This song was a part of a rock opera known as "Jesus Christ Superstar" which I saw in Wildwood, NJ as a teenager about 50 years ago.

Recently, I watched it on TV, starting John Legend. It was magnificent! I also remember this from my youth... 1960's.

I have watched the original Ted Neely, Carl Anderson movies, but more importantly, I had listened to the original JC Superstar album hundreds of times since I bought it in my first year in college in 1978. I also saw the John Legend performance due to thr hullabaloo. I was not expecting him to do it jusrice and I was not wrong. Compare to Ted Neely, Neely was so much better. Much better singer. Much more emotional, beat with conflicting goals. Listen to Carl Anderson as Judas then listen to the Legend version. Anderson's anguish, betrayal, and anger at what he thought was a political messiah and his destiny to betray Jesus and be "damned for all time." None if the songs in the Legned performance came close to expressing the conflicts, lost apostles, the confusion, the terror of Neely at knowing he must die a gruesome, grisly death, his hesitation and doubts. Legend didn't come across with much and isn't all he is cracked up to be.
