The Eagles toured as support to Tull several years before Hotel California was written. However, Don Felder (who wrote the music for Hotel California) was not in the band at that time. Ian Anderson has said that if Tull was an inspiration then he’s flattered and that he has absolutely no problem with it because being inspired by previous music is all part of composition. He adds that he is likely to have been inspired by something that he had heard previously. Music is a chain.

Agreed. Ian Anderson's reaction about that was class act. Even though "Hotel California" is a powerful classic, "We Used to Know" is such an underrated gem.

Now as it seems obvious that you will break 10 K you might as well jump straight to Thick as a Brick :). For me the mandolin and the drumming reminded more of medieval folk music. Ian did use it a lot in his music. Maybe the best example of this is Songs from the Wood (1977) which would be a great album for you as well.

@@markmaxwell1013 Benefit is the odd LP in Jethro's history. This Was and Stand Up where the albums of the rhythm’n blues era of Jethro Tull and Aqualung started the proggressive period - but Benefit doesn’t really fit to either one of these. But let's think of the year the album was made - 1970 - and in comparison with other bands of the same era. Then Benefit fits to it’s place nicely: Yes: Time and a Word, Gentle Giant: 1st, Genesis:Tresspass, King Crimson: In the Wake of Poseidon, Pink Floyd: Atom Heart Mother and also: Led Zeppelin: II, Deep Purple: In Rock - or even: Uriah Heep: Very ‘eavy, Very ‘Umble. This is a very special album for me. When I was a teenager, my sister, 10 years older than me, used to gently nudge books, music etc at me and say, 'this may be worth a listen ...' "Stand Up" came to me that way and I have loved it every since. 'Thick as a Brick' is my favorite Tull album, but this one, ah, it hits so many right notes in so many right ways. Looking forward to your take on "For a Thousand Mothers": never heard anyone say that it was special to them, but it is to me. Thanks for doing all this. Makes the music new again, and an (ahem) older man feel younger again.

Not enough is being made about the sheer musicianship of the host nor his skillfully adept editing skills...first, the bongo's make a majestic surprise appearace from under the table as if a hidden treasure had just swept on the crest of a wave and beaching by JP's feet. That in itself had me chuckling, but then comedy gold as we saw the finest playing of bongo drums since Andy Kaufman played them whilst singing a song thats played in the islands of the Caspian Sea at Harvest time...the remarkable transition from serious review into playing said instrument and then back to serious review was as effortless as a Pink Floyd transitional moment on any given album of theirs. Unfortunately this jewel in the crown moment had a price to be paid...which in my case was eloquently spitting out the coffee I was drinking whilst watching the review...I now have a caffinated coated cat who is not amused.

@@JustJP Well I pretty much can't wait for you to get to almost all the 70's album, but my suggestion is still to do them in _chronological order_ so that you can hear their imo very fascinating evolution from album to album. I even say try and squeeze in *Benefit* before *Thick as a Brick* And I totally recommend revisiting *Aqualung* in your own time before *Thick as a Brick* so that you get the most complete experience 🧐👌
@Ferretbomber

@@kayleenilsson3825 oh, all of their albums deserve attention for sure. I'm just not a stickler for chronology, but I am a firm believer in hearing an album all the way through, or at least in song order. Tull is definitely an album band. Albums with no filler along with excellent 'contextual continuity' as Zappa would say. I think Justin would be able to skip around in time scales and see the changes each year, but i'd like him to hear full albums either way. He's finishing Stand Up, I could see doing Benefit, but I'd rather he hear something mid-late 70s so he has a more informed idea of the vast range the band took over a pretty short span of years, so that he could have a sort of conceptual yardstick by which to compare the rapidity of Tull's growth. They were a singular band, no one like them. But yeah, Benefit rocks, Passion Play, Warchild, Minstrel in the Gallery ... (not a huge fan of Too old to rock and roll) ... but then Songs From the Wood spectacularly sends them off in a new direction. Gotta love Tull.

@@Ferretbomber I kinda see what you mean, JP covers so many other bands that it takes some time to advance in the JT journey and thus the later albums seems so far away and it'd take quite some time before he gets to see how much they change. It's hard to say but I still lean towards going in order.

I saw Jethro Tull on 11th March 1969, when I was 15, at the Redcar Jazz Club in the UK. That was only the 2nd professional act I had ever seen (The Nice on 7th February 1969), and had no idea what they looked like or how they performed; what an eye opener that was for me, especially Ian Anderson. We had a table only a couple of yards from the centre of the stage, so a superb view of all the band.

Regarding the album, it's allegedly Ian's personal favorite in the JT discography., although personally it lands on either fourth or fifth place. But then again, my favorite from them is A Passion Play, which is hardly in agreement with most other fans.

Most of the 70's albums have been my favorite at one point or another. Currently working on *A Passion Play* , I like it a lot, especially in combination with the *The Chateau D'Herouville Sessions* but no favorite as of yet, it usually takes some time to get to that point though so there's still hope. Just curious, what would you say is it's strongest point, conceptually or musically? Both I guess, it's just nice hearing from other fans what they think 🙂

Something I like about the Tull albums is that the songs are very different from each other but they managed to make an album with a special atmosphere, somehow. In my opinion you can hear this better on Benefit which has an overall warmth what is the reason that I like it even a little bit more. I remember when being in school we had a music teacher who was a concert pianist what sometimes led to a lesson where he taught nothing but enjoyed us by playing a Beethoven sonata or a little bit of Chopin or Bach what makes such a difference from listening to a record... A classmate who at that time was kind of addicted to Tull brought this album and asked the teacher to listen to Bourée and Fat Man. He admitted that this would not become his favourite kind of music but he paid his respect to what he had heard. That was not normal 50 years ago. Dirty, long-haired, loud barbarians with extremely bad manners! The guitar on We Used to Know is one of my all time favourite solos ever. It is just perfect.

