I think that's a big problem with a lot of creators that are having trouble growing. Like you said, "Spinning your wheels, and wasting your time". People automatically assume that an audience will be hooked onto whatever they make, when in reality, they lack an exciting story behind what they're vlogging about.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for making such this deep detailed video. I've been struggling recently with why my content didn't seem interesting and why I haven't been able to capture and maintain an audience. But it would seem that one of the the first points you make: Giving a backstory and some history; this is exactly what I've been missing. Like you said, I can't just hit record, thank you so much for your help 🙏❤

Love your special guest at 1:01:27, teach them to edit while they're young! Just watched the whole video, it was inspiring! I'm a retired wedding editor, just riding around the country side with my dog trying to give my grandkids something to remember us by. I really enjoyed your vlog, it refreshed my memory of what's really important, and that's content. I'm old school, which explains my long edits, but I keep current with Final Cut, and it gives me something to do with my time. I've been struggling with telling the story, mainly because I don't spend the planning stages like you mentioned up front. I kind of get out there and hit record and see what I have to work with at the end of the day. Well, that's going to change thanks to your tutorial. I appreciate it!

The story is KING. The footage, the camera angles (POV), the elements (surroundings) around the Vlog, the persona of the character/creator it’s all revolving around the story.. I'm very grateful that I got to this point as if I think about it, that's 50 people who are interested in my content! I know it might now sound like much but I'm very happy that even a few people are willing to come back and watch my vlogs. Thank you so much. You are an excellent teacher. I was bummed that the finished product wasn't at the end but I found it. We share the same mindset as to searching out adventure. I've been doing that for the last 7 years now that I've found the perfect mate... or did she find me? Butler Peak reminds me of our trip to Saddle Back Lookout above Downieville last year. I planned to get there before sunset to have dinner and enjoy the view. Ran into the same locked gate that you had but we were almost at the top. Set up the grill for the pork tenderloin, chairs and the USB bistro's. Marvelous time! Zero light pollution which means it got really dark :( Packed up, headed back and got lost. The JK has stock headlights. We did eventually find HWY 49 and I thought we were west of town. Nope, we were east. 30 minute dirt road trip turned into 90 minutes. Should have activated the Garmin. I am just starting out on the video side so we'll have to go back and capture it. Thank you again for all your effort. You have really opened my eyes.

So I used to think that if a video is anything over 10 minutes, the creator is just using up the time for ads and create more watch-time hours. But now watching videos like this, I realized that if I can spend an hour watching Netflix, I should spend that time on a video like this instead. Just the shear amount of quality and tips this video has, is REMARKABLE. thank you brother. Definitely gonna watch more of your videos. New subscriber right here !!!

Thank you for this video. I just watched it and took notes. Personally I teach hospitality management at the University of Arkansas. The pandemic pushed us to online instruction. I took that as an opportunity to take my students virtually to some wonderful hotels, restaurants, bars, etc. (that are open) all across the country. I've been struggling with engagement and creating content that is 'where my students are'. That is, in a form they are comfortable with. To me, that means lessons and lectures should be a series of stories told through video. As the world opens up, I am scheduling trips to destinations, resorts, festivals, etc. to illustrate (video) concepts and examples. So... again, thank you. This information is helping me with my content creation.

As someone who makes very structured, scripted and planned (and technical) videos, the idea of a Vlog has always scared me, but it's been the one thing that I really really want to do - but when I actually go to do it, I feel totally stupid. This video hands down has de-mystified the whole process. Thank you so much for the video Jeven. I've was watching your videos at least two years before I started my channel. This came into my feed at the right moment. I need to push myself to the next level and I think Vlogs or Vlog style could be the thing to do it. Thank. You.

I just finished the biggest video so far with my my Kawasaki Versys X300 being the topic and how and why to add accessories and modifications to the bike. This video was exceptional. I've been looking for ways to tell a story in my videos for a long time. Yes, many videos out there talk about story-telling, but I did not know how to apply it to my own somewhat spontaneous content: hiking, backpacking, and the like. Until now, I just filmed along the way and strung the shots together to "craft" a story, but doing the research and planning never really came to my mind. This will truly make a difference in my future videos. I wonder how to create a story if all you have is different footage without planning ahead of time or what happens if you plan a hike to a location, but then something extraordinary happens along the way, and THAT becomes your climax in the video. All of it really just takes practice. Thanks again for your detailed videos. They truly help me become a better filmmaker myself. I'm working through your storytelling playlist right now.

