Just the video I was looking for! I work as an engineer but have been wanting to start my own indoor farming business. I have been growing mushrooms as a hobby for about 10 years now. In about 45 mins (had to keep pausing to take notes) you have given me everything I need to start work on a solid business plan. I appreciate it. It is amazing you have gotten as far as you have with production in only about 4 months. I hope to see more videos about the business side of your farm in the future. No one is making videos like that and you seem to have a real understanding of finance. Good luck with everything.

Hi, I’m in the UK and I’ve been considering growing mushrooms as a business for a while. I’ve bought my first tent today and I’m watching all the videos I can (some for the second time) to get an idea how to start. I’m hoping to start as a hobby at first to get an idea of what I’m doing and then hopefully scale it up when I get better at it. Thanks for the videos.

Great overview of your startup costs Jewel, your CPA background is definitely a strength. You may have covered this in another video but... Before spending a dime for a commercial operation I recommend conducting a local market survey, check the local supermarkets (even Walmart sometimes has a local produce section) Visit some of the restaurants and order the dishes with mushrooms, peruse the local Farmers Markets to make sure there is potential to sell your products (at the grocery stores you can pretty much figure wholesale is half or less of your retail pricing.) Be creative in developing your niche market. I add that because at one time I raised free range chickens and other premium meat birds (labresse clones) but couldn't sell enough on a consistent basis to be sustainable because my costs were too high for the market. No one wants to work their ass off for $5 an hour if you're even lucky enough to make anything in the first year or two. On a positive note, I did get to eat premium chicken and give them to friends so the sunk costs were not too unbearable.

If you need a laminar flow hood, check out auctions at your local university that have a large science college. I just bought one at Virginia Tech for $190. It is three feet wide and almost three feet high. New it was over $8,000, a great deal. You should be able to see the list of things for sale online, you don't have to go to the auction to find out if they even have one available. I'm curious why Jewell said her laminar flow hood was completely unnecessary?

@@JewellsGardens I'm trying to get my girlfriend into this because I'm very sick and I may not be around a heck of a lot longer. So I started small scale I have one big rolling rack full of blocks and they're growing nice I just ordered a tent and a humidifier unfortunately I could only get the 8 by 8 tent it's all I could afford for her and I've learned all of the lab work etc I actually come from laboratory work so that was easy part working with agar I've built up a catalog of of species and refine them all into single strain fast-growing cultures. My state did I live in and I'm not going to say it out loud has only one supplier in the entire state and no suppliers on the side of the state that I'm on. My girlfriend works an hour away we're both getting older she's not going to be able to afford this by yourself unless she does something so I'm really trying to get her interested in it I am disabled I can barely do anything but I've managed to at least bring this up to a light hobby level and I've learned it inside and out. the next thing I'm going to buy her is a sterilizer and if I can't get her excited about it by then I guess I'm going to give up and then just grow mushrooms for the table but at least I can say I've tried. You've been a hell of an inspiration for me by the way I thought you were about 25 years old LOL you look very young. Anyway thank you for your videos this is a great help to people

Oh, man. What a great video Jewell. I've never watched your content before this video, but that's probably due to me being in the same position you were in when you started (a noob). There's so many mixed methodologies for not only growing in general, but growing medium, mushroom species, fruiting conditions (air flow, temp., symbiosis, humidity, light exposure), cultivating, sterilizing, etc.... It all seems SO daunting to me (I'm still going for it), but I have a ton of farmers markets in the area, as well as nice restaurants that might be demanding these shrooms. Currently I'm growing all my logs inside of a Vivosun 5x5 grow tent (12 logs) but that's all I have. I don't have an inline set up just a hepa filter inside circulating air and a humidifier to keep it as humid as possible in there. I also have a grow light in there and turn it on periodically. (I don't know how much light they need inside with the mylar and don't wanna cook them prematurely) :D Anyhow, I would love to be mentored and I know your time is valuable but if I could be pointed in the right direction, or maybe I'm going in the correct direction but I plan to learn by trial and error supplemented by the book you first mentioned and youtube, as well as forums. I'm done working for the man too! I'm 26 and work as a cyber security analyst for the DoD, and man I just wanna farm! I live in a 1700sqft townhome, 3 level with two balconies and a 2 car garage (where the grow tent{s}) are/will be located. I have a lot to learn. Thanks for your time as well as reading and I hope to hear from you! Have a good day and I'm happy everything is going well with your business.

