Nick, I just wrote in the comments. You have to do the Garden of Gethsemane from the original album. The original has Ian Gillan from Deep Purple playing Jesus role. And as I said in the comments. Anderson & Neeley do a fine job, I have the movie & I've seen them together doing it live a couple of times. But they are not Murray Head & Ian Gillan. The think Gethsemane is one of Ian's best performances. I don't have the money to sponsor marathons or request or I would. But check Ian"s version out. It would be great to see you react to it, but if not, check it out on your own. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Nick, the original recording (1970) features Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) playing Jesus. It represents maybe the best vocal performance of his carreer. You should listen to it. The version you played is from the film soundtrack (1973), wich features Ted Neeley playing Jesus. Good, no doubt about it, but the original piece with Ian Gillan, especially the track "Gethsemane", is THE thing.

And every time I listen to it, I can't keep my feet from tapping. Thanks for playing the songs. BTW--did you know that Ted Neeley (who played Jesus) can still do a fantastic job of singing Gethsamane. He can hit those high notes with crystal clarity accuracy even though he's nearly 80!

Jesus Christ Superstar was originally recorded as concept album in London. That's the version I grew upwith and listened to so many times that every note and inflection is burned into my brain. I think it's the superior recording because it has a harder rock edge than the movie version and it has Ian Gillan, lead singer of Deep Purple singing the part of Jesus. Murray Head as Judas (who really has the best parts) really rips, too. The album led to the stage performance and there is a London cast album. There is also a Broadway cast album . JCS was the first show I ever saw on Broadway. Then it was made into movie, which I thought had pretty stale staging. So lots of versions. The original concept album is the only version was meant to listened to rather than accompany staging, so I think the pacing and timing is better suited to listening.

I really love that Jose requested this. When the original concept album came out it was really a sensation, as The Who's rock opera Tommy had been. I had been raised in a suburban Detroit Methodist church, going to Sunday school, singing in church choirs and participating in youth groups. They were really more social or musical experiences for me. JCS really made me think about Jesus' story, as I listened to the album and read the lyrics, which were so much more accessible than The Bible. I think that those of us who first heard this original album, before there was a Broadway play or a movie, probably prefer it. It was made to be listened to, either on a stereo or on headphones, and the mix is just right for that. If you do decide to react to the whole thing, I would recommend it for that reason. I also think that it is natural to like whatever version you heard (or saw) first. My husband played bass in the pit band for a few musicals in the late '90s for University of Michigan MUSKET, and two of them were Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar- but JCS was his favorite! Thank you for your honest reaction to this, Nick, and, FYI, I don't mind your "rants." 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

Yes, it is THE rock opera, like no other. Nick, love that you are listening to this wonderful score. Of course everyone has their personal favorite versions, usually depending on the vocalists singing as Jesus or Judas, but listening to any version is a Good Thing. It's just fantastic music. If you like what you're hearing, go back sometime and listen to the original concept recording from 1970. I personally never related to the 1973 movie version, but I know that some people love it! There is a filmed stage version done in 2001 though that I think is just incredible.

Hi Nick, I have seen this movie so many times, and have it on dvd as well as the movie soundtrack. It is excellent, and in the movie we have three of the original cast > Judas / Mary / & Pilate [ pronounced Pie Latt ] [ & Gethsemane = Geth sem man ee ] The lead Jesus played by Ted Neeley, is very well cast, and you no doubt know by now, Ian Gillan was in the original play, and on the original record, which I first heard aged just 14 yrs old .. at school .. in class. In Belfast in Ireland we had RE classes [ Religious Education ] being a Catholic school, and one day the teacher walked in with a portable record player and the double vinyl album of this. It was amazing as he played the entire album. I had heard Ian Gillan for the very first time, before hearing Deep Purple. It's still my favourite version, but this is also very good indeed. I must admit I do watch the movie more than play the movie soundtrack. I prefer to play the original, which has since been remastered on cd and boy what a difference in sound clarity !! This is an excellent marathon. Nick the play was called "Jesus Christ Superstar A Rock Opera" . The movie begins with the cast getting off a bus, and changing their clothes during the Overture....Note at the end ..they get back on the bus ... but who's missing ? [ Not really a spoiler alert, but a poignant moment easily overlooked ] The guitar riff during the 39 lashes is the same as this 1st track with Judas. .. Nick, I do not do Twitter and agree 100% on what you said....and you have probably seen a few times, I have also responded to people who have trolled you.... and occasionally on a comment I've made. They don't bother me either. Great reaction to a Rock Opera, thankyou. Byee Jim X