Absolutely loved both tracks...I'm not overtly familiar with the majority of JT's work, and having made the journey down the now cliched rabbit hole with these reactions its led me to listen their catalogue and I can honestly say I'm now a big big fan, especially 'Thick as a Brick'...but with it comes my own thick as a brick moment regarding Tull...so back in 77, I was in an Italian street market and bought Pink Floyds 'Wish you were here' album, but I had enough lira's to buy that other album whose cover had caught my eye. It was Minstral in the Gallery...so, back home in England, played Tull first, remember little about it, then the Floyd album...the latter absolutely blew my mind to the point I totally forgot about Minstral which was stored away never to see the light of day until tonight...after these two songs, I remembered I had it and played it after all these years...I mean thats over 42 years and oh my lord, its utterly brilliant, how could I have been so, well, thick!!!. Wow, Black Satin Dancer and Baker Street Muse, what a band, stunning album...great review again JP.

Digital music misses out on the visceral pleasure of getting that new album, checking the the inside art/liner notes, removing the vinyl and holding it up to the light to check for scratches and last and most importantly arranging your album collection just right. Stand Up was a fold-over album and when you opened it up a cardboard cut-out of the four guys would "stand up". There is no album that i know of that the cover/jacket is more integral to the message than Thick as a Brick. The album came wrapped in the fictional St. Cleve Chronical. It is very much part of the satire.

Fatman is one of my all time fave Tull tracks.... Clive Bunker is sublime. Hey JP Stand Up was 1969 and the Eagles HC was 1976. No contest. If you have a close listen to Fatman you'll hear two Mandolins playing.... Martin Barre is also playing.

Two very different songs, both enjoyable. Perhaps, I was a bit disappointed at the title of the song. I prefer sexy Dad bod or He’s just Stocky man... well, I’m working on it, besides, it’s normal in the winter to have a little more cushion for the pushin. BTR, liked the Moroccan feel very much of Fatman. As far as, We Used To Know, really didn’t hear the HC similarities but, another listen, it will probably slap me in the face. Great wah solo, very impressive. Martin did good. Hope everyone has a great day and a great life... ooops, trademarked. You know, love ya, mask up, be kind, Peace and Music

Remember JP this was also way before the Eagles song, it is Tulls melody !! : ) Their are subtle changes in the melody to "Hotel" but years later the Eagles said it was just coincidence, there are only so many notes ! Lol This has happened many times in Rock music.

2 great songs I've known for a long time and great review since you furthered my appreciation with good insights. And as a footnote Fat Man's Eastern sonic sense makes me think of the Zen notion, even though the song's lyrics seem quite literal, of a fat man being an egotistical sort who's always talking because he has so much information he's collected in his head that he believes himself highly knowleadgable and must constantly chatter and a thin man being a person who's done away with useless thinking and is closer to serenity. So because the music has an Indian musical quality it provokes a certain Yogi sort of atmosphere whilst colliding with Western literalness of just being overweight. I'm probably over thinking it, but it's always hit me that way. 👍

OK, Fat man is just a sublime slice of Tull magnificence imo. It's funny, light. Gorgeous bongos make this such a great song butty. Ian, s acoustic, superb, and hear that moth organ.. Lush. 😊 Martin's guitar work on We used to know is stunning imo. Great groove by Clive too. Ian, s vocal delivery is just magic.❤️ The band really rock out on this track Justin. Great review butty 😊 Like you said, it's a brilliant album by Tull. ❤️

Justin, just two songs left on this album, a love song (as only Tull could pull off) and a full out banger. Can't wait till you get to these, but after you do, do yourself a favor, ask your lovely wife for 45 minutes alone to go lay down, put the headphones on, and listen to the album uninterrupted start to finish.... and then let us know if you've ever heard a better example of song composition, musicianship, and execution in the rock album genre. Oh wait, you could do the same thing with at least a half dozen or more Tull albums and come to the same conclusion. But this album is the one that begat legions, millions of lifelong Tull fans, including me, and I thank you so much for your appreciation of this often long-forgotten music. Given your apparent admiration for Tull, ask yourself how is this band not in the rock n roll hall of fame???????

I remember Fat Man from when I was exploring early Tull as a teen in the 70s. I like the line, I don't want to be a Fat Man. It has stuck with me for decades. At 59, I can still pedal my age in miles fairly easily. No chance of ever being a Fat Man. I still can't find a woman though.

Man I'm enjoying this album. Oh Yeah, loved "Fat Man", great tune. Was that bongos being played? "We used to know" was a nice tune as well. Since you mentioned Hotel California and the chord progression. I wasn't paying attention on first listen but yeah the progressions by intervals are similar. Both are 8 chord songs, however the 7th chord is a major in this song vs a minor in Hotel California. Regardless of progression similarities, both songs are different melodically and in no way resemble each other rhythmically or in melody (which you mentioned). Enjoyed the reaction.

I thought the line was 'Hate to admit to myself Half of my problems came from Being fat'. Makes more sense. And Rolling down a mountain faster than any one else? That is no compliment. Don't take any pains to make it PC. Ian could be very biting and caustic with his lyrics. I don't think this is a sympathetic song in any way. But he did make a nice tune with it!
