus in the original Broadway version).
And two of the biggest stand out songs were Gethsemane (I Only Want to Say) and Heaven On Their Minds.
So at Gabriela's prompting, we decided to take them both on!
First up to bat is Heaven On Their Minds.
What makes these kinds of songs so challenging is not just simply the melody or the range, but actually living out this song while singing it!
And yes, there are some very difficult intervallic notes placed throughout the song, but it's the stepping into the character of this song and selling it hard that is the most difficult part.

Wow, the lower registers required by that song really showcase Gabbi's smokey, sultry side. She is quickly becoming my favorite female singer as she has it all. Obviously Ken is a great coach and mentor, anyone who believes otherwise must be blind and deaf. When you have students like Gabbi learning and mastering their craft with such gusto (and success), the proof really is there in the singing. I could listen to this performance over and over and I probably will! LOVE GABRIELA!

Fantastic vocals. It kept getting better and better. She nailed the high part at ‘every word you say today’. I got chills from ‘followers are blind’ - great passion and contrast between the amazing singing and the accusation. The multiple camera cuts at the beginning were too much for me tbh and I feel detracted from the vocals rather than enhanced them, but the vocal performance itself was outstanding and I loved it by the end.