I was confirmed in the church in 1976, and I remember my pastor telling our confirmation class not to watch or listen to this musical because it wasn't an accurate telling of the Passion story. He told us to listen to "Godspell" instead. I think both musicals are great, but I think "Superstar" may outlive "Godspell." The latter musical feels more dated to me. And anyone who could be unmoved by "Gethsemane" has a heart of stone! BTW, there is a 2018 production of "Superstar" with John Legend in the role of Jesus and Ben Daniels as Pontius Pilate. It was recorded live. Very well done!

Sorry, although the live version with Legend is tolerable, but the definitive version is the 2012 Live Arena Tour that ALW participated in. That was the way Webber really wanted it performed. I've seen several versions live, and on video, and the 2012 version is the one I'm most impressed with.

This was one if not the first album I had/given. One of my brothers had gone all Born Again & he was horrified. When Life of Brian was released he practically had seizures. He didn’t get British humor or the irony of it. I saw JCS performed live & it was incredible. It is Rock. You need to listen to the Gethsemane version by Ian Gillian from Deep Purple. He sang Jesus on the original album. They wanted him for the movie but he put Deep Purple first. Also I barely made it through The Passion of Christ. Horrid. Mel is an extremism’s Catholic. Very cool! Well done, Jose, and a great reaction, Nick. I get what you're saying about the topic being a sensitive emotional topic, but I think it was very worthwhile. Interestingly, at the time when this came out in the early 70's originally, there were a lot of protests by religious types who I think didn't get the concept underlying this, and they assumed it was disrespectful. The original Jesus was sung by Ian Gillan from Deep Purple, which was especially cool. Very astute comment and observations by you about social media, etc.! You're a wise man.

I think I've seen about six different stage productions of this. I'm not at all religious - the opposite in fact - but there's something in this show that speaks to me. Did anyone else here see the London Barbican production a couple of years ago? I was in the front row and couldn't hear properly for an hour. But it was so good I went back a few weeks later. The film is okay but nothing compares to having live people belt out these songs right in front of you. That big note in 'Gethsemane' gets everyone going, brings shivers and tears to the sternest old atheist. The whipping is intense. So difficult to pick out just five songs - I think I would have lost 'Trial' to make room for the sublime 'Damned For All Time'.

Nick, do not worry about the nay-sayers below -- you did a great reaction, which is why we continue to support you two. Please remember that I sent you a DVD back in October last year (I remember seeing you unbox it) of the 2012 Live Arena Tour concert, that had Andrew Lloyd Webber's participation. Now would a great time to watch it (you and Lex) as it is almost Easter, so it is topical. In my opinion it's the definitive performance, slightly better than the original concept album from 1970. JCS is written from the POV of Judas, so obviously it might be a bit negative, and there were a lot of people at the time that complained it wasn't an accurate representation. That's not the point -- it was great music, and it got people discussing the topic back then, which was good. I severely overplayed the LP when we got it. I always thought that maybe, just maybe, if I ever wanted to perform on stage, I'd do Caiaphas, as I'm a bass, and can hit those notes. However, I did finally get a chance to be lighting designer on a performance while in college (getting my MS) -- I understand I may have gotten some sort of award for it, but the kids never got it to me, no matter, I had a blast. Anyway, please watch the video. -- Great Scott

Webber & Rice originally came up with the melody for "I Don't Know How to Love Him" when they were trying to write a pop song that could be a hit in the US. They thought including an American place name would help, so the original lyric started with the line, "I love a Kansas morning .... "

I've been listening to this from almost as early as when it was a concept album--and I was only four years old. I was a small-town, Southern (US), churchgoing boy. This left a mark on my theology. I never thought of this as an attempt to tell "The Story." It's more of a "What if we think about it like this?" approach. This gives us insight into possible relatable human motivations, especially Judas's, Mary Magdalene's, and Pilate's. Really, the title of this notwithstanding, it's very much about Judas to me. It's very thought-provoking. I recommend listening to the entire original concept album.

