Nick, I think your bandmate might have misunderstood the lyrics to Aqualung. The harsh lyrics are meant to represent society's views on the homeless, not Ian Anderson's. They're contrasted with the more compassionate lyrics, which do reflect Anderson's views. Although his then-wife actually wrote the words to the song.
@corawheeler93553 жыл бұрын
Yes .... They should look at the lyrics and see how the harsh "Sitting on a park bench" goes to the empathetic "You poor old sod, you see it's only me".

Pffffft, compared to "Cross-eyed Mary", Aqualung is incredibly tame. Society assuming an old, grimy, homeless man is a pervert versus an entire song telling us the misadventures of a literal child prostitute? No contest.
@tonypotts16442 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed. A point that's seems necessary to impress more and more these days when people can't seem to differentiate between an artists 'commentary' on a subject, and the condoning of the subject.
@danwagner17022 жыл бұрын
I read an article some years ago that included an interview with Martin Barre about the recording of the song Aqualung. Tull had recorded the song except for the guitar solo which Martin Barre had come in to do the following morning. He had the engineer play the song back so he could run through it to "warm up". Unbeknownst to him Jimmy Page had come into the control room from an adjoining studio. Martin Barre said "ok, I'm ready to go." Jimmy Page said "no, that was great, leave it." So what we have been listening to for the last 50+ years is Martin Barre "warming up."
@Rickhorse13 жыл бұрын
Your friend Bob, like many people when first hearing the lyrics..don't understand the overall meaning of the song. It is about the way average people react when seeing a homeless guy sitting alone on a park bench. They immediately think he must be a pervert and a bad person....when in truth "it's only me" (if circumstances forced you to that situation). It is a very deep song.
@Rickhorse13 жыл бұрын
The lyrics, for anyone interested. Sitting on a park bench Eying little girls with bad intent Snots running down his nose Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes, hey, Aqualung Drying in the cold sun Watching as the frilly panties run, hey, Aqualung Feeling like a dead duck Spitting out pieces of his broken luck, oh, Aqualung Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely Taking time, the only way he knows Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog end He goes down to a bog and warms his feet Feeling alone, the army's up the road Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea Aqualung, my friend, don't you start away uneasy You poor old sod, you see it's only me Do you still remember December's foggy freeze When the ice that clings on to your beard It was screaming agony Hey and you snatch your rattling last breaths With deep-sea diver sounds And the flowers bloom like Madness in the spring Sun streaking cold, an old man wandering lonely Taking time, the only way he knows Leg hurting bad as he bends to pick a dog end He goes down to a bog and warms his feet Feeling alone, the army's up the road Salvation a la mode and a cup of tea Aqualung my friend don't you start away uneasy You poor old sod, you see it's only me Aqualung my friend don't you start away uneasy You poor old sod, you see it's only me Sitting on a park bench Eying up little girls with bad intent Snots running down his nose Greasy fingers smearing shabby clothes, hey Aqualung Drying in the cold sun Watching as the frilly panties run, hey Aqualung Feeling like a dead duck Spitting out pieces of his broken luck, hey Aqualung Oh Aqualung

Tull was absolutely one of the biggest bands in the world when the Aqualung tour rolled out! You guys are in for a real treat with this wonderful album, and I imagine you will carry it with you the rest of your days, as so many of us have! This is definitely a concept album, in my opinion, and Aqualung/Cross Eyed Mary are Central figures. I encourage you to dissect the lyrics as they are deep indeed! A little Brit slang is helpful....Dog Ends are discarded cigarette butts, “The Bog” refers to a public restroom in the park. You will pick out “Salvation” and “Army” and a cup of tea, which the Salvation Army offered to those in need. It’s a pretty heavy album! While I love pretty much all Tull, the Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick was my favorite period for sure! Have fun with this outstanding music, I know I have!

Wow, just watched your reaction to “In the Court of the Crimson King” and as soon as I finished you post this! You’re hitting 2 of my favourite bands in a row Michele is a true legend here on the channel, her picks are always fantastic! I can kind of understand how someone would be turned off by hearing particular lines in the lyrics but my overall interpretation of the message is a positive one. To me it’s a juxtaposition of society’s perception/stigma of homeless people versus what their actual story and situation is. You can hear the switch in perspective near the beginning of “Aqualung” where the acoustic guitar comes in with the effect on the vocals, then it switches back and forth with the musically heavy and lighter parts. “Thick as a Brick” (the full version) is ESSENTIAL listening, hopefully you can do that on Patreon one day. Thanks for the great video as always!

A bit of Trivia. When Jethro Tull was recording this Led Zeppelin was recording in the same building. While the guitar solo on Aqualung was being recorded, Jimmy Page happened to stop by and was standing there listening to Martin Barre play. Ian Anderson has said that having Jimmy Page there was both intimidating and inspiring.

I saw them back in 1976 at Madison Square Garden. I have been to hundreds of concerts and Tull was one of the absolute best concerts. The musicianship was amazing and I was glad they didn't just copy what was on the studio album, but instead had a different arrangement which I liked. A lot of people are disappointed if the concert doesn't sound like the album.
@benoitdesmarais29483 жыл бұрын
I agree, saw them three times in the 70's, BUT i have never listened to Bursting Out more than once. Comparing the versions of Songs From The Wood or Thick as a Brick with the studio versions makes no sense. What they brought in energy live on stage compensated for the simplification of the songs - Anderson can't sing, play the flute and the guitar all at once, Barre can't be adding guitar lines and duel with himself the way he does on TAAB, and so forth. What i really regret is there was no high quality video or film made of their 70's shows that would offer top notch quality image AND sound.

