This song is indeed about a homeless person... however the beginning of the song about him looking at little girls represents what people who see him think he is based on what he looks like... the other parts of the song say who he really is which is a "poor old sot" a homeless alcoholic who is dying of pneumonia... The lyrics actually say "spitting out pieces of his broken LUNG...he sounds like he is underwater because of the fluid buildup in his lungs...hence aqualung... BTW Cross Eyed Mary is the companion song to this from the perspective of the little girl he is supposedly looking at... and she is not who she seems either!!!!!!!

I was at the show. Madison square garden was a train right away from Long Island.. and yes, we were in awe of Ian Anderson. If you like dynamic changes, tempo changes, different time signatures, and him play the s*** out of the flute... Then thick as a brick should be your choice. The album was 45 minutes long , one song. There's a great live abbreviated version from the same concert in 78. The song has so many twists and turns you get to see Andersen and the band in their full Glory.

This, of course, was before they had the big 50-foot screens on stage broadcasting to the entire auditorium. The only visual the audience has is the band on the stage. Great performer that Ian Anderson is, he knew that you had to give a live audience not just something to listen to but something to watch--so he is, as the saying goes, playing to the back row!

So far you haven't seen what he was most known for doing. He has unusual methods of vocalizing through the flute, inspired by jazz multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and would play standing on one leg. Two examples of this are "My God" at the Isle of Wight in 1970, and (probably the best) the video of the flute solo at Tampa Stadium in 1976.

This is my first visit to your channel, attracted by "Jethro Tull" my favorite band of all time. I have seen them live at least a dozen times since 1973's "Passion Play" tour, including 2022 and 2023 with Ian having a different band different of course than 1970's. Almost every song except this one includes Ian Anderson's flute playing. I will look into Patreon. Meanwhile, as you are an opera singer, you might be interested in an unusual Jefferson Airplane song "Never Argue with a German If You're Tired or European Song." Grace Slick lead singer and beautiful voice for JA, also plays piano and recorder, and applies operatic voice harmonies from a Moog throughout. Jack Casady bassist and drummer Joey Covington supply those unique contributions. Never heard anything like it, as it is so catchy and almost unknown! My favorite song from their Bark album.

This was the golden era of indoor arena rock. Basically every major band went on tours after every new album release at all the big venues like Madison Square Garden, the Oakland Coliseum, Astrodome, Kingdome, etc. I was kid back then but managed to attend to a few. Actually, two, the Who and Bad Company. But all the classic rock bands did it, Tull, Zeppelin, the Stones, Kansas, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Foreigner, Boston, Floyd, Queen, the Eagles, Heart, Allman Brothers, Van Halen, Kiss, etc. Little did everyone know that it was soon going to end, with Punk, New Wave and alternative poised to take over, and outdoor venues like stadiums, speedways and public parks becoming more popular. What you're seeing was duplicated every night across the country and world at the time, in one form or another, regardless of the band or venue. It was a thing, along with the t-shirts and merch on sale inside and out and all the various substances people partook of. And instead of dancers and singers and wardrobe changes after every song accompanied by canned music, you got to hear actual, talented, virtuoso musicians playing real instruments live and raw, of songs they wrote themselves. Good or bad, it was real.

And yes, these were performances, not technology-aided and micro-staged attempts at perfectly reproducing the studio version of songs with everything choreographed to the nth degree. They were what punk rock was trying to be, raw, real and from the gut, only with actually talented and skilled musicians who knew how to harmonize and orchestrate and carry a tune, and understood chords and changes and all that, but still kept it real. For most people it was just what you did at the time, attend these concerts, buy the albums and listen to them at home on the best stereo system you could afford with your friends and substance of choice (and hopefully drive your parents insane, which was half the fun). Little did we know just how good so many of these musicians were, and that we'd never see their like again, for the most part. Many were classically trained or came from jazz and blues backgrounds and thus were disciplined and knew music theory, and even if not they had an instinctive virtuosity taken to the limit by actually trained producers and engineers.

