You gotta give props to the guitarist and master of those awesome riffs, Martin Barre. Here;s a bit of trivia, the band is named after an actual person. Jethro Tull was a 17th century English agriculturist. He is credited with the invention of the seed drill which nade planting crop fields much more efficient.

That's Barriemore Barlowe on drums. He's one of the absolutely great underrated drummers. And for some reason this particular performance and your reaction makes me want to suggest the studio version of the Tull song BUDAPEST. Great reaction. Martin Barre is one of the smokinest lead guitar players ever.

I completely agree. Barrimore Barlow deserves the justified accolades that are heaped on many other prog drummers. He was one of Neal Peart's biggest influences. Ian Anderson was also a big inspiration with his method of lyric writing.

One of his best live performances, imho, is the song “Thick as a Brick” live at Madison Square Garden in 1978. They were all top notch musicians. I saw them live many times and Ian Anderson was a great frontman, always putting on a show.

I like both the Tampa show in '76 and the BBC show from '77 better, but the '78 show is definitely good. I just think his voice is better in the earlier two versions. To me there is a sharp difference between '77 and '78. But, he should definitely watch one of those three.

I've seen Jethro Tull in concert about 40 times. There is no better frontman! Barrimore Barlow is a great drummer. He had a HUGE drumset. You can see his drum solo on youtube. I saw them a few times, from the War Child tour up to a dozen or so years ago. They absolutely know both how to play at a very high level AND to entertain at a very high level. I've been a fan of Jethro Tull since 1974, with their album release of 'War Child.' This song, "Cross-Eyed Mary" is from their 1971 album, 'Aqualung.' I was fortunate enough to see them twice (1977 & 1980) and they were outstanding!! The singer/flutist is Ian Anderson and the BAND is Jethro Tull. Not many other rock bands use the flute so prominently. Only 2 come to mind: The Moody Blues and (on a few early releases) Heart. Check out Tull's live performance of "My God" from the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. There you will witness a grand flute solo from Ian Anderson!! ✌✌✌

Ian Anderson was, and is, one of a kind. There has never been another front man like him. Listening to Tull is only half the picture. Watching Anderson perform these songs is the other half. Saw Tull a few times at MSG NYC in the 70s. the sound of his flute filling a 20,000 seat arena was awesome.

One of the most fun concerts I’ve ever been to! The story I heard was that Ian Anderson (lead vocals and flautist) played guitar but decided he was behind after hearing Eric Clapton and Jimmy Hendrix play. He swapped his guitar for the flute and some cash. He’s actually a good guitarist.

I have seen, heard and experienced many talented and skillful "frontmen" during the 1008 concerts I've attended in my life. Also, some great "frontwomen", for that matter. I would estimate I have seen, 750? maybe 800? different bands? I've seen a plethora of bands, multiple times. When it comes too listing some of the best "ever frontmen" I have seen or "leaders of the band" while performing and also a "Pied Piper" for the concert goers, one MUST ALWAYS include, "Ian Anderson" of Jethro Tull. Seemingly an impossibility, the man just didn't seem to ever suffer from any throat problems or shredded vocal cords wile on the road. He was always, without fail night after night, "Nailing it". And I always thought, "Elvis", was the ONLY one who somehow miraculously escaped those types of throat problems wile on the road. Ians flute is an instrument and also a "prop". He definitely includes it into the entire "choreography" of a show quite masterfully. Skillfully and with much intent, playing it HARD, twirling it like a baton, throwing it HIGH into the air and then catching it and using it in other cool ways on stage. His high energy and the over the top animations his body seems too emit each evening makes him EASILY among "the GREAT frontmen" like Freddy Mercury, Mick Jagger, Peter Wolf, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Little Richard, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Plant, Steven Tyler, Steve Perry, Ray Davies, Jimi Hendrix and Joe Cocker too name a few.

I saw Jethro Tull play for the first time at a psychedelic bash at the London School of Economics as a seventeen year old hippie girl in 1968, with Soft Machine and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. I seem to remember the flyer for the event read: Mind Dragnet - Bubbles - Happenings - Mark Boyle's Liquid Light Show. Arthur Brown was superb, sort of Screamin' Jay Hawkins meets Grand Guignol on acid. Soft Machine - second only to Syd's Pink Floyd in the London UFO underground - blew everyone away with their collision of Dada Esque English whimsy, and avant garde psychedelic improvisational jazz rock. As for Jethro Tull they were an unremittingly dull third rate blues band. Their only stand out feature which I guess got them noticed, was their singer who was passing himself off as a kind of Worzel Gummidge who did the great jazz musician Roland Kirk impersonations rather badly. Twenty minutes into their set two thirds of the audience, who all being pretty stoned, who were quite prepared to listen to most rubbish if it appeared at the very least a little outré and a bit weird, left like me for the bar or went outside to smoke a joint or impart some piece of universal wisdom to a passing stranger as 200 mikes of 'Blue Cheer' went ripping through their frontal cortex. The summer of that same year - '68 - I went to the first free hippie music concert in Hyde Park. Included on the bill were Pink Floyd sans Syd Barrett - hugely disappointing - they had lost their viscerally dangerous, improvisational edge and other World 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' strangeness that Barrett had brought to the band, and Tyrannosaurus Rex first outing. Marc Bolan went from Mod maven to fey androgynous hippie pixie who scrubbed his acoustic guitar and bleated like Larry the Lamb. Sort of 'proto punk' Incredible String Band does Eddie Cochran. The music was a bit useless but at least Bolan was pretty - this was before his fat boy turkey in baco foil glam rock period. Finally there was the 'Tull' as they would affectionately become known as by their aficionados. In the six months that had elapsed since I'd had the misfortune to see them at the LSE they hadn't improved, in fact they were even worse, but this time they had acquired a little more pretension. Little did we know that we were witnessing the beginning of that most terrible of music genres, the dawn of the age of 'prog' rock!!!!' Shriek!! Shriek!! The singer still dressed as Wurzel Gummidge gurned his way through the entire set, wheezing asthmatically into his flute while attempting to stand on one leg without falling over, and the band rumbled relentlessly on bludgeoning the audience with a combination of cod metal/folk/prog rock with a side order of pedestrian white boy blues. Luckily it was a wonderful English summers day, the vibe was beautiful - as we used to say - as were the 'Beautiful People.' There was an abundance of cheap red wine, 'California Sunshine,' 'Strawberry Fields' and 'Lebanese Candy' to ameliorate the tedium of the 'Tull.' Little did we know that the Tull represented a counter revolution to the counterculture and the wonder that was late 60's underground music. Little did we know that they presaged the horror that was to come, the horror that would be - Genesis, Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, Barclay James Harvest and all those juvenile dystopian futures, Tolkien sword and sorcery obsessed pseudo symphonic 'pomp rock' rock bands . Lots of ersatz virtuoso showboating, embarrassing 6th form lyrics and widdly widdly time signatures, signifying nothing other than their own ineptitude and lack of imagination. 50 odd years on to paraphrase William Whitelaw, dear old Jethro Tull are still "Going round and round the World stirring up apathy."

this is why don't like it when you do studio versions of songs. Sometimes you MUST see some bands live
