Airline: JetBlue
Plane: A321LR
Flight: 007
Seat: 29F
***Filmed in early November, 2021.
There's already a bunch of videos out there about flying Business Class with JetBlue from New York to London, but what about Economy? In this video I hope to answer that question with a review of my experience flying with this New York City startup on their newest route across the pond! Unlike most airlines, JetBlue operates this service with a narrow body A321LR, which is a more efficient and cost effective option instead of the traditional 777 etc. But will this increased efficiency come at the cost of passenger comfort? Watch to find out!
I'll be uploading the unedited takeoff and landing footage from this flight to my second channel: NYC Flyer Plus.

I can see why flying a narrow body might feel claustrophobic after a 10 hrs in one but they don't fly that long.
@RoadCone411
@RoadCone411 2 жыл бұрын
@@mmtot Honestly if the seat is the same or better, I don’t think it matters much. The seat room/comfort, food and IFE are what defines a good flight versus a bad one and all things being equal it doesn’t matter too much if the plane has one aisle or two except perhaps in the issue of the lavatory situation, as shown on the video. On my narrowbody TATL flight, I didn’t need to use the lav but waiting in the aisle for one to open up isn’t ideal.
@marcd6897
@marcd6897 2 жыл бұрын
I think the narrow body airplanes, and here the A321XLR in particular, have a max flight altitude of 10800 meters, while the wide body planes can (and do) usually fly at 11900 meters, and when flying over the Atlantic those additional 1100 meters can convert a bumpy ride into a more comfortable ride when hitting the jet stream.
@RoadCone411
@RoadCone411 2 жыл бұрын
@@marcd6897 I’ve never heard of that but it’s possible. Not sure how different the extra couple of thousand feet are in terms of ride comfort though- my JetBlue flight was glass smooth. It was probably just a good day to travel. I’ve been on plenty of widebody aircraft across the pond and hit turbulence. It’s not much fun (for me) no matter what plane type it is.

As an American expat living overseas, I can say why I favor a wide body on international flights: international flights typically provide a higher level of catering services when compared to domestic flights. That’s much more food, snacks, and multiple drink services. And as you pointed out, that means too many people, and not enough lavatories. As a premium cabin customer, I find that many main cabin passengers come forward because of blocked aisles, long lines at the rear lavatories, etc. My airline of choice when flying back to the USA is American. We lost our 767-300ER on this route, but now have the 787-8 Dreamliner.

Great review ! As a passenger I wouldn’t mind flying a narrow body aircraft overseas, but as a flight attendant I’m a bit concerned… I assume they rest on the last row of economy class ? For a 6hrs flight it can be tolerable but when the XLR will be operated on 8/9hrs flights it will be a challenge. I used to work on the A320 and the space is already challenging on a short haul flight so I can’t imagine on a long haul with a full meal service. But as we know aircraft manufacturers don’t really care about flight attendants.
@nycflyertravel
@nycflyertravel 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Yes, the last row was reserved for the flight attendants. I felt bad for for them because it really seemed difficult to operate with only a single aisle. They were really doing their best, but you could tell that meal time was definitely a stress.

I never leave comments on these trip report videos, but I must say as a strict BA only flyer on transatlantic flights (mainly due to my mum working with them for two decades and only travelling with BA since I was young and it becoming my favourite airline and experience) I must say this JetBlue service absolutely knocks BA services out of the park, especially for an economy service. I can't believe how intuitive the IFE was, it looks a lot more faster to respond to touch and more interactive and the ordering your meals through the IFE is a brilliant idea! Also the amount of selection food you have to choose from, not to mention how delicious those options were! And that ice-cream sandwich for dessert as well omg! Never would see that on BA. Personally for me, all of those options including dessert and breakfast are better than BA Business Class on occasions. I'm not really into all the fancy stuff BA serves sometimes. I can't believe you even get a snack Bar in Jetblue and it's in economy! I believe BA only every had a snack Bar on the 747 and it was just for Business Class passengers. I last travelled in 2020 on a 777 in Business and dont recall ever seeing one, had to keep asking the crew. One of biggest surprises has to be the free WiFi... on a long haul as well?! I must try JetBlue one day for sure

I flew the now defunct British Airways Club World London City. It was a narrow body A318 with just 32 business class seats on board. London City is a small regional airline in London s docklands with a short runway so the A318 couldn’t upload enough fuel to get to JFK so it had a refuelling stop in Shannon, Ireland where US CBP was completed so you arrived as a domestic passenger. Sadly covid saw this service permanently suspended but it was great.

@@nycflyertravel I think that very much depends on the success of the London routes. They have a big (potential) advantage because their product seems much better than the competition. Only problems are that JetBlue is not very well known in Europe and that they are nor Part of any Alliance. But with some good advertising and the right choice of destinations (mainly un-/underserved secondary markets with potential like OSL, BHX, HAM, BER, LYS or MRS) this may work out. This is just what Continental did sucessfully with their 757s during the 2000s, expand into underserved secondary markets. United managed to ruin most of these routes, most of them are history now ...

