Jet JDP-15B drill press review

Here is an overview of my 15'' Jet drill press.

Thanks for the review Tim! Good camera work, no background noise, clear voice. Easy to watch. I'm not sure if your description of the way the depth lock works is accurate. JetToolsUSA channel has a 40 second video you can search for here on YT titled: "Drill Press Depth Stop Adjustment" In a nutshell, 1) turning the inner ring all the way counter-clockwise locks the lowest depth of the quill movement. It can move higher, but not lower than the locked depth. 2) turning the inner ring all the way clockwise locks the highest depth of the quill movement. It can move lower, but not higher. 3) anywhere in the middle the inner ring lock is a guess and I don't know how you would use that or why. If you wanted a 1 inch repeatable DEPTH drilled you loosen the black knob, lower the quill until desired 1" depth, then turn the inner ring all the way counter-clockwise, then re-tighten the black knob. The movement of the quill should only move downward 1 inch from top now. Alternatively, you can set the depth of the quill so that it stays in a lower position (for example if you wanted to use it as a spindle sander) by loosening the black knob, lowering the quill to the desired depth, turning the inner ring all the way clockwise, then tightening the black knob. It will now stay at the locked depth but you can move the quill lower.

It’s been one of my better tool purchases over the last couple years. My favorite thing about it is it’s table, and overall size. It’s like having a full size drill press on a bench. I’ll be doing a video of it soon and show how I have it set up. Thanks for watching!

I was wondering why lots of people are saying that Jet presses are just a WEN press with different paint job, badges and a bigger price tag. now I can hear why. When Wen presses are turned off, you hear a loud clunk sound from the motor and I just heard it with your press.

Your ignorance of motors is confusing you. This is powered with a capacitor start motor. There is a centrifugal switch that is closed normally, it opens as the motor is up to speed, which takes less than a second. Then when turned off the motor slows and the switch closes again. You barely hear it when you switch it on because of the other noise but it's unmistakable when turned off. Your table saw, lathe, and bandsaw all do this. My three phase drive driven motors don't because they aren't capacitor start motors.

Having 1 arm, do you think this would be usable compared to a standard drill press? They claim it's a 1 handed speed adjustment, and adjusting speeds on a drill press is a bit of a nightmare on a drill press. I liked the VFD drill presses that adjust speed digitally, but they're so overpriced. (Bosch makes a great one, at a good price,but they're not made for the US market. And they run on a differentpower setup than what we use in the US. )

I think it's possible to change the belts with one arm but it would take lots of practice. I know if I had one arm, I would try to save up for a variable speed drill press. I like what Jet and Baileigh have to offer, but your right, crazy expensive.

@@timsworkshop85 thanks. Yeah, I'm thinking there's really not much of a workaround. I've tried just about every technique, and every guide, jig, and rig, but they're all heavily flawed. I might have to build one and use a corded drill in it. Then again, a sheet of plywood is about the same price as one of the VFD presses right now 🤣 🤣 🤣. Thanks again!
