I made a replica of hiccups journal as a kid. used charcoal and thick brown paper and stitched it together myself. Had some of the dragon manual pages too, but also sketches you see in hiccups journal, custom ones based on stuff that happens in the movie and show, and I learned the simplified runic alphabet they use in the movie to make accurate notes. Still took me more another ten years to figure out Im autistic lol

Also Hiccup was a prodigy GENIUS he built a turret that was able to wound and incapacitate a Night Fury, something no Viking in history has ever done. Not to mention artistry is on point as well as crafting in general. People in his village were just a bunch of oonga boongas that didnt see his potential until after a crazy event.

Stoick didn't view Hiccup as an embarrassment, or a liability. He didn't want him to get hurt. He didn't want his son to go amongst the dragons because he didn't think he could take care of himself. And initially he was right. Under any other circumstances, Hiccup would get himself killed. Stoick was an extremely overprotective father whose biggest fear was his only son, and the only living member of his family getting hurt, or worse. His look after he leaves the house after their fight, is one of immediate regret. But he has to put that aside because the wellbeing of the entire village is on his shoulders. And when he realizes his son was right, he admits it. Stoick is honestly one of the best father characters.

Hew really is a good Father. He makes mistakes and doesn't really listen, but in that culture, your Father, not to mention the Chief, was a figure of authority. He is used to making the decision and having them followed. Kids talking back like Hiccup did wouldn't have been tolerated that much if he wasn't the son of the chief. But one thing I really like about him is that you, always, know where you stand with him. He doesn't mince words or hold back on how he feels and thinks.

This movie is the definition of the word "masterpiece". Everything about it works perfectly. The conflict between Hiccup and Stoick is handled very well, the bonding between Hiccup and Toothless is perfectly paced, I love how much Toothless acts like a cat, and how all the dragons act like real animals, and the musical score and flying scenes are absolutely beautiful. Fun fact, Toothless from the book is actually more to that of the Terrible Terror. But here in the movie, they decided to change his design to a more feline appearance with the help of the same artist who designed Stitch the alien. 1. This entire trilogy is *chef's kiss* right up there with Kung Fu Panda 2. Kinda miffed she skipped over Stoic literally staggering backwards after disowning Hiccup and closing the door. Like he literally couldn't believe he *just did that* and was lightheaded from the weight of it, ironically. Little animation details like that are everywhere in Dreamworks' movies and its great 3. The animated shows are also *mostly* solid. They do a decent job of expanding the lore by showing us stuff that happens in-between the movies: Other factions, tribes, as well as showing us different dragon types we never got to really see or focus on.

24:34 so in the film after this moment, Stoic actually stops and his expression changes. even without speaking, it just hit him he told his own son he disowned him, and he realizes he went too far. it's a nice detail to show how complex of a person he is. he's not the best parent verbally, but he does care for his kid. he understands his son might have a point about dragons, but he's also a leader of a tribe of vikings that all have this mentality of "its us or them" towards the dragons. even when things go south, he doesn't get cold feet. he understands he messed up, but it's too late to walk away, he knows he has to do what he can as the leader. and him saving Toothless and apologizing to Hiccup came well before the fight against the dragon. even before the fight, it's possible he did acknowledge this war didn't need to continue and they could stand side by side. so in the aftermath when it's Toothless, a dragon that saves Hiccup, a viking, Stoic's stance regarding the dragon war just completely does a 180 because...he doesn't have much that's keeping that drive going anymore (which they explain more of why he was more against them in the next film, but still.) he's a good man. not perfect. not entirely agreeable on with everything. but still a good man nonetheless.

One of my favorite parallels in this film is how both Hiccup and Stoic say “I did this” standing over Toothless. Hiccups need to be like the other Vikings caused him to hurt a living thinking creature that he saw himself in and immediately regretted it. Stoic saw how his pride and arrogance caused his son to take drastic steps to earn his approval which eventually leads to his “death” and immediately regretted it. Truly they are father and son and it’s great that they both were able to learn and grow from one another.

Astrid's character arc is so subtle. I have her pegged as someone raised a particular way and groomed to be the next generation of Viking dragon killers. This was her purpose all her life, it's what she was told, but she never actually learned if that's what she wants to do. When Astrid first strikes a dragon and does what she's supposed to do (funnily enough it's Stormily she hits). She looks visibly upset and confused. This isn't fun, it doesn't feel good, and she doesn't like it. That feeling is transplanted into rage when she yells at Hiccup. She needs to yell, she needs to fight, she needs to hit something because she can't sit and think about how angry she is at herself for being bad at this, for being bad at killing dragons, for being a bad Viking. Her paradigm shift occurs so suddenly because Hiccup shows her what he sees and she finally sees something beautiful, something she loves. All the doubt rage and hate disappear because she finally finds something that she loves, and someone who loves her.

You could argue Hiccup is the bravest from his village because he decided to free the dragon without knowing whether the Night Fury (the absolute "worst" dragon, according to the vikings and their book) would retaliate. Because to me the scene with the book about dragons and every dragon classified as "extremely dangerous, kill on site" tells me the vikings are extremely (pun intended) scared of the dragons and mask it with anger and violence because that's how a viking is supposed act. Hiccup decided to go against that because he realized that dragons are just as intelligent/smart as humans, not just risking his physical wellbeing but also risking his place within the village, the one thing we were shown from the beginning he really wanted, making his dad proud and "earning" his place in the village as a "true" viking. Deciding for himself (not because others told him he was supposed to) that he would rather be attacked by the dragon he captured/injured than live with the knowledge he unalived a sentient being is very brave and imo there probably wouldn't have been another viking who could have done the same.