Chuck Taylor So I’m going to make a video on marketing/getting business & will go in detail with co-ops but they’re for the most part basically online “farmers markets”. A bunch of farmers are in it & chefs can buy from it from various farmers. One stop shop for chefs, one bill for them, one delivery for them from multiple growers. Easy peasy! The boxes are legit, I Freaking LOVE them & I scoured the internet & couldn’t find anything until I got hooked up with Earth Angel- we have a die cut specifically for mushroom packing. They’re $1 a box, 1000 minimum plus ship (ship wasn’t that bad on these). Shoot me an email if you’re interested, it’s in the info above!

Thanks for the information, It was a little difficult to understand each word; the audio was a little echoed. It must be difficult to always and only get #1 mushrooms. What do you do with the ones that are not perfect? Food for the goats, mycoremediation, medical tinctures, powders, dried, soups, so many possibilities. Or do the chefs just take what you present to them? What's the shelf-life pf your mushrooms? do you use refrigeration? Good videos.
@JewellsGardens6 жыл бұрын
Great questions, you know I should post a video (where you can hear me better) on some of the questions asked since there were quite a few. Anyhow, most come out good but not all (you drop them & they crack or you wait to long to harvest trying to get extra weight then they flatten out too much or they get too old). Anyway I just started selling them to my chefs! I normally charge $10/lb & I asked how much they pay for cheap button mushrooms & they said about $16 for 3 pounds so I've been selling them $5 a pound. Works great. Shelf life varies- shiitake are the longest. I was selling shiitake that looked pretty decent 4 dang weeks after they fruited!!! These were T.R.'s blocks. They were prime the first 10 days but they were still good after. King are next, then blues 5 days to a week looking real good, golden, chestnut & lions mane less. I use a walk in cooler which I'll show coming up too.

Thanks for another valuable video. I'm curious about your electric bill for the mushroom business, including the walk-in cooler. Is there a way you could give us a guesstimate, or is it too tied in with your home and other farming ventures to separate out?
@JewellsGardens6 жыл бұрын
Oh that's a really tough one for many reasons. Ok so the walk in cooler is on my homes electric bill but honestly it shouldn't add that much because remember it's just a small window unit powering it (via the Coolbot), not a traditional walk in. It's 40% less energy. For the cabin, now that's another story. My bill was $381 in December & $300 for January. 2 things though, first I'm in Maryland & it was very cold for most of the last 2 months. The other thing though is that I have ZERO insulation in the cabin, it's legitimate log ceilings and everything so heat and air just escape everywhere. I'm on a mini split system that can't keep up so I use space heaters when needed which kill the electric too.

Jewell I really love your videos, they are very informative. I like that you break things down so you can see what it takes to do a grow from top to bottom. I love that you share your successes and failure as well!! It makes it truly a learning channel. I had two questions for you. The first is, do you need an special licenses to farm and sell produce? I know from state to state it may be different. My impression is that you have to register your business (standard) and pay a fee. You may need a vendor license to sell at farmers markets. Past that is there anything special you need to do? Like do you get inspected by anyone etc? Second, question. I notice that you pin and fruit in the same room (tent). Which mushrooms is that ok for? I notice for example, TR at Earth Angel takes his King trumpets out and opens and starts them pinning outside his fruiting room . Then he takes them into the fruiting room (cooler). Do you do anything similar? I would love a video on how you organize your movement from colonization to pinning to fruiting and how you do each species of mushrooms and what they like. Thanks!!
@JewellsGardens6 жыл бұрын
Stacy Reid Heyyy! So your first question you got all the answers- register your business, get a farmers market liability policy (usually $1mm coverage...mine was $275). No inspection although if you’re “preparing” food like cooking them that a whole other thing. As for fruiting- generally you don’t want blocks pinning in the incubation room. A few exceptions- lions mane (pinning in the bag is your clue to them being ready for the grow). Kings are also good to let start pinning a little outside the grow and I’ve done both. The grow is cooler (and needs to be) so it will just take a little longer to pin in there. TR taught me how to grow my kings:)

