I used the shurikens for collecting the heads for the unlocks. Also the are pretty cool since the are homing and you can collect back

The Shuriken are the easiest way, in my opinion, to collect heads. So, not completely useless, but... Meh.

Fish food can be used to distract the cockroach looking things that you encounter on occasion. If I remember correctly they stop to eat it. Still not entirely useful...
