Originally, Jet was going to die in a much more tragic way and not leave anything up for interpretation, but Nickelodeon was like "Ok, we let you get away with the brainwashing, but we draw the line at on screen child murder" So they had to leave it ambiguous, even though it is very VERY clear he's not going to make it. It's also an amazing parallel. Jet became Zuko's foil in this arc. Zuko was finally able to let go of his anger, help Appa escape, and leave the Blue Spirit behind. Jet did not. He let his anger consume him and attacked Zuko, which got him captured and directly lead to his demise. Zuko gets to move on. Jet does not. In the end, both The Blue Spirit and Jet got washed away in Lake Laogai.
@saltyk98692 жыл бұрын
One of the things I enjoy about this season is that it really makes it clear that it's not just "Fire Nation bad and everyone else good". We've seen it a little before now, with Jet and even Fire Nation citizens. However, up till now, most of the bad people were affected by the war. This is the first time we've seen a villainous non Fire Nation person who you could argue would be a problem regardless of the war. I feel like Long Feng would have been the biggest villain of this era if not for the war. Also, the scene with Iroh and Zuko in this episode is a Top 10 best moments contender. We all need an Iroh in our lives.

Have this interesting tidbit from the Avatar wiki about Lake Laogai: "The term Laogai is an abbreviation for Laodong Gaizao, 勞動改造 (simplified 劳动改造), which means "reform through labor", and referred to the use of prison labor in the People's Republic of China. The Laogai were a series of camps where opponents of the Chinese Communist Party were sent to work as slave labor."

Best scene transition in the series in this episode. Zuko's scream at the end of Iroh's plea to Zuko is synced perfectly up with Jet's attack scream showing that the two are the same at that point. Jet being literally brainwashed by the Dai Li and Zuko being brainwashed by his father about his destiny of capturing the Avatar and about the Fire Nation being the "good guys" in this war.

That "he's lying" Toph only says loud enough for Sokka to hear is so powerful. Such a brilliant way to dance around talking about death.

Also, something that is kinda funny to me is that, in the papers Aang is throwing around town it explicitly states the gang's address, so Zuko has no reason to act as confused as he does cause he could just go to that address and fuck the team up lol
@CrownofMischief2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but he knows from experience they can mess him up if he's on his own. He can barely beat a single member of the gang, much less all 4. If he takes Appa, he can hypothetically lure him out. Still a bad idea, but hey, we've already established he doesn't think things through to the end

Toph being able to tell if someone is lying is so cool and so smart. Because it really is true, theres a feeling of guilt, no matter how buried, when you lie, and you get a little thrill from lying, which does increase heartrate and breathing. And of COURSE the girl who sees via vibrations can sense that. Like, its such a cool and smart thing to add.

My top betrayal to a friend was when I was rewatching while it was her first watch. When Jet reappeared, it turns out she was really liking his direction. So when we’re at the start of this episode she asks me “hey, does anything happen to Jet?” I tell her “no.” But the cherry on top was her saying “Oh good, I can let him be my favorite character.” 20:32 Imagine for a moment you are her and I lean over and say “Hey. You have previously noted the north korean style tourist minder comparison to Joo Dee. I will point out in addition to this Laogai is short for a chinese phrase that translates to "reform through labor" which is what they would call re-education camps in communist china where prisoners especially in the 60s were brainwashed. They even did it to the last emperor of China.

Jet is one of the more tragic characters in the series. He was born in the Earth Kingdom, raised in the Earth Kingdom, and loved the Earth Kingdom. He hated the Fire nation for killing both his parents and burning down his home village. He was so angry at them that he founded the Freedom Fighters to combat the Fire nation in his own way. Although he was misguided in his anger towards them, his mind was clear. He did what he could for this mission only to be kidnapped, brainwashed and then killed by a high official of his own nation that he loved and fought for. I didn't like Jet as a kid when I first watched the show but as an adult, I have grown to respect his character, his story and how his story ended.

9:20 An important thing to remember about lie detection is that it only tells you if a person believes the things they are saying, not if they are actually true. It can be easily defeated by a person who has mastered the art of lying to their self. I've changed. I'm a better person now. I would never do that. I do not recall that.

Sokka jumping to the conclusion that Jet has been brainwashed is a bit of head tilter for me. Sokka is highly intelligent, but even so, that feels like a huge deductive leap, considering this is the first time we've ever had brainwashing mentioned in this show. Still, it's just a minor quibble for an otherwise great episode. Also, if a government agency is called 'the protectors of our cultural heritage' or some other vague name, there's a good chance that they're up to some shady actions.