Jewell, Does your state require an "inspection" of some sort of your production facility (I see you moved into the warehouse, congrats!) as you are producing food for the general public? Thanks for the video, I have a question about your experience with lions mane, I saw your video and left a comment there, I ll ask again here. I purchased a lions mane patch from fungi perfectI the assistance and guidance was not good enough for me. Any way I brought a patch for the first time to see how I would like growing mushrooms, my experience was not that good but I’m not sure if I did exactly what I was supposed to do but I did excite what I was told. The patch instructions I was given was to use a plastic bag which they sent with the patch create a tent for the patch and spray the patch and tent 3 to 4 times a day. Well I got one yield from the patch it’s been 18 days or so and no other pin or fruit is showing up. The yield that I got did not have ice sickles unfortunately a few Corel’s showed up. I posed this dilemma to fungi perfectI and I have yet to receive a response on the reason that I only got one yield out of the patch. They explained the lack of ice sickles by say when you grow in doors sickles may not form. I would not mind taken on this venture I would like to move a little slower then you but congratulation on your progress. I Run a training operation and would like to add some business diversity, FYI my web site is assistedlivingstafftrainong.com. I would like to try another patch or two but I don’t want to use fungi perfectIs product for this next attempt. Any feed back would be appreciated.

So Fungi Perfecti would definitely have your answers- I've never bought a patch so I have no idea how they come. There are different strains of LM so some will have teeth and some won't. Mine don't have long teeth. I'm not sure why there wasn't a second flush but it could have been from not enough air or humidity I would guess. Good luck!

Is it worth it to incorporate / register as a business and get all credit cards / expense accounts in that business name before making purchases or is it fine having everything in your personal name for a while, just keeping things separate (as is inferred with AmEx comments)? The end goal is to eventually have a business and it seems like just getting it done, now, and out-of-the-way would be the way to go if I'm already expecting a delay of ~3 months before buying stuff. Also, I have some oddly specific questions regarding incorporating and all that jazz... Do you have much familiarity with that? What are your rates for consultation? $50-100/3 emails? Take PayPal? I decided to build myself a gardening app. An app for clueless people to reference and using ai images to help recognize plants, pests. I mentioned it to rustic gardens Then I realized old textbooks are not is good as present expertise Individuals like you should have one. I suspect you already have people who could do so for you. I still have to work a lot but I will build my prototype and send it to you. See what you think 🤔

Depending on how much you use Amazon, have you considered Amazon Prime? Spending $100/yr could potentially save much more in shipping costs.
@JewellsGardens6 жыл бұрын
Oh my goodness, I use the hell out of Prime!!! People like me are going to be the reason they increase the cost from $99 a year to some un-godly cost, lol!!!

Jewell's Funky Fungi Lol! My wife does, too. I’m still in the planning stage for my mushroom business (composition notebook, page tabs, the works), so watching people like you, Eric Myers, and Brian Callow gives me a Huge step in the right direction. You’re absolutely awesome and I’m glad Eric recommended his followers to check your channel out!

Hello Jewell, I'm based in the United Kingdom and looking to start out a small-scale mushroom grow. Could you please respond with your rates for mentoring? I'd prefer if we could have a video chat where I could fire off some questions within a set period of time, so would paying you hourly workout?

So sorry I'm just now responding, I had a lot of comments to read through- I video chat for mentoring through Facebook messenger. Email if you're still interested:) funkyfungimd@gmail.com

Hey I genuinely enjoy keeping up with your channel, jw y u don’t buy a bag of grain but then just inoculate grain2grain and get into storing a culture??? Considering you have most the tools, do you not see the profit vs. loss worth it? Thanks for sharing💋looks like a spore print huh?!?! Logo Maybe???haha and maybe you can pay me to consult, “made with a kiss of love” 😂
@JewellsGardens6 жыл бұрын
JOHNRYAN C. You are so on point and that’s exactly why I hired Katie! I’m so in the weeds from getting so much demand so soon that I haven’t had time for anything except buying spawn for inoculation & not stretching it. I want to start doing grain to grain with my spawn to stretch it a gen or two then start fresh with new spawn every couple of months

how much would you charge for an hour phone call? ive done so much research on mushroom cultivation but i dont know which genetics are the most profitable, or any budgeting tips, etc