I like the original album much better than the soundtrack version which came out in 1973, after which it became a musical (I saw it with my wife in Prague in 1998 and it was INCREDIBLE!). JUDAS is sung by MURRAY HEAD (who does, in my opinion, a much better job on "Too much heaven on their minds" than the version you just reacted to) and JESUS is sung by IAN GILLIAN of DEEP PURPLE, who was on tour and therefore couldn't do the movie. Many of the other singers are the same, but I STRONGLY RECOMMEND that your future reactions to JCS be to the original 1970 album, and NOT the soundtrack version. Thanks again for your great reactions!

You need to see the movie. It’s fabulous. Ted Neely, Jesus, who did it on Broadway and in the movie version was still performing it in the 2000s. He was unparalleled when he performed it not only for his voice but the emotions he made you feel. I saw him in the 90s.

FYI, this is not the original with Ian Gillian. I grew up during the time this originally came out. My wife absolutely loved the movie and she listens to the soundtrack regularly. I told her to get the original with Ian, who she loves. We have both on CD and we were able to see the live production with many of the movie players back in the early 2000's. Good stuff.

Nick, first video I've seen of yours, and I greatly enjoyed it. I have been obsessed with JCSS since the original album was released in 1970. I was ten years old, and all of my siblings, and I used to play and sing along all the time. I've seen the live version with Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson a few times, as well as other casts. I am stilled moved Everytime I listen, especially when Jesus is in the Garden before his arrest. I definitely don't consider myself religious, but I can't imagine that there is anyone who isn't moved by that. Thank you, it's fascinating to see first reactions!

If you are going to do the entire thing make sure you listen to the ORIGINAL album version, with Ian Gillan, Murray Head, Yvonne Ellerman etc. It is much rockier and the vocals are outstanding. This version is quite good and works quite well as a soundtrack to accompany the movie, but it pales in comparison to the original as a listening experience.

I recommend making the effort to see the whole production. The Mary Magdalene pieces are truly beautiful. The production is great. It was made as a secular story about what is believed to be a very religious event. However if you can move past the religious myths it is a very clever script accompanied by lovely music. If Lex is available I would suggest you watch it with her too. Thank you for your reaction, you dealt with a very sensitive subject well.

Thank you for this video I’d like to share my story if I could. I’m 24 living in willoughby Ohio. I grew up baptized Episcopalian an altar boy in that church and the Catholic Church, went to a Methodist preschool run by sisters, and was confirmed episcopal. I rejected my faith slowly seeing all of the things my parents had chosen to lie to me about and watching my mom slowly die of cancer from ages 7-10. I drifted into atheism/agnosticism until I was 24. Using drugs and anything I could get my hands on to distance myself from god. I started suffering epileptic fits at 22. 3 weeks ago at work after working myself to exhaustion at 67 hours a week I had an epileptic fit at work. The medicine I was taking was draining the sodium in my body causing me to have more seizures. I neglected to mention that I had wisdom teeth taken out so eating was a challenge and I was essentially fasting and on a calorie deficit and lost 11% body mass over 5 days in the hospital. I was put on a fluid restriction as not to pee put the remaining sodium I had left and I was put I a new medicine. The side effects were less appetite and insomnia. Being a marajuana user for the better part of my life and not being able to smoke compounded with this and my anxiety. But for some reason I was calm for everyone else around me. It felt like I needed to be there. So I shriveled up there like a raisin hardly eating and drinking, not sleeping, weening of and on medicine. For 48 hours. Then I go home. At this point in my life I had been very familiar and comfortable with the effects of not just pharmaceuticals in general but auditory and visual hallucinations from lack of sleep due to my ADD and having taken adderall and vyvanse before. My record was 48 before. So I get home at 48 and I don’t sleep. I can’t. So I call my girlfriends and she tells me to pray and ask god and my mother to help me to sleep. I say yes but internally I scoff at her like yeah 58 hours in a bunch of good that’s gonna do I gotta go to the fucking hospital and get dosed or I’m gonna fucking die. So I go to my dad and it’s 4 a.m. and I ask for his sleeping pills and I take one. And I go to sleep. And a voice tells me. Pray. And I listen. I prayed for sleep and to talk to my mother who had been dead for 15 years. Something I had been asking for in vain for 15 years. And then god took me. A second was a thousand years and a thousand years was a second. He showed me a cell and said in perfect English “Look what I did” and it divided and kept dividing. Then he let me talk to my mother for what may have been 30 minutes or 8 hours but when I woke up I was on the couch and I cried for 5 hours. She told me that I have already gotten everything that I have asked for in life and she is right. I truly am one of the most blessed people to have lived I have so many loving people in my life. She told me I worry so much about the wrong things. Worry about the people you love. When you fear god you’re not scared of anything anymore. I absolutely love my life. I love you all and what you have done for me. Peace be with you.💛

