I am an architect, and the first thing I learned in university is that regular paper cutters are the best sharpeners for all kinds of pencils (given you don't mind putting the shavings in a dustbin afterward). The blades are also easy to break into sections to have a sharper edge or simply to replace the entire blade if needed.

Paper cutters with easy to break sections? Ah, you mean boxcutters. They'll do the job, but you waste a lot more lead. I'm a graphic designer, 'classically schooled', from before computers were the default tool for everything. Even 30 years ago we used mechanical pencils. Not sure why you'd use wooden pencils any more, but to each their own. Romantic reasons maybe?

Fun fact: sure the sharpener might be the thing breaking your pencils, but more likely is that when you drop it, the actual lead breaks on the inside, so it might actually be you the one who is breaking pencils unintentionally

The KUM masterpiece is a must-have for graphite artists and painters. Classical technique tells us to hold the pencil like a lollipop, with the shaft under your palm, not over the crook of your thumb. We're taught to sharpen a long point by exposing an inch or more of the graphite by shaving with a razor blade, then sanding it to a taper. With the Masterpiece, you can expose as much graphite as you like with a simple twist, and no fear of a cut with a dirty razor blade. I myself have made sharpeners like this by cutting off part of the blade, but this one from KUM looks so much more professional and probably cuts more consistently. Will buy!

5:00 My cousin sister once gifted me this sharpener when i was in smaller grade but it had a piggy design instead of this yellow.. I'm telling ya, having this sharpener is really great for people who wants to sharp a lot of pencils, and is lazy to throw the shades away.. Also, when the pencil is sharpened the right way and not too over sharpened, it stops in its way.. The only con about this masterpiece is that it's big.. so it can't be fit inside your regular pencil boxes or pouches.. Overall an amazing product.. It still works now even after more than 7 years..

Warning you ahead of time: I have 2 plastic based KUM two-step automatic pencil sharpeners fail on me from blick (ONE FROM BLACK WING AS WELL). The issue is with the plastic mold tha holds the blades. Due to Germany's energy crisis KUM uses plastic that melts at low temperatures. Thus with medium usage, the plastic the will begin to mold with the pencils preventing the blades from shaving the wood.
@pauljs75
@pauljs75 2 жыл бұрын
Mine seems to be different. It has a metal block insert molded into the plastic, and the blades attach to that with screws. The only issue is that the plastic casing isn't all that great at containing the shavings as it's too small. Also the flex joint for the clear lid will break at some point over the years. Taping it back on works, but it's kind of meh. The two step sharpening does work great (worth the price in that regard - if not marked up), it's just the enclosure has more style than substance to it's design. Even if it's visually unique and fits the hand well, it has to be emptied after sharpening only one or two pencils which makes it impractical. The bare metal block version (also shown in the video) makes much more sense as it omits the nearly useless outer case. Also not saying you're wrong about the design of the plastic case one. It could be they've gotten cheaper over the years and quality crapped out, as mine was purchased some years ago.

I'm surprised that none of them used subscription system, where if you stopped paying the monthly $3 subscription, the thing just stopped working. And no Wi-fi connection for the company to track your pencil-sharpening activities which would also connect to a phone app which gives you tips on how to perform better pencil-sharpening... which for some reason asked for permission to access your contacts, files, camera, microphone, and permission to reset your phone to factory settings.

The Kum two step sharpener is my favourite out of the one you showed, but I also have a few of the T'gaal multisharpeners. However my favouriite sharpener is the M + R three holed one.

There is a second step with a thing called a pencil grinder to get that point extra fine. Used to be used by draftsmen.

I have the blue KUM one and love it, but also there's another long point sharpener from Blackwing that's a hexagonal design with the opening on top and that one is so good!

I just bought a new pencil sharpener a few weeks ago and when I saw this title I thought "let me see why that was a waste of money". Lucky for me I bought the first one you showed. =)

Most desk sharpeners are a lot smaller than the one you showed. What makes them special is their worm blade that lasts a lot longer than regular blades.

Its pretty common for woodworkers to use planes to sharpen pencils, however they generally don't move the plane relative to the pencil, but keep the plane still, which is much easier and is similar to a real planing technique for shaping really small parts. Which i think would be a better design for this pencil sharpener and perhaps how its intended to be used. Generally in woodworking you keep either the workpiece or the plane still, its really hard to plane when neither are stationary. If you were to use this sharpener i would recommend holding the pencil firm with your nondominant hand at the edge of the table at like a 30º angle and sharpen from there. This is similar to the technique that Japanese woodworkers use when sawing wood with the grain without a vise. The Plane sharpener bares a striking resemblance to a real type of hand plane used by Luthiers (People who make Guitars and Violins). Luthiers use these small planes more as carving tools than jointery and flattening tools like most planes. Luthier planes can be held in your palm like this sharpener, while almost all other planes are held with two hands.

Can you put the Blackwing sharpener blade side up on the holder and just work the pencil on it?

My pencil sharpener is rechargable, and it does the entire sharpening for you, you just stick the pencil in, it grips it for you, and it pops back out when it's sharp, and it has multiple sharpness settings. it's Deli brand but I assume there's many more like it. it's huge but perfect for ultra long writing sessions where sharpening might get tiring, or if you have dexterity issues with sharpening. I use a ratcheting one for portability though.

I want someone to invent a sharpener with all the best features - made of metal, ratchets, has adjustable point angles, ergonomic shape, a leather or metal case for storing the sharpener + extra blades + small screwdriver (for changing blades), and uses razor blades (so no need to keep special blades on hand just for a pencil sharpener). It would last generations!

Once I found a couple types of mechanical pencils with tips that aren't designed to break I never looked back at pencils. The few times I do use pencils I just sharpen them with an x-acto knife. These sharpeners do look cool tho!
