this is a great video. and adding the extra battery or even replacing the existing one with your recommendation definitely increases the utility of the bike. the range was too short with the manufacturer's battery. it would be very helpful if you included in your presentation a DIAGRAMMATIC of the WIRING scheme. thanks again for this video. well done.

I did this mod! So, I have replaced the inside battery with the eBay battery (10000mAh), plus I bought a second identical battery for the extended range. I finished the wires coming out of the frame case with a flexible wire cover, and I put the second battery inside my rack bag. Looks very clean! I chose not to use a switch because I can make the connections easily inside the rack bag, and I have the option of not using it or using an even bigger 36v 14000mAh battery inside the bag. Hi I am a compleate computer moron, and lack confidence in the use of my hands and mind ever sense I suffered a coma in 2016... but watching your very step by step instructions on everything I've needed to work on like adjusting breaks, in installed front shocks, seat, with a shock in the post, even changing a rear tire tube... BUT YOUR VIDEOS MADE IT EASY even though I usually screwed up once or twice you are there to remind me of the steps.. Now here's what I asked you wrote you about I bought a Jetson boat Pro refurbished that has some issues with it Judson elected to send me my money back and I interned bought another refurbished bike and here's the wonderful part they don't want the old bike back! So now I have spare tires with the rims and motor hub spare chains for sprockets basically spare everything except for the few parts that went screw you on the bike which were nearly just a great coils and accelerator switch. now what I want to do when I get my new bike I want to put the battery for my existing bike on the back rack and I'd like to know if you can kind of send me a video on how to do that I know there's any connections nessary for a set up ,,,for instance, I ride until my main batter is on 1 dot power, turn off bike, connect power and controller to external batter and I off for more. You have a easy going mannerism that make it easy to learn, and learning removes fear Chuck Cherrito

@@DexterShawn It is mainly the cost vs. benefits. The 14AH was over $150 when I purchased mine. The range increase with 10AH is enough for me to get around. But, you are correct, you can technically do any AH.

might be a better idea to just add a key switch on the power rather than the on off switch it comes with. Can add it to the original case that way your son can just turn the key switch off to avoid discharge. Removing the battery would be a lot of work and more of a headache.

I think it would be fun to use your original type of wiring, where you can switch from one battery to the other. Place one battery in the back rack, one in the bike, and one in a handlebar bag, which can be switched to the back rack. As I said interested in the controller capability experience, and how far you can travel on two batteries, i.e. throttle only and pedal assist with the standard crank. Thanks.

I don't think it will affect my controller given it is still a 36V battery, so no increase in power. It is still in the box, but I plan to open it up this weekend, charge the battery, and assemble. I am very much looking forward to adding all of the accessories that you recommended, and wiring in a 2nd battery on a rear rack. Thank you for all of your guidance and recommendation. We have miles and miles of paved bike paths in our area, and access to the inter-connected bike paths is within a mile of our home, and I hope to ride, partially pedal, and get some exercise.

I had my eye on this very project. I am going to wait until you do a thorough review of the after market battery. I am going to try and incorporate an on-off-on switch for swapping batteries. I am researching the amperage and voltage requirements of the switch to prevent arcing. Hi Russ, technically yes, you can run those in parallel. However, the voltage when fully charge on these batteries are not exactly the same. One of them reads 41V (Jetson) and the Ebay battery reads 42.5V. That makes me nervous about one battery trying to balance the other one, at least in my case. I did everything exact to video! Worked great. I noticed the first cycle of the eBay batteries only lasted me 9.5 miles on mostly all electric. I assume the batteries got a break in period? Also the motor seemed to lose power after full throttling it for that time. For reference I weigh 200 lbs. I assume the motor is simply being over worked and is cutting power due to heat.

@@porschegt2346 I am glad it worked well for you. 9.5 miles seem a little low. The motor shouldn't be overworked that quickly. Were you riding on a flat surface or was it hills? The wind also affects range often time. The ebay battery gives me at least 15 miles in the summer and I weight 185 lbs.

Hi Damon, as responded by Nolacross70 below, this controller cannot handle the increase in voltage. You would essentially double the voltage by connecting those batteries in series. You could need a controller upgrade and motor might not even handle that much power. Thanks for watching my video.