Good choice Maggie , as allways love your honest reaction , thanks and congratulations. Jethro Tull is the name of an ancient Irish farming and cultivation tools. Ian Anderson, composer, singer, musician and artist. In addition to playing various instruments, he was self-taught in learning the flute. A genius who experimented with new techniques and sounds not very well regarded by the community of classical performers. Their concerts were a pure party, fun, theatrical, an explosion of music and total energy, and all with an Irish flavor. You as a singer will be able to appreciate Ian's physical wear and tear, almost a superman. Imagine more than two hours singing, playing the flute, running, dancing, jumping, singing and playing again and again and not passing out. And play the flute with his iconic pose, standing on one leg and one arm raised above his head. Great Ian Anderso INIMiTABLE. They were so sucssesfull in the seventies. Check live versions Cross eye Mary , Wind up , My God ,Songs from the Wood, Thick as a brick ... Keep on rocking beautiful Maggie❤ and greetings from Barcelona.

He sold it a few decades ago. In the late 90s his fish processing plant in Inverness caught fire and it cost a lot to get it back on its feet. Not long after he faced the possibility of closing down operations and making the people on his estate (he was Laird of Strathaird at the time) unemployed. He took his responsibility for the tenants and employees on his estate seriously so he decided to hire out the processing plants in Inverness to other companies who retained the existing workforce and sold his estate in Strathaird to someone who could continue operations and employment for his former tenants. In more recent years he also said that animal welfare concerns were also a factor. He came to understand more about how sentient and intelligent salmon are and no longer felt comfortable with modern salmon farming methods, so his conscience dictated that he should give it up.

Another live performance with better sound where the individual instruments can be heard. Locomotive Breath Live (1977) (9:13) on KZbin. Like the studio version it starts off with John Evan's classically inspired piano intro and runs, morphing into a bluesy vein as Martin Barre chimes in with bluesy guitar, and finally all instruments on the rock riff, Ian's dancing and singing with a flute solo in the middle. Since it's an encore the song morphs into the English anthem Land of Hope and Glory, then into a section with Ian playing organ, and finally the final refrain from another song Back-Door Angels. Each band member gets highlighted and you see their comedic stage performance. Another live one 1977 with a lot of jazzy flute is Thick As A Brick excerpts from their one-song album Thick As A Brick strung together (13:30). To keep it shorter, check out the studio version of "My God" with medieval harmonies and multiple flute tracks (7:14).

Ians voice was already going .. .after his throat problems he lost his upper register completely but continued to sing ( half sing as only the lower notes were audible ). Even today Ian refuses to hire a vocalist and still half sings the songs himself. The only videos worth watching are those from late 1971 to about 1977......about 6 years of the best quality live hard and heavy rock ever mixed in with jazz and clever folk. At their best live from 1972 to 77.......but not many quality recordings of live performances. Would recommend My God, Hyme 43 and Thick As A Brick..... Please note that Thick As A Brick is a 44 minute song that is edited to the 12 minute version for most live performances. In the 1972 world tour they did the whole song.....was just over an hour of the song with some humour in the middle ( intermission ).

He has, on occasions, hired vocalists due to his vocal limitations. The main problem with his voice was that he overdid it on the Under Wraps tour in 1984/1985 and damaged his vocal chords (made all the more tragic by the fact that, according to Martin Barre, Ian’s voice was better than it had ever been k that tour) which necessitated a year off singing. His voice has got progressively worse over the years. I saw them live 3 times in the late 90s and his voice seriously strained. When I saw them on The 40th anniversary tour he actually had to bring on the lead singer from Tull tribute band Sossity to sing on a number of older Tull songs because he could no longer cope with the vocals. He also hired a vocalist to help on the live performances on Thick As A Brick and Thick As A Brick 2 when he took them on tour. When I saw them a few years ago he was completely inaudible throughout. It was really rather sad. Guitarist Joe Parish sang some of the vocals, but I felt that mad matters worse as Parish has a good voice and it made Ian’s voice seem even worse in comparison. Aqualung was adapted so it was mostly instrumental, with Ian on,y singing towards the end. I refuse to see them play live now because it’s not how I want to remember my favourite band.

Maybe you could interrupt the song again in a few minutes. And to explain why there are 6 strings. On the guitar and then you're next You could explain why the drummer uses two drum sticks instead of just one. Maybe another to explain why they use microphones. I'm sure this will be very helpful

Ian Anderson was very anti-drug. His band members were supposed to be drug free.

plus besides Autotune todays people can not play instruments like this band can, or write music, or write poetry or act out the song........First saw him in about 72 where his band came dressed in rags out and each went through the trash and one by one picked out an instrument, adding them one at a time and played 'Don't want to be a rich man'