It is actually a very compassionate song. How society sees Agualung but how he really is and how he is struggling. I grew up with Tull. My best friend, Tull was all he played in his car, everything on 8 track. Every tour he has gone to and is going still in a few weeks with his 27 yr old daughter, who is also a huge fan. Back in those days I don't remember having the lyrics, so I didn't realize the real message of the song. A real masterpiece, just like My God and so many others.

I don't think yoga Bob ever listened to the lyrics to Aqualung because they are quite thoughtful and empathetic. It is really two different voices commenting on a homeless man. The first only sees him with disgust and suspicion. The second sees his pain and feels his hardship, recognizing he could easily be in the same situation ("you poor old sod, you see its only me...")

Aqualung and Cross-eyed Mary are both homeless persons. The songs reflect how they are seen by others as well as how they see and experience their own lives. Aqualung and Led Zepplin IV were the two albums which were the first to be recorded in the Basing Street Studios. LZ had the small downstair studio, while JT was recording upstair in the part of the studio which was the deconsecrated nave of a church. Martin Barre (Tull's guitarist) tells the story of them recording the Aqualung solo. Anderson would sometime steal a solo for his flute if the player didn't hit the solo right on an early take, so Barre really wanted to nail it. While he was recording, Jimmy Page came into the booth and was waving at Martin to get his attention, and Martin did NOT want to stop lest he lose the solo. The result was one of the great electric guitar solos of all time.

Thanks for giving the Great Jethro Tull another try, they are a perfect stew of Rock, Classical, Folk, New Age and a little Blues mixed in for good measure. Their first few albums are incredible and a change of direction for rock music. They are indeed one of the best bands of that amazing era and are so underrated. Try Thick as a Brick for a prog rock classic but for some more of their best rock songs try A New Day Yesterday, Nothing is Easy, Back to the Family, With You There to Help Me and To Cry You a Song, you will love these for sure! Tull were not as big as Zeppelin but they were as good in their own way. That they are not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is ridiculous! Rock On. 🎸

Anymore, not being in the RRHOF is a badge of honor. So many great bands of the 70’s and 80’s have been exiled from that elitist place. Supertramp , Kansas, Jethro Tull are the top three which come to mind. Hell, it even took The Moody Blues and Rush over 40 years to be inducted!!

@@chuckhutton5087 You ain't kidding, the list from the 70s is endless. It should have been the Popular Music Hall of Fame as many musical entities in there have NOTHING to do with Rock n Roll. Time for Up Our Sleeves live by Humble Pie. Rock On! 🎸

"as he bends to pick a dog end", he's referring to someone picking up a discarded cigarette butt... I've seen homeless people scavenging for discarded cigarettes on the street, always stop and offer them a cigarette out of the pack in my pocket...least I can do....?
@CaptWalker3 жыл бұрын
I don't smoke so would just give them the money for a pack, since my life is also at a point where i'm going nowhere, so least i can do is help someone else out.

I'm not sure what you're yoga practicing flute playing friend would have troubles with when it comes to Aqualung. It's a song about a homeless man being told from the dual perspectives of how people see him and his life vs. how he sees himself and his actual experiences. This song was famous for bringing the plight of the homeless to people's attention. This was a concept album. In fact, when they finished it and presented it to the record company executives, they were super pissed off. They didn't want a concept album. They took it to press anyway and it turned out to be Tull's most popular album.

A must watch! There is a video of Bruce Dickinson joining Ian Anderson in performance at a Church(I think). They do Maiden's Revelations!!

Ian's wife at the time, Jennie wrote some of the lyrics to the song, recieving half the royalties. She was an amateur photographer, presenting Ian with some photos which they described, inspiring the song.

Finally! Someone admits after all these years, that for a particular time, on a few tracks at least, nobody played harder than Jethro Tull!

When Led Zeppelin did their first North American tour, iirc, in 1970, Jethro Tull was the opening band. That’s when I first discovered them at the Earl Warren Fairgrounds in Santa Barbara. We had never heard of JT, but I’ve been a fan ever since. In fact they’re my favorite band from that period. They were a constantly evolving band, and recorded some of my favorite albums, that I still play to this day. “Songs From the Wood”, “Minstrel in the Gallery”, “Heavy Horses”, “Crest of the Knave”, “Broadsword and the Beast”. When the Thick as a Brick album came out I wore it out from playing it so much. Aqualung also got worn out.🤣 Ian Anderson is one of the greatest front men from that period. You really need to watch some of the live performances. I saw them live 7 or 8 times and they were some of the best concerts I went to. If you can find Thick as a Brick live at Madison Square Garden in 1978, I think it’s the best live performance of that song. It’s about fourteen minutes, a condensed version of the original which was about forty minutes.

Ian Anderson made it ok for guys to play the flute ! The inclusion of the flute in their music made them so unique sounding. "Skating away on the thin use if a new day" word be another classic song bt them for you guys to react to.

You see - her attention is drawn by Aqualung. In the first two songs, we hear Ian Anderson making a difficult social commentary on a disintegrated London.

Great that you're exploring more from this album. Please don't ignore the shorter songs between the longer tracks. Even though they are short, they are well thought-out and not just "filler". They are mostly acoustic but Ian is so great on acoustic guitar that you don't want to miss them. They have so many great albums but I would say go to 'Minstrel in the Gallery' next esp. The title track.