This is so meta it's insane. And it's awesome. The story of the story, using all the elements of the example story in the story of its own video. Crazy

It's been a while since I had in mind to open a youtube channel to tell how I take my pictures (night photography) but I couldn't find the way to make sense of what I have in my head . . until today I discovered this video. In spite of my fight with the English (I am from Spain) you have opened my mind and shown me the way to move forward. You can't even imagine how grateful I am to you for this. An hour of knowledge and learning beyond what could be a "click" tutorial on the camera or computer. I don't usually make such long comments but I really want to show you my gratitude

Really appreciate you and your knowledgeable and easy-to-follow style. So many YT content creators are just way to hyper for me and to be honest, come across as that kid who is overly desperate to be "liked" or just plain narcissistic which immediately puts me off. That overly kinetic, rather ADD approach to educational tutorials also lends to missing the details and as storytellers we know that the devil is in the details, so thank you! I will absolutely check out your editing class and look forward to making my way through the rest of your content and keeping up with your visual storytelling journey. Cheers, Cat 😸

This was super helpful - best tutorial video I've ever watched on KZbin (and the first one I've seen on the importance of planning the story first). I like how you used the storytelling techniques you talk about in your actual tutorial video. Thanks!

This is the best video I’ve watched on how to improve YouTubing! I’m in the exact situation you described in the beginning - been doing this for a while but still haven’t got any traction. This is just the tutorial I need. The workshop form rather than mini tutorials is really helpful to let the message sink in and fundamentally change how to approach content creation. My take away is the mindset as well as the technical details. Bravo! Really really appreciate the video!

This video is really helping me.. I thought all I needed to do was to point and shoot.. I thought I was imitating my favorite youtuber... but.. After having 500 GB of disjointed content.. and hearing many of the gurus say... you dont need beter gear.. you need to learn how to tell a compelling story.. I searched and found this video.. I dont know what to say.. but I have a clear view.. of.. how to start .. putting first things first.. with the elements of story telling...thx

Thanks mate, genuinely mean that. I'm part way through and will watch the rest this week. I always get something very useful and practical from your vids for me to go away and mull over when I'm planning my next vid. So thank you, I had a simple aim of watching my first vid back one year after and compare it to my latest to see the profession. With Covid, I'm letting myself have 3 extra months so I'm really going to try put a lot of your advice together so that come September and can watch my 1st and last vid back to back and hopefully be proud of how far I have come. For me it's all about self worth and growth (cheesy, I know). All the best from the UK. 👍

MAKING A TEMPLATE PROJECT!!! Why have I not done this yet????!?!?! ha ha!!! I am so dumb - great pro tip. And dude, the way you broke down story. I mean, I loved it!! So many people go on and on about story is king, but you've actually told us how to achieve it - RESPECT!! THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is my fav video of yours and I'm sure I'll revisit it. Also, a video on how to do reviews in a fun and interesting way would be helpful like you mentioned -so if you got the time to make it, I'd watch it :) Thanks Jeven!

I want to show that "A Senior Moment" can be like life at any age. It can be good, yes with challenges like any other time, but it can be full of what you want it to be. I want to share my real life, with all that it is. Fortunately it is mostly good.

Jeven, I'm doing videos about taking the best bird photographs and now I'm going to move away from the tutorials and the expensive gear. My channel is going to be my story and not these other guys that shoot pristine bird photos using mirrorless. I want to tell the story of how I've done it using an EOS-6D and Sigma 600mm (inexpensive) lens. Your channel is top-notch and you've become my video-producing mentor.

Awesome. Here's an idea for some content on your channel. A series of videos can have a goal of getting a specific shot and you're telling the story of what it takes to get that. The payoff is whether you got the photo or not you didn't and what your biggest takeaway from that experience is.
