Malays usually eat with the right hand. What is the rationale and why do Malays eat with their hands? This question was answered easily at the end of the 19th century by a royal relative of Kedah who lived in Selangor named Tengku Kudin. This matter was told by a wife of a high-ranking British officer who served in Selangor at that time in her book "Chersonese - The Guilding Off" by Emilly Innes. One day Tengku Kudin was invited by the British Resident to attend a dinner at the resident's house. When all the invited guests were ready to face the meal, Tengku Kudin suddenly got up towards the water tap and washed his hands. Ignoring everyone else's use of spoons and forks, he lazily fed food into his mouth with his hands...! Tengku Kudin's antics were noticed by an English woman who happened to be sitting next to him. Feeling intrigued by Tengku Kudin's behavior, the woman then asked: "Why do you eat with your hands? Isn't using a spoon and fork cleaner and more polite?" Tengku Kudin sloppily answered loudly and could be heard by others. He said: "I eat with my hands for at least three reasons: First: I know my hands are cleaner than spoons and forks because I wash them myself - no one else. The spoon and fork were washed by other people who were not necessarily clean enough. Second: I'm sure my hands are cleaner because I'm the only one who uses them - never borrowed by someone else, whereas the spoon and fork are used by many people Third: I believe my hands are cleaner because they never fall down the drain...!!" Tengkun Kudin's answer left everyone who heard it speechless. If before that there were some of them who smiled cynically when they saw Tengku Kudin feeding his food with his hand but after that each of them nodded maybe because they thought there was logic in the answer. I love your mom’s honest observations and the 2 positive things that she pointed out are exactly the 2 things Malaysia are known for (in a positive light) ie food and people. It warms my heart and made me shed a little tear (I’ve been following her journey since she got here) towards the end of the video. Two things I want to comment on : 1. Motorcycle jackets were worn that way because normally the wind and the rain will hit the rider from the front side. It’s too warm and too restrictive to totally button the jackets up 2. I agree that even in the capital city, Malaysia is not handicapped and pedestrian friendly. I think the issue was raised a few years ago but nothing happened. 3. I chuckled at the big spoon comment. I think (I could be wrong), the amount of rice we put in our hand is even more than what we can fit on the big spoon. So actually, for us, the spoon is not big enough 😅 Anyway, I’ve only ever followed your videos since you brought your mom here. Her experience is such a joy to watch. I hope mom and dad enjoyed their time in Malaysia and would come again.

Your mother asked a valid point regarding how difficult it is for those with disabilities to get around KL. Most pavements have uneven surfaces and are rather small. It's challenging for those who use wheelchairs as well as prosthetic leg users. I speak from personal experience as a double amputee. In addition to being small, the pavement is crowded with motorcycles parked on it. which makes things harder for us to deal with.

It's good to hear the comments from your mum and the way she observe the cultural differences. As a Malaysian, eating with our hand (right hand as the left hand is for something else 😇) actually taste better...but it's usually for plain rice with side dishes and not for fried rice which are mostly eaten using a spoon and sometimes with a fork as well. And I can understand the shock when she noticed that we can have rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and sometimes for supper as well) as rice is very much a staple food here. Welcome to this part of the world, Diane and hope you'll have many fond memories of Malaysia. We're getting so used to seeing you on JetLag and will certainly miss you when you go back to Canada. 😊❤

You'll notice that our spoons are thinner- so we use the side of the spoon to cut the meat. I'm ashamed to say most of our toilets are awful when it comes to cleanliness and dryness. And yes, you are expected to bring your own tissue. We don't have a walking culture here and yes, it's very wheelchair unfriendly. But like you said, Malaysians will stop and help when the situations requires it. I read somewhere from a traveller who said that Malaysia is the best country to visit if you're travelling with a baby as you will always get more help than you need with the baby, anywhere, anytime. As a Malaysian, we are very warm hosts who are proud of our culture and especially our food. We will be disappointed when you don't like a certain thing, but we also appreciate your honest opinion. And then we will challenge ourselves to introduce you to something more to your style and that you will like. Overall, it was great to see a middle aged (no offence meant- it's just to emphasise that at that age one can be quite set in their ways and can have certain expectations in Life) caucasian couple trying everything and giving honest opinions. As you have experienced, eating here is very serious but can be very casual with no airs- if you don't like it, you can spit it out. No one will take offence. Both of you are such good sports. I do hope you will take back with you many great memories of Malaysia.

*Mom, let me teach you how to eat with your fingers.* *1.Wash your right hand. We eat only with our right hand. The left hand...er..I'll tell you about it someday.* *2. Use only the tips of your fingers, its 'not cultured' if the rice or dishes goes all the way up, touches and 'dirtied' your knuckles.* *3. Grab your food, bring it to your mouth. Use the back of your thumb to push the food into your mouth.* *Thats it, mom. Give it a try and good luck.*

Surprisingly (or not surprisingly) this happens a lot to me too, especially during breakfast. Either I get a free nasi lemak or someone already paid the bill for the next 10 person in queue. So we started to pay it forward, which means other people will get their breakfast paid. I guess that’s why this never ends when people started paying forward.

The hose is called Hand Bidet. It has a trigger to press so that water may pressured out from there. Now how does one use is like this. After pooping, you press the trigger and shoot at the anus. One hand holding the bidet the other used to wash the anus. When washing clean, use hand soap to wash your hands. This way of using water is cleaner than the tissue.

