7 Days croissant is from Greek actually, but its very popular everywhere in Balkan. Im from Serbia and i remember 20 years ago going on a trip with my school and only kids with more money could afford to bring bags of mini 7 Days xD I also remember eating Chipicao croissant (same thing you ate just with stickers for kids lol) and i ate it almost every day for a snack in school, along small apple juice... Ahhh... It was poverty era over here, but still engraving nostalgic feelings :D Its also still kinda similar tho, we aint that much better now.

One of the best combinations is to eat pufuleți after eating chocolate. It enhances their taste. You were lucky to do this in the video. Rum and almond flavour are probably the cheapest to fake out. That is why they became so widely used during the communist era, when all the imported goods were scarce.. Everything was, either rum flavoured, either almond flavoured. The „Eugenia” biscuit could be found everywhere and it was the cheapest. But, it was quite different from the one today. The biscuit was as hard as a rock slab due to the lack of raising agents. The filling was almost as hard. Only the flavour was somehow similar. "Turtă dulce” is gingerbread. "Turtă" is actually a flat, round type of bread made of unleavened dough of wheat or corn. This brings us to "Toortitzi", which is a transliteration of the word "turtiți", meaning "flattened" (plural form). "Halva" is a popular dessert throughout the Balkans, Greece, Turkey, Middle East, and all the way to India. Usually is made from sesame seeds, but we, Romanians, due to the total scarcity of the imported goods during the communist era, had to replace the sesame seeds with sunflower seeds. The sunflower halva remained popular today and this is what you ate (for instance I had never got a chance to taste the real sesame halva until the foll of the communist regime).

The communism never felled ,its a trick , the people that died in 89 died in vain ,believe me or not its your call, we might seem to have more freedom , but it's an illusion , we still bow to the same country that rule us from the shadows and dry us out of our resources, and investments , isn't weird that we get millions of euro for infrastructure , but we got like 100 km of highway in 30 years? Maybe less, And no one knows where the money dissapeared?

There are also pufuleti with a chocolate coating - I first found out about them in the 2010s when I got some free samples - I don't exactly remember when. The chocolate coated pufuleti were kind of horrible - the chocolate was very waxy and the combination of tastes and textures was odd, but I did eat the whole pack. And I can definitely second that rum flavored desserts (especially the older ones) are super popular - even when it comes to home-made ones, 90% of the time if a cake has chocolate, it definitely also has some run flavoring in it.

Yeah.. is pretty oId. But nowadays with so many brands making the Eugenia ..some tend to taste better than others. When I was a kid I don't remember having as many brands with Eugenia like we have today. 😁 But I was rarely a big fan of Eugenia with cocoa cream (even if I am to try the cocoa version ..IateIy I tend to prefer the CROCO brand. Is my favorite so far and for the cocoa version). My personal preference is rather the ones with lemon cream or vanilla. I think they are improved like that (but that's my own preference). 😁

* cracks knuckles * here we go... ROM chocolate, yes it's yummy, it's been around for what seems like forever, the small bar is still the best of them all (of all the assortments they came up with, I mean). Pufuleti, are corn puffs, you can find them flavored too, either from Gusto or Lotto or.. Star (these ones come with peanut flavor, cheese, ketchup and umm... pizza I think... you can find them as a mixt in a bag, they really make the beer go down smoothly when you watch tv). But you gotta admit the "bland" ones make for a great palate cleanser, especially if you had something really sweet. Also, don't know if you have it in the mix yet ( I'm writing as I go, with the video LOL) , but if you're gonna try another childhood snack, it's gotta be what we called "Eugenia"... that's a oblong oval...ish cookie sandwich, white "biscuit" and chocolate filling; now, I've tried pretty much all of them, and came to the conclusion that the brand that's closest to the vintage version, is Croco. Halvita is Nougat with peanuts sandwiched between 2 wafers, or sometimes in a wafer cone ( that's the version we grew up with). Halva is a compound made of (well, more popularly) sunflower seeds, but it can also be found made from sesame seeds, and it comes in 2 main versions: cocoa and vanilla, the cocoa one is better, because it's not as rich...? Can't exactly describe it, all I know is when I was little we used to buy a big block (1kg) of halva and I ate so much, I got sick. Now I'm glad we can find it in small packaging, the ideal one being 200-400g...? My favorite is "Hanu Boieresc", a store brand ( Penny Market). JOE, is not what it was back in the 90's ( mainly because I'm pretty sure it wasn't owned by Nestlé)... it's got a different flavor now, and again, the ones that come closest to the original, are store brands (from Lidl and Penny), the new one is not bad, but the old one had a certain creaminess to the filling and it was more milk chocolaty, if that makes sense. Also the wafer itself was slightly crunchier, but in a crumbly kinda way, not like you're chewing on a tree bark. The covrigi? The best of the best ones in that variety, were "covrigi de Buzau" you could buy them 5-10, tied with a piece of yarn and they were crunchy and yummy and fresh out the oven, with a dusting of salt (excuse me while I'm drooling at a memory), but they now industrialized them and they became what you tasted. I was never tempted to try Toortitzi, so if you like them, enjoy. Cozonac ( aka brioche or babka), I recommend next time to get from a patisserie, or one of those kiosks that sell bread, you'll get a more authentic version of it, that's not coming straight from the hands of a grannie, that is; the Boromir version is too spongy, imo. They do make some other great sweets, if you wanna check their online store. Turta dulce is classic ginger bread with vanilla sugar glaze, but can be found in several varieties, one of them being the version you tried in Serbia. Magura is still good, but try Kinder Delice and see the difference. UGH Poiana used to be so yummy in the version with peanuts or plain milk chocolate, Primola, is great if you buy Papi (it's got that milk cream filling), but for me, nothing beats Fin Carré from Lidl (cheap and yum and melts in your mouth) and Roshen, the bubbly one... yeah. The best ketchup chips I ever had, came from Lay's and then went away, so now I tend to stick to the classic salt chips, cause you can taste the fried potato really well. But then again, Chio is not my favorite brand for chips, but for microwave popcorn... especially the butter one. The 7Days croissant, it's good, but at the price it has now, it's better to get an actual croissant from the ovens at the supermarket or from a patisserie, at least you'll get it fresh and filled with Finetti or Nutella. Sorry this comment turned into a novel. Enjoy your stay and your munchies.

