Nice to hear the studio version as that has the great Piano intro, a lot of live versions miss a lot of the intro (but are still great) also as this is usually the end/encore of the show live versions often have other songs added to them. It was so obvious that Sifa knew this song quite well, as she was singing along and knew when the flute was coming in - which was quite nice to see.

Agreed. The intro really makes this song for me. The piano is just breathtaking, all the way through.

Song meaning from Ian Anderson “Locomotive Breath” is a metaphorical examination of the incessant and often overwhelming momentum of society. Anderson has often referred to the song as a reflection on the industrial age’s unstoppable-and sometimes destructive-force.

Thank God for Jethro Tull! I think, locomotive breath refers to the rapid passing of life as a train speeding down the rails with its brake lever broken off. Hence “ no way to slow down.” live at the Isle of Wight is their song remains the same. Thanks for the reaction.!

That has become the concert closure for years as the entire Aqualung album is a play. And since my friend had Aqualung on 8 track when the release, Tull had become y favorite artist.

Jethro Tull Rocks, nice to see them getting some love. For some more incredible stuff from Ian Anderson & co, try Minstrel in the Gallery or With You There to Help Me, they were a force of nature in the 70s and have tons of great and unique tunes to try. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Ian Anderson plays flute, acoustic and electric guitar bass drum and hi-hat on this. The story of a man who's life is falling apart due to capitalism and population explosion. I love this song and Jethro Tull will always be one of the masters of true Prog rock.

Not sure where the population explosion comes into it. More the story of a man becoming isolated as his family leaves him one by one. But yes a classic without doubt.

@@paulfenwick8767 I know Ian said that in an interview somewhere. It's just not in the lyrics though. Train as a metaphor of life...children leaving for lives of their own, wife having an affair, man wants it to stop but can't make time slow down. Where is a mention of capitalism??

@@amedeeabreo7334 As I thought, you know better than Ian Anderson 😄. The train is capitalism, relentless driving on, telling you greed is the only way to live. Ian, like my self, is a socialist. That word is evil to most but all it means is think of others rather than just yourself. You won't get it unless you have social friendly views.

John Evan on piano. The introduction always reminds me of Tchiakovsky #6 for some reason. Evan was well versed in classical piano. It is a very visual piece of music...at first it seems like a piano player is musing to himself..then suddenly a rock band pushes him out of the way and gets right into your face.

From the album, Aqualung (1971), "Locomotive Breath" lyrics are metaphoric & critiquing society. Ian Anderson was warning us about the runaway population explosion going hand-in-hand with the moral decay of mankind. It cannot be stopped as civilization's progressive development has literally become a runaway train.

I always thought that Martin Barre had a unique guitar style. In the early Tull albums like "Stand Up" and "Benefit" he was just learning, and he played basic blues riffs, like we all did. As Ian Anderson was learning the flute, it forced Martin Barre to learn new forms, not associated with traditional Rock His phrasings are always Explosive, each riff attacks the first note of the phrase giving an Edge to Ian's traditional English Folk Style Compositions.

Saw them a bit l8r, '75: 'Bungle in the Jungle', Gary Wright opening; '76 Pontiac Superdome, Robin Trower opening. His breathy articulated exhalations are an absolute Ian Anderson trademark. ✌🏼😘🎶❤️✨️🕊

IanA sez he wrote the song about what he thought was runaway global overpopulation... The completely inaccurate book ThePopulationBomb was huge bestseller at the time. From wiki: "From the opening page, it incorrectly predicted worldwide famines due to overpopulation, as well as other major societal upheavals, and advocated immediate action to limit population growth." Love Tull, even when they get the story wrong! And love Sifa telling Dan that "It gets even better!"

Too bad the world didn't listen to reason. Overpopulation doesn't cause the problems, but it is a powerful catalyst, making the problems a thousand times worse. Not to mention all the bi products of too many people, like the pollution that is killing the planet with climate change, and humanity health issues.

There is a band called the Alan Parsons Project. You guys would be blown away by them in the same way you were with ELO and Supertramp! Try 'Eye in the sky', 'Time', 'Old and wise', and 'The Raven'. Alan Parsons helped produce Dark side of the moon and Abbey Road. They will send you to places in the higher realms! I also would suggest Renaissance, another prog rock band from the 70s. With a vocalist off the charts- Annie Haslam. 'Carpet of the sun' is one of my favorites. 'Can you hear me' is another. They have many.

That was fun. Glad you did the studio version. Easy to hear the great lyrics, the intro is wonderful, and I've always loved the little guitar fills in the main part of song in the studio version. Assume it was Martin, but Ian played some electric on this song so who knows. My favorite Tull song, though I love a lot of them.

@@johnirvine1491 A very good question. The one I like the most (and seems to be the one most reacted to) is from the July 10th 1982 concert. Most of the clips seem to omit the piano intro (a shame) but I find the performances to be excellent. Anderson’s flute playing is especially good and Barre is in top form. The balloons in the audience always remind me of “The Prisoner”.

Great song. One day when you have 10min to spare check out Ian's flute solo in Tampa Bay 1976 on YT. It's got everything. The singing while he's playing, beat box flute (some call him the granddaddy of beat box flute) and a little Bach thrown in. It's quite amazing. If you like him, you'll love this. This is from the album, Aqualung (1971). It is Jethro Tull's all-time biggest seller though not their highest ranking as far as peak chart position goes. Thick As A Brick (1972) was their number one album on Billboard. Aqualung still holds up over 50 years later. It's a perfect album with so much variety from track to track.