Hi Jewell. You are awesome. Did you ever have regrets leaving the corporate world? I'm contemplating making the dive into doing exactly what you are doing. I have been thinking about it for sometime, both microgreens and mushrooms so you are pretty much my mentor from afar. I grew up on a truck farm long ago, with over 2,000 lbs per harvest a day, which was backbreaking so I needed to find some less labor intensive farming that I can enjoy and do on my own. I know you are now employing someone for 6 hrs per week, but did you do everything prior on your own, and did you enjoy it? Thank you.
@JewellsGardens6 жыл бұрын
Heyyy Judy! NO REGRETS. Saying that, it was easier for me because my household doesn't "need" me to contribute to the household income. Once my debt from starting the biz is paid off I certainly will. I know that you can definitely do the microgreens while working if you need to. I do it at 5am now before the kids go to school. You can do mushrooms as well after work to dip the toes and just start very small, maybe with a farmers market so you aren't required to produce a certain amount each week, just whatever you can harvest. Does that help a bit? You can alway go balls to the walls like I did...just get a big Costco can of Tums because you're going to need it with the heartburn & ulcers:)

Tiffany Garres Yes I need to do that! Totally embarrassing though because it’s in a scary garage that is overflowing with who knows what. Yes, it’s filled with blocks & harvested mushrooms in those boxes that are stackable

Thank you for making the time to make this video. My husband and I are retired and are trying to get started growing mushrooms for our own use. Would be neat to someday expand enough to sell some on the side, at least to make enough to buy supplies. We have a spare bedroom where we want to set up a tent and shelves.. I ordered sheet plastic to build our own "tent". Starting out with just enclosing a 2x 3 x 5 metal shelf. Do you think a small fan will work for air circulation or will we need to build a vent in the wall? I see people wearing masks.. Is it dangerous to breathe the spores?.. We have a very tight budget. Our income is considered below the "poverty line" but we manage to have a few hundred a month after expenses since we don't have a mortgage... We try to save $100. a month towards our emergency funds. So we don't have a lot to invest but we do have a ton of time to do our own construction.. 2 months ago I ordered 3 blocks from Fungi Perfecti.. We want to start with oyster and lions mane.. Anyway, This month I ordered 15 burlap sacks for substrate. A bale of straw and a bag of wood pellets. With a a few of the harvested oyster mushrooms, I put in a jar to collect spores. A few days later I packed straw and composted leaves from last fall into a burlap bag, boiled it at 160 - 165 degrees for a couple hours in my 41 quart canner pot (without the lid). I put filtered water in the jar with mushrooms and swished it a bit then poured it over the cooled and drained gunny sack.. then put the sack in a clear plastic bag with holes in it.. Then put that in a 15 gallon aquarium to hold in the humidity. It has a screen lid which I covered 95% of it with plastic. Now I am waiting to see if mycelium will grow on the burlap. I barely know what I am doing. I am anxious to get started with the lions mane but I am waiting till I can get some wheat bran to add to the hardwood pellets. I also need to get the "tent" set up for it first. I ordered plastic and a mister to make my own humidifier. But will probably need to order parts to rig up some kind of ventilation for it as well. I don't know if my husband will agree to putting a hole in the bedroom wall but might be able to do it through the window..

ok... I noticed something interesting about this video... yes I am an overly observant person... I work in the medical field and developed some kinda keen eye... anyway.... at 12:15 Jewell, you raise your arm... in which we see a tattoo of December 15th, 1976 (12/15)... and just after that you mention that you purchased unicorn bags on 12/15..... yeah... I know... I just thought it was really interesting... (not a creeper, just observant) BTW I got about 2 pounds of shiitake off my first micro grow.. so maybe I can do this ... Keep up the great information very helpful!

one last question (for now :) How many hours of labor do you put in each week to produce 100 lbs of mushrooms?
@JewellsGardens6 жыл бұрын
catlinhollow I love your “for now” buhaaaa!!! I did a video on the cooler too not sure if you checked it out?!? You asked for that yes? I would have tagged you but I don’t think I can Do that on KZbin. Anyhow, that’s an awesome question (I feel another video coming). I work a lot. Like a whole lot. It’s broken up though & I farm other things so I’m always switching back & forth. Microgreens at 4:45am-6:30, mushies from 8-12:30 or 1:30 depending the day, then back at it 4-5:30 unless I’m out in the field prepping beds for spring then I go back after dinner. Oh and 3 hours on Saturday and Sunday. You get the idea:)

Jewell's Funky Fungi I did see the walk in! Thanks. I'm watching your videos just as fast as you're putting them up. I've got a 6 week class starting soon with Steve Gabriel from Cornell Extension, then I hope to be up and running, with my first harvest mid-may. I'm really rural, but have some tiny cities within an hour drive, so I hope to be able to sell at least 100 pound a week. *Fingers crossed*. You have been an excellent inspiration to me. It's nice to network with other women farmers, since their aren't that many of us.
