Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on KZbin, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on KZbin. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on KZbin, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.
This is a reaction video used to educate and give my feedback on the song and artists.

Why "AQUA"? Pneumonia was sometimes referred to as having "water on the lungs"... The homeless person in the story is suffering from this affliction. Apparently dying of pneumonia is very much like drowning. The actual word, "aqualung", is also what they called deep-sea diving suits... the ones with the big metallic helmet with the thick porthole to look through.

Right after you asked about the name "Aqualung", the lyrics say "And you snatch your rattling last breaths With deep-sea diver sounds". Ian writes wonderful stories. Try the song "Heavy Horses".

"Feeling alone The army's up the road Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea" Brilliant lyrics! The Salvation Army, a Faith-based relief organisation, will serve you pie a-la-mode (with ice cream on top) and a cup of tea... if only you will sit still long enough for the obligatory Christian sermon. The premise seems to be that they will try to save your soul as they comfort your body for a short time. You will still likely die from exposure when you get back out there, but you will die as one of their flock... and that makes a whole lotta difference to them, apparently. 🙄

Tull fandom is all about this song . The lyric explains the mysterious name of the guy . The death of Aqualung is forseen , and the sound of his gasping is compared to the sound of the divers tank .

"As you snatch your rattling last breaths with deep sea diver sounds." I think he likened a death rattle to the sound of a scuba regulator, a man struggling to breathe. Funny, I believe his wife wrote the lyrics to this song. What a bit of whimsy! I understand that Ian himself posed for the cover art. He saw a razor thin margin of misfortune separating himself from the homeless.

Many have already told you about the reason for the title Aqualung. A curious fact is that the term had already been registered by the French explorer, researcher and marine biologist Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who invented an autonomous diving equipment registered with this name, so JETHRO TULL could not use it. However, Cousteau generously gave his consent.

Man... if they didn't give consent, we might be jamming to "Scuba Tank" instead :p

The homeless man portrayed by this song had severe lung problems that took his life in the spring which made a sound like scuba equipment might make when he breathed. Sea hunt was a popular TV show at the time this song was being written and Aqualung was a popular brand of scuba equipment then.

@@36karpatoruski - I remember it mostly because of the '72 Jethro Tull Thick as a Brick concert. In the middle of the song TAAB the music suddenly stopped and a single spot shined on a telephone sitting on the Grand Piano which began to ring. Ian did a double take at the phone then walked over and answered it. He came back to center stage and announced 'telephone call for Mr Mike Nelson' and then the band picked up where they left off. A few moments later a guy in full scuba gear including the flippers flopped across the back of the stage, answered the phone and flopped back offstage. I remember the Sea Hunt reference being hilarious at the time.

@@antarcticorb9197 ‘58-61. I thought the comment was just linking the song to the much earlier show due to the breathing gear, a connection I made myself in 1971 as I have no diving experience and never heard the word for 10 years. Of course there is no relevance at all. I doubt Ian Anderson, sitting as a kid in England, knew anything about Lloyd Bridges undersea adventures.

My favorite group is Pink Floyd and you've done a lot with them and I've enjoyed them!! Jethro Tull is in my top five along with The who and other groups including "Yes" which is definitely a group you have to check out if you're into Pink Floyd! They're slightly different than Pink Floyd but they're from the same galaxy and it's not the Milky Way!! They're very similar to Floyd in so far as they have long compositions such as "Close to the Edge" also "And you And I" which I really think you would love!! However for a shorter song and to get an idea do their song "Roundabout" additionally, Pink Floyd has their distinctive voice with David Gilmour and his guitar, Yes has an absolute distinct sound and voice with Jon Anderson's singing and Rick Wakeman's keyboard! I really think you'll fall in love with them!!!

This song deals with our reaction to the homeless population. Jethro Tull vocalist and flute player Ian Anderson wrote the song and called it "a guilt-ridden song of confusion about how you deal with beggars, the homeless." Elaborating in the 40th anniversary reissue of the album, he said, "It's about our reaction, of guilt, distaste, awkwardness and confusion, all these things that we feel when we're confronted with the reality of the homeless. You see someone who's clearly in desperate need of some help, whether it's a few coins or the contents of your wallet, and you blank them out. The more you live in that business-driven, commercially-driven lifestyle, you can just cease to see them. In this song, Aqualung is a homeless man with poor hygiene. Ian Anderson wrote it about a character he made up based on actual photographs of transient men. Ian's wife at the time, Jennie, was an amateur photographer and had brought the pictures for Ian to look at. Many of the lyrics are Ian describing the men in the pictures. Jennie also wrote a few lyrics to go with the pictures, which earned her a songwriting credit, so she receives half the royalties from the song. She and Anderson divorced in 1974.

Aqualung, because of the lyric in the title tract "and you snatch your rattling last breaths with deep-sea diver sounds." If you've ever heard the sound of compressed air moving from a SCUBA tank through the regulator (or like a hospital ventilator), then you get the reference. Love your channel, by the way. I was in college when this album dropped ~1971

Ian actually dislikes this album cover painting, it is something his manager/label had produced and Ian apparently can't stand it. Amazing album, though, they innovated a lot of sounds, they were having to overcome the dry nature of the space the studio was in. Sonically it is not the best production, but overall the album kicks a ton of ass despite that. Impressive variety, moods, narrative perspectives, tight playing all around, and Ian sounds great. A hallmark album from a band on the rise. Really enjoyed your reaction, thank you.