I got to take my 19 year old son to the show. They were still doing the live stage show. The album came out in 1973. The year I graduated from high school. Nick, I watched Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ and sobbed all the way through! But I read an interesting article on crucifixion and how the Romans did it. According to the article, Mel Gibson’s crucifixion scene was much less gruesome than how the Romans liked to do it. They used whips that had bits of bone or stone that would catch the skin and pull it off. It was not unusual for the prisoner’s muscle and ribs to be showing. I wasn’t surprised by what I cried all the way through. I was surprised to learn that the real thing was much worse. How He loves us that He went through all that for us!

"I only want to say", is actually the Garden of Gethsemane, or "Agony in the Garden". It is written that Jesus' sweat turned to blood. Ted does a wonderful job. BUT, this part should be almost the crescendo of the story, I don't see it as done strong enough. As much as Jesus does not want to, he prays and decides to accept the will of His father. This is a huge change here. He is angry at God and has a kind of a breakdown. Then a long, long pause. Before he says, "THEN...I was inspired..." almost in a whisper. There is a key shift, written in a different key. I am no musician but I can play this on the piano and get more of this dramatic shift, don't know if anybody could sing it. Good analysis.

Nick, it's very cool your doing so songs from JC Superstar, especially Gethsemane (I only want to say) but you have to do the original album. Carl Anderson & Ted Neely do a fine job. I have the movie & I even seen them do it live together a couple of time. But the original album has Murray Head as Judas & Jesus is done by Ian Gillan from Deep Purple. And the Garden of Gethsemane is one of Ian's best vocal performance. Not quite his vocal on Child in Time but pretty amazing. I'm surprised Jose didn't have do the original. It would be great if you could do at least Gillian's version of Gethsemane. I'm going to watch your reaction to the movie version now. I just wanted to get this out there & I hope you enjoy it & you check out Ian's version. Also Superstar, by Murray Head was a huge hit, same with I don't know how to love him done by Yvonne Elliman who's on both the original album & movie.

An amazing album. Some of the best rock rifts ever. The reason Superstar is going still so strong today is there is no ‘dead wood’ in the whole score. It just builds and builds. You got to hear the whole album and also check out the original album with Ian Gillain as Jesus. That and this film soundtrack are both amazing, I know it currently on tour in America and selling out like it did over here in the UK. Carl Anderson as Judas here, what a voice as with Ted Needly as Jesus. The religous aspect have never botherd me at all. I think with JCS you take from it what you want, (or don’t want). It was considered blashpemy by the chruch on it’s first release in the early 1970’s and remember there was protests outside the theatre in london. The Church and indeed the pope went onto to embrace it. For me I really feel the humanity of it like when Judas and Jesus aregue in the Garden of Gethsemane, really feel the emotion. I Don’t Know How to Love Him is such a stunning song and when Judas reprises it that gets me every time. Oh alll the songs are dam good. Enjoyed your honest review. Watch the whole thing.

We had the soundtrack on vinyl when I was a kid (I was 8 when it came out and in an atheist family) and even though I haven’t listened to it in many years I know every word and note. Definately worth checking out the movie still moves me 50 years later-follows the last days of Jesus pretty closely and was very successful in getting young people at the time interested in Christianity-another album Godspell was released a year later and had a few good tunes as well but was a bit abstract in telling Jesus' story. Deciding to listen to the album or watch the movie is a no brainer-watching the movie is far more impactful. In terms of the different soundtrack versions-the original with the brown cover is by far the better version. It also had the hit versions of "I don't know how to love him by Yvonne elliman who played Mary Magdalene and Murray Head who played Judas-Superstar.

Was in the service in Germany when this hit. Took the world by storm. Listened to it for hours! Some of us were trying to find a way to put it on for an Easter Sunday presentation on the Kaserne using the soundtrack and costumed performers moving on a stage divided by lighting as scenes changed. Post Chaplain wasn't having it (afraid there would be too much controversy). Still have all the notes we made! While partial to the original cast the movie and soundtrack are fun. The John Legend production from a few years ago was very well done and I personally prefer it to the movie. Really needs to be a start to finish listen! Great memories!! Thanks!!! P.S.
