Prof Stark is definitely an eye-opener. A good friend of mine recently recommended me to read The Triumph of Christianity, in which he explains more in detail many of the things mentioned in this interview. I have been greatly interested in religions, in general, and in Christianity and Catholicism more in particular basically since I was 17 or so, which means I have read and watched a thing or two about the matter, though of course I am no expert, mind you. After all these years, to read Prof Stark has been refreshing and thought-provoking, so I cannot recommend you his work enough. Thank you to Olive Tree Media for sharing this interview with us

6:22 Stark on early Christians "they were basically setting up a different model of society" based on compassion for the poor and outcast. How ironic that many contemporary Christians seem hell-bent on destroying that very model.

Based on individual and collective responsibility inside the respective communities with institutions on different levels,, basically on a case by case basis and by nature imperfectly not enforced by an all-mighty, easily corruptable, often times self-serving state 🤔

@@spassprediger Different situation. There was no democracy back then.

Wrong. Go look in your community at who is running the programs feeding the poor (both serving hot meals and giving away groceries), housing the homeless, running halfway houses for those transitioning out of jails/prisons, helping young moms/pregnant women with fianancial and material assistance, praying for and caring for the sick and dying, helping the handicapped and those with disabilities, and you’ll see it’s mostly Christians.

No. Evangelical and other Christians. Some are Democrats, but it’s not government-run leftists, it’s free market Christians THE VAST MAJORITY

Stark is very influential on my life and the development of my doctoral work. Research indicates that in cities like Philadelphia the acreage urban small church contributes about $200,000.00 annually to caring for people’s needs. When interviewed, the leaders rejected the identity of “social work” and demanded that their work be labeled as “spiritual ministries”.

Most telling thing is that this social scientist will not ever be on CNN. Doesn’t matter that he has the research to back up his statements. Sad

Is being on CNN supposed to be some kind of validation?