I saw this movie at like 10 years old and it shaped me as a person : the empathy of Hiccup is so refreshing to see and his link with Toothless is so real and beautifully done ! I love how you analysed the scenes and didn't hate Stoick (I must admit I resented him for a while of this movie before), he isn't perfect but he admits it and works on it, which is another very important lesson to teach children AND adults. Also having two protagonists with a handicap and still managing to save the day and just live ? It's beautiful. I have an invisible handicap but it still resonated so much to have representation well done : Hiccup and Toothless are hurt, they have a long way to go but they aren't alone and they can help each other. My all time favourite scene is their first fly, it feels panicky because it's the first time for them and they gotta learn to really work together, it's also free and just wonderful because this build their trust and confidence. Also fun fact, for lots of Toothless' movements, they took videos of the director's cat making those movements !

Part of what makes these films so interesting to me is how immensely different they are from the books. There are some similarities here and there, and most names are the same, but for the most part, they are an adaptation in name only. And they are phenomenal, at least the first 2 (I haven't actually watched the third). But the most interesting part is how much sillier, but less kid-friendly the books are. They are completely different, and behind the silly names, goofy insult-strewn shouting and kinda childish jokes, they are shockingly dark and bloody, full of more adult humour, and often downright grim. I may be biased, due to having obsessively listened to the David Tennant audiobooks when I was younger, but I think that with some adjustment, and some tonal consistency, the books could be adapted into something really good, probably a series, rather than a film franchise (there's a LOT of books, and they can get a touch episodic). In order to keep the charm, and not have it be super edgy, it would want to be animated, but more along the lines of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, or Arcane, with a more textured, stylised look. And the result, IMO, would be something that stands completely apart from the outstanding film trilogy.

The thing I love most about this movie, is that they basically combined all the best aspects of both cats and dogs that make them great pets, and put them into giant flying fire breathing reptiles that you can ride. And that's honestly all ya need.

8:21 i get that mentality, its like how you know better than to let your dog eat chocolate or grapes, your dog may really want it, but you know better, but its also a mistake to treat your child like a dog, even if you only have the best intentions, those parents need to realize that their child will not be capable of maturing if they make their decisions for them, its up to a parent to teach their child how to make good decisions on their own, thats not to say that they should be absent in the childs life, but rather to teach them how to function on their own, for when they *ARE* all on their own, you cant learn how to swim if you are never allowed near water.

I loved this movie trilogy so much!! It is in my top 3 favorite movies❤ That moment when Hiccup and Toothless go for their first test flight and they are barreling towards the rocks. So hiccup just stops trying to overthink and goes with his gut and trusts himself and toothless...still gives me goosebumps to this day. Also i remember hearing that Hiccups name was given to him because he was a runt when he was born, a hiccup.

Please Alicia don't whatch how to train your dragon 2. Like half of all how to train your dragon content comes before the 2nd movie chronologically. They all help to expand the world and watching how to train your dragon 2 without seeing the short films and animated series will have you be a bit confused at the time the 2nd movie happens due to the big time skip with no big recap of what happened in between 1 and 2. Like new dragons or how hiccup and his dad's relationship developed in the time skip (please trust that it's best to see that development before the second movie or it will feel awkward to see after wards). Considering How Hiccup got his name, Its a LOT less Humiliating in the eyes of anyone who isn't a moody teen. He got it because he was born premature, which is a miracle to survive, considering the death rates for that time period. When you were born, You weren't like most children. Most Come into this world Screaming, as if to defy life and its cruelties. the louder the screams the stronger the lungs, and the stronger the child, usually. But you didn't scream. You were too Early, Too Tiny, and too quiet. We feared the worst, that you were stolen from us before you had a chance to fight back. And then, as if to defy Death itself, You Hiccupped. You were alive. That Hiccup Gave us Hope. You may not have been the strongest, and you probably never will be. But you were strong enough. Our Death Defying Hiccup. And since They often had names based on either their feats, or to scare malevolent spirits away, that makes naming somone after a sound that scared off Death itself quite a brilliant name.

This is the reason why Stoick doesn't listen to him, because he lies, get in the way while they are trying to defend themselves ( they were in the village, it's not like if they were in a dragon hunt, it was defense) and their homes, and doesn't want to take anything seriously as he's joking after creating a mess. Stoick isn't the perfect father, but his idea to have Hiccup learning another activity which was more himself, like being a blacksmith, a field where he could be creative instead of destructive. He never tried to push Hiccup to do something to be like the other kids, it's Hiccup who bothered him to be able to join the classes, and when he finally accepts, Hiccup refuses to go... I totally understand Stoick's reactions after that, Hiccup isn't a 3 years old anymore.

The music in this film is so damn good, there's a video of a composer going over how they jump from Hiccups theme to Toothless theme when they try to learn how to fly together and how both themes crescendo together when he throws away the cheat sheet and they fly through the rocks and obstacles. It's soo damn good

After Stoik told Hiccup " you're not my son " he actually stops and has a realization of ehat he had just told to his only child and family member and actually looks regretful. He just knew he fouldnt take it back at the moment so he marched on. This trilogy is the best.

Yup the first HTTYD is one of my favorites. The emotions you get from the first successful flight, the night against Nidhogg and finally the realization that hiccup lost his legs was so touching.

The music in this film is really well done. Toothless and Hiccup's themes are made to compliment each other. In the first flight scene, their themes sort of fight back and forth until Hiccup abandons the cheat sheet and the two of them fully trust each other.