In 1983 I flew from Bogota, Colombia, to El Arish International airfield, at Sinai Peninsula , aboard in a mighty DC 8 Super Sixty, 21 hours trip with 3 refueling stops. It was my very first long range flight, and 6 months later, coming back to Bogota, same rute, aboard another DC 8 similar to a first flight as well. Was realy cool and very safe. Thanks for video.

Fantastic Flight Report. Indeed in light looks weird to do a transatlantic flight on board a 321, buta as you mentioned doing NYC to LAX on an Airbus 320/21 or a Boeing 737 is same. And all the cabin layout and amenities makes flight very enjoyable. I like ppl saying No, yerk, without seeing or experiencing such a flight. Hopefully your report will convince more ppl…👍✅

I have never flown transatlantic on a narrow body plane (the 707's and DC-8's were virtually gone for overseas flights by the time I took my first trip to Europe), and although I think it's great that there are more options for overseas flights from JFK and other east coast cities (I live in CA, and these jets don't have the range for flights from the west coast to the UK, of course), the thought of a 6-1/2 or 7 hr flight on a narrow body (in coach no less) is not appealing. 5 hrs coast-to-coast is about all I can manage, and even that long can be challenging on a full plane. A really good review, and this JetBlue service to LHR does sound very nice, but I think you were extremely fortunate that it was a partly empty flight (due to the pandemic). Had it been full, and with only 2 lavs in coach, it would have been FAR less pleasant. I know this new generation of smaller planes are much more economical for the airlines that fly them, but I would only do a flight like this transatlantic if I had absolutely no other choice for a wide body plane. To fly long haul overseas, give me a 767, 777, 787, 747, A330, A340, A350 or A380 anytime!

Thank you for sharing your flight. It looks like the food was good in Economy on their airline. At least this flight was not totally full as you said. I have flown to London on 777s and 767s when I have worked those flights.

Secondly, every time I have flown on my own vacations to London and Europe general it is on a wide body aircraft in Business with a few times in First Class. The only time I have flown on a single aircraft over the ocean from the US would out of LA to Hawaii in a 757-200. I flew First class on those flights. Yes, I am a wide body person flying those long hauls. I need the leg room so much for me being 6'2". And I am very comfortable with more bathrooms available on long haul. But again thank you for sharing your flight.

Finally, I have worked and flown on my own the transcon between New York and L.A. on the 757s. That for me is the narrow body aircraft I love flying on long haul trips besides 767s or 777s. I do miss the 747-400s from Chicago to San Francisco or L.A. But I know many airlines have stop flying the 747s due to the industry's economy. Again, thanks for sharing.

Very good video. Back in the day, Airlines operated B707s with no PE at all and everyone was fine. We even used to send a B757-223ER from JFK-MAN and it was all good. Its amazing how people want amenities but they aren't willing to pay, everyonewants royal treatments for free and everything costs money, everyone makes comments on how glamorous air travel was back in the day but they forget to add that flying was only for the rich and not for the common ordinary person, tickets were $10,000 minimum on F/C and you had to wear a suit, everyone complied and no one complained. In the 80s and 90s when we offered full tray service in main cabin to Europe or trans pacific flights, many used to complain about the "airplane food", the double standard today is outrageous. Today is about buying your ticket to guarantee your seat thats it and thats how it should be.
@nycflyertravel
@nycflyertravel 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I hear a lot of people lament about the downfall of Pan Am and how standards have declined, but they forget that flying across the Atlantic was very expensive. Now you can get a round trip ticket from NYC to London for about $400. Travel is now available to the masses and it’s a great thing!

@@nycflyertravel As I mentioned before, tickets were around $10,000 un first class. Tickets are cheap as you say but you also forgot that take off and landing fees and catering are extremely expensive and airline need to lower fares to compete, its to why PSM passenger seat mile don't make money anymore, CSM CARGO SEAT MILE does, its to why wide body aircraft cross from point A to point B carrying cargo just to pay for the segment alone. Low cost airlines get a credit but its not that much, they still need to pay for fuel, cabin crew members, pilots, jetbridges( jetbridge fees are extremely high) but no one mentions anything about it. Any way thanks for the beautiful video, keep flying and please keep recording and posting. Peace to you from MIA HUB

I recently flew from Jax to Lax on a narrow body. They are okay for 1-2 hour flights but anything longer not so much. If this is the new way to travel it want last long. I prefer big aircraft like 767's or larger. I kind of sad to see quad jets being retired. The best plane ride I ever had and nothing else has even come close was on a Lockheed L10-11. Felt like I was in a luxury car.

Narrow body aircraft have been used to cross the Atlantic for literally decades . So to say it won’t last long, doesn’t make any sense . If you think a two hour flight is the maximum time limits for narrow body aircraft . Good luck traveling by air …