What a nice episode, love your mom's honesty & humor. Hope she'll come back to Malaysia once in a while when she has the chance. Btw, i wanna respond to 2 things about what you mom just said: 1. Malaysian (especially Malay & Indian) enjoy eating with their hands, it feels satisfying lol. And we trust the cleanliness of our hands because we take care/wash it ourselves, while forks & spoons are wash by other people which we are not sure of the cleanliness. 2. Most Malaysian (or maybe all?) dont bring our own tissue to the toilet, we prefer to wash our private parts with water. It feels cleaner. I mean if anythings dirty you wash it with water & not wipe it with tissue right?. Lol Keep em video coming Steve, Ivana & mom!

NOT ALL Malaysians eat with their hands, this is a misconception….. most eat with proper fork and spoon, with chopsticks… all depends on the type of food to eat. Only a certain segment eat food with their hands. However, when it come to soupy dishes, everyone eat with a proper spoon, fork, knife or chopsticks. Your son have got the habit to eat with hands and then generalized that misconception. And NOT everyone eat rice for 3 meals a day. As a tourist, most probably your son wants the mother to experience something “different” I’m a Malaysian and following his travel with his family in Malaysia, her son have a tendency to patronized food from a certain segment of Malaysia. It’s wrong to generalize it to the whole population of Malaysia. Just as saying ALL CANADIANS eat this or that. I’m sure NOT all CANADIANS are homogeneous and uniform. Natives in Canada eat differently so does those that live in Quebec too. Nevertheless, it great to have the whole family enjoying their holidays in Malaysia

Toilet papers...You have to travel to malaysia with a lot of tissue papers. Some people like to "steal" them so that is one reason why a lot don't provide it. You eat rice with the spoon. How do you hold rice in a fork? The rice grains will all slip out. It is generally how asians here eat forks and spoon with a plate. Chopsticks if you have noodles and rice in a bowl (for chinese).

Malaysia takes seriously in food hygiene. If a health inspector finds out your gerai / warung had not achieved the standard food hygiene and safety, you will be fine or might settle in court.

@joeylim9319 guess you haven’t met all chinese Malaysian in Malaysia. They are many eating with hands especially when savouring curry rice. Especially in the northern states and east coast states. Cheerio🎉

@@jessl9727 what i am saying is generally, the majority and most of the time, the chinese usually eat with chopsticks and forks and spoon bcos it is their culture.yes some chinese do eat with their hands sometimes when they eat indian and malay food.when they eat chinese food, they don't use their hands right ? they have to use chopsticks and fork and spoon when they eat chinese food right ? i am not criticising or insulting people who eat with their hands.i also like to eat indian and malay food but i prefer to use fork and spoon bcos i don't want to get my fingers messed up bcos it makes me feel uncomfortable.i don't mean to insult the malays and indians, as i said, i still eat indian and malay food sometimes.it can be 2 times a week that i eat indian and malay food bcos i like the taste and the curry and my favorite curry is mutton curry which is available in the indian shops and restaurants.this is a misunderstanding between you and me.i have indian and malay friends also so i cannot insult or crticise them and their culture.

when foreigners come to Malaysia and see people eating with their hands, they are very surprised and they say this in many of their videos on KZbin.so i am only trying to explain to them the traditions and culture of indian and malay people so that they will understand and to help them to understand. this is not a racial and racist issue and i am not a racist bcos i have indian and malay friends. i hope you understand what i am saying. please don't misunderstand me. thank you for your reply

Steve, good to hear your mom's experience in Malaysia. All the while, she would only watch it from your videos, it's totally different when she herself is actually in the video with the real up, close and personal vibes.

Eating with your hands is not strange because hands are designed to be used for it. The flora and enzymes on our fingers are ingested when we eat with our hands, benefiting our digestive system. Hence, eating with hands is known to stimulate the five senses and the nerve endings on the fingers stimulate digestion. Experts also suggest that when eating with hands, one eats in controlled proportions and hence overeating can be avoided.

its FINGER LICKIN GOOD.... of course we wash before and after eating with right hand. and about the hose, we wash it with our left hand middle finger, wash clean,if there is soap, wash it with soap and clean off with clear water.dont worry we malays are hygienic, we shower 2-3 times a day(because we need to do our PRAYERS/5 times a day, in a super clean condition). hope you guys enjoyed your time over here.

Only Malays and Indians eat with their hands, Chinese like me usually don't eat with their hands although I can, but I don't choose to. And most chinese restaurants have utensils.

If you're mentioning you've seen most people eating with their hands, you've probably been eating Indian food in mamak restaurant. If in Chinese food court or restaurant, people eat with chopsticks and soup spoons.

Nice honest review, love it, chuckled about the cultural shock. 1.The reason some countries eating with hand have to do with Geography, that later become culture. We arent afraid to touch water, all year long, unlike northern area, its cold and definitely hard to touch water, this later seep into the culture. 2.The hose, same as above, it aint cold. Another hint:You wash your dishes with water, so the best way to wash your ...with...yeah, water. Dont do that in Canada, painful there. 3.The motorcycles/scooters and jackets etc etc....yeap, our bad hahahaha, other countries are worse! 4.The storefront pedestrian (kaki lima/five feet)...uhh yeah hahaha our bad. 5.Cattles in the street ? Ehh where did you guys went ?
