Jewell Loyd. 2x WNBA Champion. 2x WNBA All-Star. 2016 All-WNBA Second Team. 2015 WNBA Rookie of the Year. 2x Senior USA Basketball Gold Medalist (2018 Basketball World Cup in Spain & 2014 World Championships in Moscow). In the Wubble, she was the second leading scorer on a Seattle Storm team that went UNDEFEATED in the playoffs (only the second team in WNBA history).
She went from averaging 15.5 points per game on 44.3/39.0/87.5 shooting splits in the regular season to 18.0 points on 47.1/39.3/93.3 splits IN THE PLAYOFFS. She’s got just about everything down. The basics shine brightest in her game. Her footwork is phenomenal. She uses her pump fake to punish undisciplined defenders. Her jab step just kills. She’s outstanding off the ball. Lethal on the catch and shoot.
Not many have the distinction of being named the female face of Kobe Bryant’s sneaker line, but that should tell you everything you need to know about Jewell: she’s special. The man himself gave her the nickname “Gold Mamba.”
There were 2 players that attempted to close out their respective Finals wearing the Mamba Golds. Only ONE of them actually did. Anthony Davis TRIED to close the Miami Heat out with the Black Mamba jerseys AND the gold kicks. It was Jewell Loyd, however, rocking the same number on her back as Bryant did in his latter years, was the only one who got it done.
Here’s a quote from Kobe from 2016/17, after he personally worked with Loyd for four days of sessions (before he really started doing that with players):
“When I watched her play, certain things can stand out,” Bryant told The Summitt. “Like I can tell if a player is really serious about the game or if they’re just bs’ing. If you’re bs’ing I’m not going to give you the time of day. If you’re really committed to the process, really committed to working, perfecting your craft, then I can pick up on that pretty quick.”
highposthoops....
And of course, Jewell said in her postgame interview after putting away the Las Vegas Aces in 3 games: "It's the gold shoes, knowing that I'm unique. I'm special," Loyd said. "I wore the shoes because of Kobe. His jersey number is everything. He's the first person to ever believe in me before I got into the league. It's special."
