Fuck yeah! Nice to come home to this after a long day in the factory!

Nice! Really dig the handle design. They match the machine well.

Can't wait to see this lathe finished in 5 years when you finally stop rebuilding parts on it.

It looks great. When I get a chance I will watch the other parts in this series. Its almost like a metal version of a wood workers lathe.

The D shape of the handle is inspired. Looking good. I want to do a CNC lathe too, but I think your at work machining possibilities are gonna leave me in the dust.
@TabletopMachineShop5 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends on what you have access to, but this machine so far used no CNC, and I think for a CNC retrofit of this machine, I'd also try to use manual machines to keep the barrier to entry low.

Could the handle for the tool post also be the pin? Would make for quick tool swaps, especially if it's held in by some clip or snap solution

Been watching this lathe slowly come together and I'd like to build something similar, except with 5c collets. Do you think I could use the collet itself as a spindle, along with some tapered roller bearings? Also -- any books you recommend that go into machine tool design?
@TabletopMachineShop5 жыл бұрын
So the CNC lathe that I keep saying i'm working on actually will use 5C collets. The plan is to use the spindle out of one of those cheap spindexers (with some modifications) until I work up the nerve to machine, harden and grind my own tapers haha. There aren't a lot of books on machine tool design specifically (though there are some), but I like Shigley's "Mechanical Engineering Design" for fundamentals. If you really want to get deep into machine design specifically, look up Hale's "Principles and Techniques for Designing Precision Machines". It gets pretty serious pretty quickly though :P

For the tool post pin to fasten it steady, couldn’t you make the “hold down” design something like how tailstock locks are, to keep the tailstock from going in or out? Like in your tool post holder use to ball bearing(s), both out diameter to fit inside where the pin goes into, only the two bearings have a though hole, one of them with threads to slide the pin through the first bearing, then screw into the thread through hole of the second bearing, essentially making the bearing clamp onto the inner post, whenever necessary to do so? Just a thought.

I was having difficulties with tool bit positioning if I was going to fasten it down the center line -- I'd have to offset the tool in front of or behind the hold down device and that would complicate accurate radius turning. I do like your idea though -- I'd probably try to do it with some kind of thrust roller bearing to reduce the risk of damaging ball bearings, or better yet even a bushing.

I actually have a J0 chuck kicking around somewhere... the taper to hold it is so small though, I don't know if I could cut a through hole in it and still have it be strong enough :|
@TheMetalButcher5 жыл бұрын
Wait, why do you need a hole through it again? We are both talking about the tailstock, right?

What about collets for work holding?
@TabletopMachineShop5 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's possible--maybe I can modify a straight shank collet holder to use as a shaft
