Jewish ghetto in Venice | SLICE

In the ghettos of Venice the Jewish diasporas took refuge : jewish traditions, places of worship and cultures were practiced there on the sole condition they did not offend Christians. It took several years for Jews to build religious buildings as the serenity of their settlement was questioned many times. Nowadays Jews continue to meet in the ghettos of Venice, in places which have become emblematic for their community.

My grandma was a Jew from Venezia and my grandfather came from the South. She survived world War II during the Holocaust due to the Catholic church helping hide her.

venice had lost a valubable trading route. and was faceng bankrupcy. thats why it invited the jew a place to live

False, Venice was still powerful when the ghetto was first ensablished.

There were already many Roman Jews living in Italy before the decree that forced all Italian Jews to move to the foundry area. Also, whether it invited or not, the Jews of Spain and present day Turkey came there to avoid persecution

I'm descended(twice) from Bartholomew Tagliaferro who was born in this Jewish Ghetto and who later was sent by the Doge to England to play music for the English royals with other Italian Jewish/converso musicians like the Bassanos and Galliardellos(who I am also descended from). Pretty neat stuff.

@@erectilereptile7383 That is the direct translation, your feelings on this really don't matter. because these are Jews with a European experience in the diaspora, The same applies to Jews of Sefarad (Spain) or Mizrahi (Eastern) and many others. I'm guessing you are not a member of the tribe as this is basic Hebrew!

Ashkenazi is the old Hebrew word for Germany and Central Europe.
