That fight went 5 minutes longer than it should have. People can not take the amount of punishment to the face that both took. Not even professionals. After 4 or 5 solid hits to the eyes from bald fists, their eyes would become so swollen that they would not be able to see.

The way he tanks hits, I wonder if Agent Smith’s fighting style from the first Matrix movie was based on him. Much of the Neo Vs Smith choreography is similar to this as well. Edit: Just looked it up and it seems it was. The Wachowskis even purposely hired the fight choreographer from this film to work on The Matrix.

Being able to take a Hit as good as giving one. Karate and Boxing has similar ideology. Jet Kun Do is a Mix martial arts that includes both (as the film was a remake of Bruce Lee "Fist of Fury")

Spot on! I was watching this fight scene and I also thought the matrix fight scenes Neo vs Morpheus (training) and Neo vs Agent Smith in the Metro Station were inspired heavily by this fight scene

One of the longest but best fight scenes ever made. Jet li was one of the best if not the best. But Bruce is still number 1. Donnie yen is number 3.

In close quarters, anything is better than a sword. You also have added risk of being disarmed and the weapon turned on you. This is knives or dagger territory, guess the general missed that during his Samurai training or was just plain desperate.