Pufuleți may be simpler ..but they are less unhealthy than compared to Cheetos or the cheese balls thingy that Ivana talked about in the video. But I recommend ,,pufuleți'' made rather with sunflower oil ..not those made with palm oil (cuz the palm oil is worse than sunflower oil, Palm oil ..unheaIthy oil to cook with). Since we have more than 1 brand of pufuleți în Romania you will find some with palm oil and others with sunflower oil (but lately I feel like there are more with palm oil than with sunflower oil) 😄 Last time I eated pufuleți was from the brand ,,Croco'' (with the cartoony crocodile on the bag) and that version uses sunflower oil for pufuleți.

Actually my description of pufuleti, as a Romanian, would be dehidrated mamaliga, or puffiy-crispy mamaliga :)). Yes, they're made of corn and, yes, they are almost tasteless. I never buy them, but when my niece has a bag in the park, I find myself unable to stop putting them into my mouth. My reccomendation of a sweet snack would be salam de biscuiti (crackers salami), if possible the ones in a baloney size, not what you find in the local supermarket. It's not salami, of course, but they sure look like one. And, again, 80% of the recepies are with rum essence :).

🙌🏻 You guys know your romanian words! Awesome! I was very impressed! The Tortizzi has an image with the actualy tortizzi Snack dipped in yogurt actualy. Not hummus or cream chesse. This type of Snack goes very well with yogurt, kefir . I need to try them with sour cream. Cozonac is the best ! Turta dulce as well ! The rom chocolate is awesome !!!! Ivana is spot on with the pronunciations 👏🏻🙌🏻

Halvita is Romanian nuga. But the best is the cheap type. Halva is made from sunflower seeds. Again, look for the cheapest one that you can buy by the kilo. You should try braga, very good drink but very hard to find.

Braga is great, but you're right. It's quite hard to find. There's a braga stall at Obor Market in Bucharest, right next to the famous mici place. Highly recommend both.

Pufuleti is corn with salt … this was made before the 90s fresh and sold, we actually eat as snacks popcorn fresh made, before the 90s, also the grandma was making fresh donuts and placinta with salty cheese, also clatite that are French pancakes with homemade marmalade, rom is really traditional also. Before the 90 we were doing everything in the house even the chocolate, so we don’t have so many unhealthy snacks, almost everything that you can buy now is from the west. Halva is a paste made from sunflower seeds. Thank you for the videos , much appreciated ❤

Eugenia has been produced for more than 70 years in Constanta. Honestly, I don't really like it, but many years ago it was very appreciated. I think they would need an improved recipe adapted to the current times. By the way, I recommend you also try the "Prajitura casei".

When making desserts at home in Romania, at least during my childhood, we had three primary "flavors". One was to use cocoa, and lots of it. Not chocolate, cocoa. - Second and third are rum and vanilla extract respectively. Tiny little vials of rum extract you can find at every corner store, you put like two or three drops of it in any cake or cozonac or pudding or biscuit salami.

So happy to see you guys enjoying our Romanian snacks, I'm living in Canada for the last 13 years and always looking for European stores in Vancouver to satisfy my childhood cravings. We love Eugenia biscuits, in Communism era it was the only snack available and cheap to enjoy at that time, pufuleți and chocolate waffles. Not too many choices. God's blessings and all the best ❤🤗

In Romania you have access to home made foods and cakes (just ask your local friends) which are made from fresh ingredients. If you compare it with most of the supermarket snacks, home made food doesn't contain preservatives, artificial colors nor flavors. Same goes for covrigi made on spot.

it's funny cause we do indeed love rum extract in everything, either that or vanilla extract, probably why the two most popular sweet snacks that carried over from communist times ,Rom and Eugenia, are with rum chocolate and then there's the popular cake u can find in all cake shops "Amandina". Halva is all over this region from the turkish influence, I actually think the bulgarian one is the best but they're all similar. Oh and if you like cozonac, you can find it freshly baked in many cake shops, they make it all year round. You should try Bake Rolls

Yeah.. the best COZONAC is like the home made one (by someone who knows to do cozonac) ..but for the commercial (find it like in supermarkets) cozonac ..the BOROMIR brand is quite good. I usually like it 😁👍 Boromir truly and often makes good stuff (at least taste wise ..they taste good). If you are in some supermarkets from Romania and you see something with the ,,Boromir'' brand ..try it. You gonna often like what they bring. 😉

Thank you Serbian brother. When Steve and Ivanna left Romania last time I missed them a lot and felt a bit jealous that they were gone to Brazil even if they were in the company of Romanians there. When they went to Serbia this year, it was they were home and never missed them for a moment. I don't know much about other Romanians, but I love Serbia and Serbian people with all my heart. May our good relations hold against all odds in the future as they held in the past.