I would get 4 cables to be extra sure. Potentially two from the controller to outside, one from existing battery and another one from new battery. You might be okay with 3 but since those come in pack of 2, I would get 2 packs (4 total). Hope this helps and I hope your upgrade goes well. Thanks!

Hello, thanks for watching my video. Technically you can but the voltage between those batteries might not be the same and that is a problem. Ideally you want the voltage to be less than 0.5V difference for parallels system to work. In my case I am reading more than 1 volt difference between the batteries at full charge. If the voltages were the same, you can charge both batteries using one charging plug (since those two batteries become one large capacity battery and the second battery can charge through the power connection). I am working on putting together a video where I connect the batteries using a switch instead, so I can just flip the switch between batteries when one dies.

Hello, it could be caused by many things. It could be the battery itself, controller, loose wire etc. I would recommend you contact the bike manufacturer. They might have seen similar issues in the past. Thank you.

What I fail to understand is at 8:53 The controller has only one input, so only 1 battery can be connected. How you made 2 inputs through the extension cable ?

Hello, it is still one input. You have to unplug one and plug the other one in after the first one dies. However, that extension allows you to do that outside of the controller housing so you don't really have to do anything. Couldn't you connect the controller to a switch that connects to both batteries and flip the switch instead of unplugging every time? It would also solve the issue of the second battery port being exposed when not in use.

Hello, I would recommend putting a larger single external battery instead of two. You can go 14 or 20AH battery as long as it is a 36V.

Hi Frank, I could be wrong but I don't think you can add 5 speed chain given there isn't really 5 speed gears in this ebike. If you want to upgrade the chainring and crank to prevent spinning out at high speed, something like this might work: ebay.us/NEcNbN. Hello, I have ridden this bike on a gravel road for short periods but wouldn't recommend it too much. Any bike can damage faster if you constantly ride on gravel/dirt roads. You should be fine for a short period of time and make sure to clean the bike afterwards. The speed will vary based on the topography, wind and weight. You should be able to get anywhere from 11-15 miles. You can go a little bit faster if you pedal rapidly but due to the size of the crankset and speed limiter on the controller, you are really limited on how fast you can go. Yes, you can pedal just like a bicycle. If you leave the power on, it is essentially helping you make pedaling easier, so the battery will die after 25-30 miles and will become harder to pedal. If you turn the power off, you won't get any battery support and it becomes just like any other bike but a bit harder to pedal since you are working against the motor. Thanks for watching my video!

Hello, the battery that I showed in my video currently costs around $100 but that battery I heard is out of stock. The manufacturer will bring it back in a little while. There are similar batteries in ebay you can check out. Some of my subscribers had some issues with the battery and they were able to get a refund from the seller. Hi Shiva. I have watched your informative videos on the subject and read hundreds of comments and replies but could not find anything about the "charging cable from the controller". Maybe I missed this question and answer? I'm just wondering, do you know if there is any advantage to connecting the charging cable from the control box to the extra battery when switching and being able to use any charge from the motor to the battery when driving the e-scooter and braking? Hi Jay, thanks for watching my video. Yes, technically you can but I wouldn't recommend it. If you connect the batteries in parallel, you will have to always make sure both batteries are at the same state of charge. If not, one of the battery will end up charging the other battery and you will lose range. Instead of doing that, I have ordered a switch that can act as a transfer switch between batteries for easier battery swapping. I will be making a video if I get that switch to work.

@@jaymbhalodia Hi Jay, sorry I didn't elaborate. I meant when you first connect them together in parallel or if you ever have to disconnect them and connect back. You will always have to make sure their voltages are the same and if you accidently connect them with different voltages, one of the battery will rush to charge the other one to balance charge and that is not good. Probably just my own personal preference, so you can totally connect yours in parallel. Another thing I am not sure about is charging time. If you don't have a powerful charger, it could take a really long time and if you take apart to charge them independently, you will have to make sure they are both full or at the same voltage level. Finally, I am not totally sure the type or quality of overcharge protection system in these batteries. Since you will be charging one of these batteries through its discharge ports instead of charge port and if the overcharge protection doesn't activate on the discharge port, that could also not be good for your battery. Again, these could just be my personal preferences :) Thanks for watching and for your questions.
