Hose-sizes are determined by its INSIDE-diameter ("I.D.") NOT its outside-diameter ("O.D.")
1/4-inch = 0.25" I.D.
3/8-inch = 0.38" I.D.
1/2-inch = 0.50" I.D.
5/8-inch = 0.63" I.D.

Does 5/16” hose is enough for 4gpm 4000psi machine or I need 3/8” pressure hose?

4gpm typically cant pull 3/8" hose much more that 100 feet unless conditions are perfect and the Nozzle is really built for thrust. I recommend 5/16"(.31") or 1/4"(.25") for 4gpm, depending on the jetter's PSI rating and the pipe-size to be cleaned :)

@@JETTERSnorthwest Im using this machine to surface clean flat surfaces and im getting so much vibrations on hoses that im considering going to 3/8 hoses. Im using 5/16 right now lenght usually 100-160ft and I feel like my pump is stopped by this thin hose. Am I right or stepping up to 3/8 hoses dont do much about this fact and I should stay with 5/16?

Flexible is typically best, but sometimes it depends on the pipe-size; if you are primarily jetting 3" and smaller then flexibility is very helpful to get thru turns in the line; but if primarily jetting 4" and larger then a stiff hose holds center better in larger lines

can you use a 1/4 hose on a 4inch sewer drain that has grease in it?

So sorry we missed your comment!! Yes many contractors use 1/4" jet-hose in grease-laden 4-inch pipe, but if your jetter does 5-GPM or more you will get much better cleaning results from a larger Jet-Hose and larger nozzle that is set for your jetter's GPM/PSI rating
