Neeley was good, yet, no one ever sang this with the perfection and emotion of Ian Gillan (lead singer of Deep Purple). Ian was handpicked by Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice and is on the 1970 LP of Jesus Christ Superstar. He brought a level of soulfulness and range unmatched. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXyvp5WHjMp-opo

Carl Anderson (RIP) as Judas is brilliant. "Heaven On Their Minds": is one of the best songs of all time, IMO. You really need to see the entire movie; life-changing to those who appreciate music. My Grandmother was the original "Church Lady" and watched it with us at the drive-in, and she LOVED the film.

I first saw the film of Jesus Christ Superstar when I was 25 . I am now 74, and beyond thrilled to have rediscovered the AMAZING TED NEELEY still killing it . He hasnt lost one iota of his extraordinary vocals nor his spirituality which, i believe has helped him stay fresh and able in his ongoing presentation of this character. He owns it ! Thank you Ted!❤️

I’ve talked to Ted literally for hours about the experience of shooting this film . He is an amazing person . A rocker who took the role in a film and was personally transformed by it. You should see him with fans after a show. I’ve never seen him leave one fan wanting for a signature or a photo or one of his famous Ted hugs where many melt and begin to weep. ‘Why are you crying ?” TED will say . I’ve seen it many times... there are many different answers. Ian Gillians performance on the original studio recording was amazing as well . Neely though took it and brought it blazing into our consciousness for the soundtrack & movie directed by Norman Jewison and filmed in Jerusalem in some amazing heat. If you watch it 1000 times you will see and feel and think more every viewing. I still listen to both double album versions often. Love you TED . 🙏🎸❤️🎧✌️

Carl Anderson as Judas Iscariot was GOSH DARN amazing in the 1973 film. The whole story changed a generation, by if nothing else, making them curious. I was born in 1972 and don't pretend to be a religious scholar, or a scholar of any other kind. The play just asks a lot of questions about what has been driving the Western world for 2000 years. I have no answers, but have loved these questions ever since I've heard of them. Hope you enjoy the ride of discovery as much as I have. God bless.

"And this guy comes out of nowhere at the end..." LOL! That's the face of the late, great Carl Anderson who played Judas. Just before he kisses Jesus on the cheek and Ted Neeley sings, "...must you betray me? With a k---i---s--s?" In many ways, the character of Judas is the real star of this musical. You should hear Carl sing too. What a soulful voice he had. I highly recommend watching the whole thing.

Ted Neely played this part on stage until into his 70's. He only just recently retired from the role. The guy you saw right there at the end was Judas and the next scene is him going up to Jesus and betraying him by kissing him on the cheek.

Everyone has the same first reaction! The first part of the song, its 100% a "meh." And then he throttles up those pipes and just HAMMERS your brain space with that middle! Probably the fastest 180 a person does on anything ever is how fast their opinion changes on this song from that moment!

Sounds like your favourite genre (like mine) is Good. Good music doesn't come in just one style, one type. Music is in the ears that hear, the heart, mind, and soul that feels. Music transcends race, creed, colour, language. Good Music is anything that reaches someone. Good is one of those relative things. It varies person by person, moment by moment. Listen without prejudice and feel. Great reaction as always. Re: This song. The Garden of Gethsemane is where Jesus Christ had a moment questioning his role. Asking God is this truly what you want from me. He knew if he stayed what would happen, that he could run away but he also knew what the price would be for that. It's where Jesus Christ accepted his role, his sacrifice.

Music is used to tell a story. Notice the highest note is on the word "Why?" He then hits high notes again on "Alright, I'll die!" In the last part, he goes up the scale on "Nail me to your cross" and again high notes on "Kill me". Remember, this whole aria is based on a short passage from the Gospels where Jesus asks if this cup can pass him but accepts to drink of the cup as thou will. I know that is a mashup but you get the idea.

I grew up watching this musical. I must have seen this movie at least a hundred times, probably more. It was probably my favorite as a young child because of the music. I am so excited to see you react to this. I haven't listened to this album in a good 20 years, but because of this, I am going to go dust off my old LP and get the turn table spinning so I can listen to the whole thing. Love it. I can't believe I remembered all the words. LOL. I don't remember the name of this lead actor, but I did remember what an amazing singer he was and every time he gets to that end, OMG, I cry my eyes out because he does it so well I can feel his pain and confusion. In my opinion this was masterfully done. Thank you so much for bringing back some of these memories. I may have to go find the movie and watch it too while I am digging out things from the past. This was originally a Broadway production turned into this movie and if I am not mistaken, it is the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the Broadway Production.

Oh, I grew up with this movie and Godspell on tv at Eastertime, and both movie soundtrack albums on constant play on the turntable. My sister and I were always arguing over who got to sing Judas and who was stuck with Jesus. I had asked for tickets to see JCS live in Chicago in 1976, and later in my 20s volunteered as an usher at the Chicago Theatre when Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, and Dennis DeYoung (from Styx) were on tour. Fantastic show!! There was a really neat tribute album that came out of alt-rock SXSW festival in the ‘90s, when a bunch of the artists realized that they were all big fans of the play. The two women who are the Indigo Girls played Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and the woman who plays Simon Zealot does a really cool, laid back version of that song.

