Wait for their prices, just today I got a price to fix a broken ring for 95 pounds, same to fix on just one tiny point a broken pendant and 230 to make a pair of errings from a bracelet (they should have given the hooks), 14k rare in the UK because of it we offered to give gold for fixing to avoid that they use 9k. Also the work would have lasted for weekS. Now I am here hoping to learn....

Really good video to watch, I loved the idea of not mucking around with extra blah, blah, blah. My question was how to solder a gold ring back together and you got straight to the point. Awesome! Thanku, I'm glad I finally found someone that demonstrates your question without all the Fancy Blurb. Your the man to watch! You know your stuff and plenty of people will learn a lot by following your advice. Thanks again much appreciated⛏️ Highly recommend!!!

The alcohol used is denatured alcohol, usually you can pick up at any hardware store. I use an old baby food jar and use about a quarter to a half inch of the powder boric acid (hardware store cockroach and ant killer is boric acid, that is what I use. Check the label but on mine it says 100% boric acid..) And then I fill the jar about 3/4 of the way full of denatured alcohol. I have a hole cut into the lid of the baby food jar and a brush that I use to dab the solution onto the ring.

Thank you so much. Very practical instruction. Subscribed. I just wish after the soldering we would’ve seen a very close-up look of what a proper soldering looks like. Ans after filing too.

Rangga.. I have no experience with online classes, but I can defiantly suggest taking a course. I attended a course in Paola KS, where Mr.Gene Wilson instructs 3 different classes, one for beginners, one for master stone setting and also a class on casting. I would highly recommend doing this over an online course because the instructor is working right there with you and he is right there over your shoulder teaching you things based on what you already know and also is doing it at your pace.

This is an awesome video and I love that I can see everything up close. I've been soldering sterling silver jewelry for a couple years now and wanted to expand into gold. I have a couple questions: 1. How was that little ball of gold solder made? just heated a piece that put it on when the flux began to bubble ? 2. I have boric acid, what is the boric acid: alcohol ratio? Do you use denatured alcohol? 3. what kind of file are you using to file when finishing? THANK YOU SO MUCH !!
@Makermook2 жыл бұрын
I can answer #1: You cut a small square of solder and heat it by itself. When it melts, surface tension draws it into a ball, making it easier to pick up with the soldering pick. A sphere is also less likely to shift out of place drastically if the flux bubbles after you've placed the solder on the joint.

1)what kind of alcohol? does methanol work ok? 2)what is the ratio of the solution 3)what is green flux? 4)can gold jewlery be brazed or is that too hot and will melt the gold? 5)also the lower the karat the higher the melting point of gold? 6)are you matching the karat of the ring? 7)can silver be used instead?

What alcohol are you using, Chuck? Ethyl, methyl or vodka :-D I'm serious - I use vodka as a wetting agent in egg tempera painting and wondered if it would also work with boric acid soln. in jewellery making but maybe there are too many other ingredients in vodka to make it useful.

Marcos.. The easy solder is a good choice for a chain, and you have to be especially careful if it is a hollow chain. Before you know it you could end up with a puddle of gold :0 But the only reason I could think of is with the torch you are using it might be too broad of a flame, with chains you want to direct the heat in a pinpoint spot, so I would lower the levels if gas/oxy and just make a smaller, tighter flame. Not hotter, just a tighter flame.

Truly excellent question!! I have NEVER heard of using a flux as a quench- please, if you would be so kind, explain THAT!!! It was a wonderful video, totally different. Thanks so much.
@placidesulfurik5 жыл бұрын
Neither was it flux, nor did he quench the ring. He just dipped it in boric acid to cool it and prevent further oxidation and discoloration.

Love it. but I do not understand why you used the solution of boric acid and alcohol as a quench?
@MyBinaryLife8 жыл бұрын
quenching in water is too fast for some gold alloys and will make them brittle. quenching in denatured alcohol is a slower cooling quench. its like how you quench steel in oil rather than water.

I was really curious if there was such thing as gold solder. I'm glad to find out that there is! Can you do this process with a soldering pen?
@dadrules7149 жыл бұрын
+May McDonough Yes A soldering pen is simply a combination of gold solder and flux mixture. The heat process is the same. Not to be confused w/a "soldering iron" some people call a 'pen". That is used for electronics solder
@jennyk35919 жыл бұрын
+May McDonough ...Gold solder can be purchase from a jeweler's supply company, such as riogrande.com
@Circuitkraken8 жыл бұрын
most of thse "pens" are available at reputable companies that serve jewelers specifically. i would never recommend people buy gold or any metals from rio grande unless you are just a hobbyist or student. rio grande is NOT a metal source for true professionals and they do not wholesale the metal, they ask full market retail mark up. that can get very expensive very fast especially since wholesale prices are much lower than you think.

And you should be using Hard solder, instead of Easy solder. Easy solder has a lower melting point and doesn't make the joint as strong as Hard solder would. Easy solder will show seams and is more likely to crack and break as well. But like I said before.. A ordinary band should never be cut-sized, rather shrunk/stretched.

How do you keep from marring the metal with the ring bending pliers you used? I have some and they always mar the metal. Even when I cut out pieces of copper to cover the surfaces--it still marks the metal.

@182junglebook11 жыл бұрын
If its just a band you should have just shrunk it. Hardly ever should you have to cut-size a band. Unless of course there is a taper or diamonds, exc. But just a typical gold band shouldn't have to be cut sized.
