Sarah is exquisite! As Pat Neary said at the beginning of the rehearsal, this was a first run-through with little prep before hand. Steven McRae and Sarah together are just beautiful. Can't wait to see the airing. It was a treat, as well, hearing Sarah's wit and intellect shine so brilliantly.

Wow! What a treat to see this. I am a huge fan of the studio and the rehearsals. I seem to "see" into the core of the dancers, the choreography and the music in some greater way. The relaxed intimacy of the venue would seem to provide something extra special. Kind of like those old grainy black and white Avedon or David Bailey photographs from the 70's that would allow the observer some unforseen access beyond what "color" could ever afford. And everyone here was a delight. Loving The Royal all the way from California ! Cheers !

There's a really good documentary about Suzanne Farrell, which you might watch: 'Suzanne Farrell: Elusive Muse'. It tells the story of Balanchine's obsession with her. Or read her memoir. She was the most important ballerina of the NYC Ballet, and Balanchine's obsession with her caused lots of problems for other gifted dancers. But that wasn't Suzanne's fault.

While there Is no doubt that McCrae and Lamb are great dancers, their style, which I guess is the Royal Ballet Style, seems too lyrical and soft to me for Rubies...I am too used to the angular spikiness of the NYCB's interpretation. Nunes and her partner were magnificent in Diamonds

Marianela dances so beautifully here. For the actual performance posted on KZbin there was some criticism (including from me) that her style was wrong, too slow, too static. I think it must have been the fault of the conductor making the tempo too slow, because here she is ravishing and keeps everything in motion, just as it should be. I am so happy to see this, because I love her. (Who doesn't?)
@neelycrombie12637 жыл бұрын
I wish they would express that when going through fifth the hands always crossed each other. That would give a more Balanchine aesthetic. I do get what she is saying about the walk in the beginning. something arm wise is missing and upper body to . There are some clips of Sara Mearns in Diamonds and her walk is just stunning and so Balanchine. ( Backstage with Sara Mearns at the end shows the drama of diamonds) I can't believe i'm actually critiquing Marianela Nunez. Her and Sarah are off the charts amazing!! I've just seen too many clips of this ballet by NYCB.

Still looks like ROH doing Balanchine. There is something about the hip thrust. They are isolating the hip too much and Sarahs hands should be stronger and more open.
@islandhorsetaker7 жыл бұрын
Neely Crombie I actually like the fact that it looks like the Royal Ballet doing Balanchine. Yes, it's not exactly the "style" Balanchine loved but it's beautiful in it's own way. I too prefer the NYCB when it comes to Balanchine but RB does an amazing job too and I think it's nice that they do Balanchine with their own style, just a different way to interpret his choreography.
@neelycrombie12637 жыл бұрын
Why Thank you.. and the fact this will be aired in the movie theaters .. Kinda misrepresents the signature aesthetic of it all. I wish the repetiteurs would have them add a few Balanchine stylistic things. Like crossing the arms in front of the face when going through to fifth and opening the fingers with stronger hands. Diamonds is romantic but very strong and dramatic. This version is too soft... and its interesting.. I always thought Marianela Nunez to be a very dramatic dancer.. but i guess they were all character rolls Ive seen her in.