They're both great in their own right Also, fun fact: this musical helped me pass my literature exam. I had to comment on a extract from a book (can't even remember what book it was now). The main theme you could pull out of it was that the protagonist was being compared to jesus. Luckily bc of this musical I knew enough about the story of jesus to get the top grade in my class!!

This song really makes you think if Jesus really thought this way but the first one who played the part was in the play first that was Ian Gillian from deep purple he was the first offered the role im the movie but declined it due to his commitment with his band deep purple then ted was offered it and started this train a rollin he sang this song at carl Andersons funeral but brought it back at his farewell show in 2006 with out rehearsing it and nailed it at 78 years old surprising both cast and audience members alike the true feelings in the song came out this was in New York gala celibrating his retirement from the show he still occasionally performs and still has his great vocals when he sings i met him at tgat show and he is one of the most down to earth actors who is very kind and enjoys talking to his fans we shook hands i thanked him for his entertainment with hus acting and singing he appreciated that with out asking he signed my ticket stub shook hands once again and parted ways like we were friends

Great reaction, and perception of the play/story. Jesus Christ Superstar was originally produced in the late 1960s as an album...it was the first 'rock opera', it was then turned into a Broadway play, and then a movie. About two years ago, it was presented 'live' as an Easter TV special with John Legend in the role of Jesus. In its time, it was a bit controversial for a number of reasons. The way the story 'humanized' Christ...presenting him as a man with doubts, fears, flaws, and emotions went against the tradition view of Him as 'near perfect'. It also presented the other characters (Mary Magdelene, Pontius Pilate, Caiphas, the Sanhedrin, Peter and the Apostles, even Simon Zealot in the same vein. The dialogue was given a 'contemporary slant, (i.e.: "...but You hold every card...") to make the story itself more approachable for the late 1960s audience. Some...actually many...loved it and the album sold millions of copies. Some...especially those of a more 'conservative and traditional' view of Christ objected to humanizing him, and making him appear doubtful in this scene in the Garden of Gethsemane. Quite a few (myself included) felt the movie was a disappointment. Also, some scenes didn't quite follow the Biblical timeline either. The scene you just viewed was supposed to have occurred in the evening, after darkness had fallen on the city of Jerusalem.

This play is phenomenal! You should hear Judas!! I've seen this play about 20x over the yrs since it's release, by professional groups & college students. I've also seen the remake with John Legend. Altho I enjoyed every performance, nobody comes close to Ted Neeley here, except for Ian Gillan. They're both incredible! I loved it so much, I had to buy the album way back when it was released. If you get the chance to watch this entire movie, do it. Btw: the low budget campiness of this was intentional. In the beginning, the troupe shows up in a school bus as hippies, & they set up the entire show while singing an intro that blows your socks off at the get go! There are very little props used. It's all about the scenery, music, & lyrics. Very stripped down. Loved that you did this! Thx!

The guy at the end was Judas he was about to kiss Jesus to give him to the Roman soldiers. I haven't seen this since the 70s and forgot how powerful it was I need to go and rewatch the whole movie, thank you Dama Syd for showing it, I usually only watch your Home Free reactions, I need to start watching more.

They show Judas and it segues right into the kiss. Jesus' next line is "Judas, must you betray me with a kiss?" which I can't help singing in my head even through the video is stopped. I have the DVD of this movie, the 2000 stage version, and the 2012 Arena Show and I adore each one of them even though each has a different feel to it due to the cast and venue differences. (My JCS marathons usually end with the original movie Godspell.)

The music for this play I’ve always loved. Very haunting too. I remember my parents listening to the album from the musical growing up. It was amazing. Thx 🙏 💕

Ian Gillen sang this song too, beautifully, but Ted Neely gave the best interpretation cause we feel the pain and the anger of Jesus so deeply. People cry each time.

You should do Rainbow ❤️ Deep Purple was my first Metal band and will remain a favorite! Richie Blackmore a epic guitar player and songwriter who I feel never has received the praise he deserves! He went on from Deep Purple to Rainbow! Listen to Mistreated! He makes his guitar talk to you! ❤️

It would be very interesting if you can listen the same singer, Ted Neeley, in the same aria in 2006. He was 30 in 1973 and 63 in 2006. And I prepare you to listen Steve Balsamo. His performance in 2004 was full of feelings.

The brilliance of this Rock Opera is that the lyrics either quote or perfectly paraphrase what was said and eventually written down in the Gospels.

Should definitely listen to both versions of the song “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” by Yvonne Ellerman and also Carl Anderson (RIP) from the same film . Amazing. 🤯🎥🙏🎸❤️🎧😇

Love your reaction. In my opinion you saw the best. The only one who goes head to head with Ted Neely is Ian Gillian (Lead vocalist of the band Deep Purple). He is a powerhouse and is the original voice interpreter for the Jesus Christ Superstar in the album of the musical.
