I am 65 & 1/2 and this period of time you're talking about was unrepeatable. Amazing music from all of those bands you've mentioned . I've been keeping up with the Jethro Tull reissuea . They are just perfect. I wish other groups took the Tull format abd released their boxsets in a similar fashion. Thanks for your podcast 😂🎉

Great set review!!! Thanks for the heads up on the rather quiet re-releases of the Minstrel and Songs from the Wood late last year. Do you think Passion Play and Warchild will see similiar re-relases this year?

Phil, this was the one and only tour I was fortunate enough to see them and as it turns out, it was the least visually documented. What I remember the most about the performance was at the end, after the band had left the stage, a telephone began ringing which was at the front, center of the stage. It rang for a few minutes, the house lights had come up and people were starting to leave but the phone kept ringing... then Ian Anderson appeared from behind a curtain, walked to the phone, answered it and then held the phone out to the audience and said: "It's for you". and left.

Glad to Discover another one loves this album. I am convinced the critics and most audience had no idea what to make of it, having no knowledge of passion plays from centuries ago, as well as being anti-religious (for good reasons). But that’s a major reason why I love Tull, the deep, historical connections.

I love Jethro Tull and had a weird history with them. I must say that for many years (about 40 years) I had only listened to Aqualung and Stand Up. During the pandemic I listened to Minstrel in the Gallery and it caught me. Then "Thick...." and I was fascinated, hypnotized. He continued with Benefit, "Songs...,"Heavy Horses", "Stormwatch. Even Broadsword seems fantastic to me. But "Passion Play" was always an album that was difficult for me to incorporate. IMO it's NOT up there with the top five, but I like it a lot.

This is a gem of a box set. According to Ian Anderson I must be mad, as he doesn't rate it himself, personally I prefer it over TAAB, sorry Ian. This is Steve Wilson at his best, piecing back together the Chateau timeline as Ian had originally recorded it, stripping it of IA's 90's flute additions, taking us back to the 70's and how it might have sounded if it had been released as intended. The Chateau tapes are as good as the official later album. I also love the inclusion of The Foot of the Stairs material on Passion Play itself, cut out by Ian from the album proper. Stephen Wilson's respect and truth to the original material is another reason for me (from the many) I love these box sets.

My fave Tull album. It covers hard rock, acoustic material and is good to sing to and dance to. The Nightcap versions have added flute which were recorded in the 90s. The same tracks on the SDE have the flute removed.

Hi Phil, I am really enjoying your Tull series. I bought this album, Summer '73 (still have the LP) and it is my all time fave. It is hard to believe now, that the FM rock stations would actually play 2 of the edits from side 2 (So. Calif.,USA) ...lots of great music then. Tull and Led Zep. were very popular on the concert scene, selling out arenas. I watched your "location" vid on "Physical G." and the background looks very similar to the one from the vid. of Tull's "Dunringill"-from the "Slipstream" vid. ,included in the "A" Box..I noticed that you own them all, check it out. Cheers

Another one I picked up from Amazon on pre-order for £16 when it was released. I have to admit this album took me well over a decade to really appreciate it. When you look at the "hare who lost his spectacles" you can see that the same PYTHON-ESC! humour continues from their previous album Thick As A Brick. I love this album more today than I ever have though I still regard TAAB as my ultimate favourite Tull album. The reason for this is really how well that album was stitched together to make it sound like one continuous song. With Passion Play even though like TAAB it was done in two parts it sounds more like a collection of songs stitched together and that is where it falls short to my ears. But what I love about most Tull albums are the acoustic elements and the fact that A Passion Play still has those is why I like it. Really enjoying your channel and how you so well present things Phil and have subscribed.

This is my favourite Tull album and I only got seriously into the band about 5 years ago. I believe it's not Anderson's most favoured, a bit like with Robert Fripp and 'Lizard', which happens to be my favourite King Crimson album. I'd heard of the Chateau recordings but haven't listened to them yet. Hopefully I can get this book or 'Night Cap' at least. Cheers, Ian

Phil has the true jewel in the crown of Tulls back catalogue "Living in the past" been given this deluxe box set treatment? I know there was a 25th anniversary two cd set and I can't find little else. To me this album was the true "king of the hill" of Tull albums.

This is the best Jethro Tull album above Thick as a Brick for his composition , sophistication and power , all members in this album performed at their best.
