In and out of the back door ran, one front door angel ... her hair was a golden brown ... she smiled and I think she winked her eye ....

I remember when I had Bungle In The Jungle on a 45 Rpm record and this awesome song was on side B.

"Think I'll sit down and invent some fool-some Grand Court Jester. And next time the die is cast, he'll throw a six or two." Ian's lyrics are intrinsically deep. It doesn't matter what your faith is or what you believe in, life is still random. Thanks for posting this fantastic song that doesn't get enough attention or credit.

Hey, I had this on a 45. It was the side b of "bungle in the jungle." I lost it along with Alice cooper "school's out" and a bunch of other cool stuff. Thank God for youtube! Long live Tull!

A GREAT SONG from a GREAT ALBUM. Elizabethan rock at it's finest. I may have the only live film footage of the band playing this song. (Landover, Maryland early July 1976).

@marktull Dude, you speak with the most understanding of Ian's words........thank you. I have been so inspired to hear the out pouring of love for one of the greatest examples of classic progressive rock ever. Songs come to Ian out of the blue. Both hauntingly simple melodies, and endlessly complex passages! History will prove his longevity. People love melody, and musicians admire ambitiousness. Genius.

I totally agree!!!! Many of Martin's best guitar solos/breaks don't have any real structure to them, but they still instill plenty of feeling in you. Another excellent example is his solo in Black Satin Dancer, particularly the live version off of the 20 Years box set. Anyone who considers Tull to have just been Ian is not a true fan of the band.

Rutheford Wakeman and Howes music was very similar too. But no one was, or is now even remotely similar to Jethro Tull and the Music they created.

@willicat441 Ian is not only a great composer, lyricist, musician and performer. He is an artist and poet. He says, he is somewhere in between a Deist (believes a supreme being created the universe but does not intervene. There are no prophecies or miracles and god exists without religion) and a Pantheist (the universe/nature and God are identical). This knowledge gives some insight to his complex lyrics. It is a shame that the critics misunderstood him. I agree with you, he is a genius.

@jcscbloom. I agree. Although, at the time I contradicted myself. Liked "Bungle..". At the same time (14 yrs.?) was odd enough to go out and buy "The Passion Play!":)

Life is indeed random, in it's defiance of any formula that discounts the random influences of individuals that must be accounted for but seldom are. On a much finer focus the proclivities of individuals at any given moment within the range of their "catch moment" must be added to any calculation moment, It sounds impossibly complex but the more successful of us do it several time a day inherently. .

Actually, I think its more of a slam on organized religion.. "The bloody Church of England.." "Graven image you-know-who.." (Catholics). Also.. if you read the liner notes, there is a section that says "'in the beginning, Man created God.."

And in the song "My God": "He is the god of nothing - if that's all you can see. You are the god of everything - He's inside you and me." Perhaps we have to work hard to fulfill our dreams, not just pray for them.

It's stupid how long I stared at this photo, the "back" of the original LP (or was it inside)? One of the greatest concerts I've ever seen, and they played this, in Hershey Park in 1975. Freaking greatest rock guitarist of all time, Martin Barre. My opinion, sorry. I'm in love with Hendrix and that Zepp band and Pete and John McGlocklin (spelling) and the rest, sorry. But Martin takes the cake.Saw the man 11 or 12 times with Tull, oh oh oh myyyy!!!

the five greatest concerts 4 me were yes in the round 1979, kansas leftoverture tour mid-late 70's, queen at the peak of their estimable power around 1976, and todd rundgren's utopia @ temple music festival ambler late 70's, but the best, better even than these GREAT performances, was the jethro tull war child tour at the spectrum in 1975. i recall being in high school and somehow scoring a lower second level seat almost parellel to the stage for FIVE DOLLARS. that night, i was witness to three hours of scathing, scalding precision by impeccably costumed professionals. TOP professionals. that was the jethro tull i remember

I was at that same concert at the old Hershey Park Arena. I lived about I hour away. Live in TN. now. Great memories of back then.

This was the 'B' side of Bungle in the Jungle (for those old enough to remember 45's). It should have been the A side. Definitely a better song

Those guitar breaks are so crap...and yet they're sooo goooood! No structure. No real speed or dexterity. No melody. But...they're beautiful.
