Jethro Tull owned American music for a while. Not the stuff you heard on the radio. The good stuff. They called it "prog rock" as a way to insult it but it was as good as it gets. The rest of the album is just sensational. It came out in 1971. Thick As A Brick followed in 1972. I saw the tour they did promoting that album. They played it for an hour and a half then did all of Aqualung as their first encore. It was midnight before that was over but they played on. The concert lasted until 1 a.m. with Anderson imploring fans not to rat them out to the music union for playing so long. Locomotive Breath lasted about 20 minutes that night. So there are examples of them playing it far longer than the album version. Tull epitomized rock in that era. My friends lived and died Tull. More even than Zep, more than Pink Floyd, more than The Who. It was "the" album for a very long time. There was plenty of great music coming out but it was Tull that kept us spellbound. They put on the best concert I ever saw by far and I saw The Who, Pink Floyd, The Allman Brothers, Grand Funk and a whole lot more. Nobody played live like Tull. It was mind boggling at the time. It was the days of festival seating when I saw that 1972 tour. People crowded the stage starting with the firswt encore. We stood on the BACKS of folding chairs for hours with one foot behind you and one foot on the chair in front. It was impossible to fall down unless the entire crowd fell. It was a moment like no other. Their 1976 tour was actually better. But that first show was pure magic. I can't begin to describe it. There was just too much to talk about. You just had to be there.

I wish that I'd been born ten years earlier and I'm envious of people like you who saw them in their hay day. Me and my late brother were introduced to tull by our also late cousin in about 78 but didn't get to see them until their 25th anniversary concert when they were past their best, but I agree that they were definitely on the cutting edge of what we now call prog rock, just so great and Anderson was such a clever writer and player. Also they spent more time touring in places like America and abroad rather than being at home so us British didn't see as much of them as the rest of the world when they were big news, so once again you were so lucky to have experienced the music of that era, an era that just won't be matched again I fear.

Saw Tull in 1972 at the Chicago Auditorium Theater. 3 full hours of non-stop madness. I was in the 7th balcony (the acoustics in that place were amazing). During the concert my hair kept blowing around. After the concert, my ears rang for a solid day. Came to find out, the theater had installed quad sound in the 7th balcony. Talk about LOUD?!?!?! I should've known with everyone's hair flying around even when they weren't moving. GOOD TIMES!!!!!

Tull explained the song, "It was my first song that was perhaps on a topic that would be a little more appropriate to today's world. It was about the runaway train of population growth and capitalism, it was based on those sorts of unstoppable ideas. We’re on this crazy train, we can’t get off it. Where is it going? Bearing in mind, of course, when I was born in 1947, the population of planet earth was slightly less than a third of what it is today, so it should be a sobering thought that in one man’s lifetime, our planetary population has more than tripled. You'd think population growth would have brought prosperity, happiness, food and a reasonable spread of wealth, but quite the opposite has happened. And is happening even more to this day. Without putting it into too much literal detail, that was what lay behind that song."

This song has such a powerful constant build of energy throughout it. Starting with the placid opening that elicits someone feeling around to get a sense of their surroundings, then subtly transitions to a feeling of ominous portent as a few darker chords mixed there way in. Suddenly the rider realizes the train has left the station and down the track, hurtling at breakneck speed and out of control. ~ "those intro's, they set you up."

I was lucky enough to see Tull six times, and each time "Locomotive Breath" was the beginning of the final encore. It's not well remembered today, but Tull was one of the loudest bands in concert - and they got louder as the show went on.
