The idea of Jewish pirates was popularised by Ed Kritzler's book Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean. Ed was a much-loved personality with a deep interest in Jamaican history, but how accurate was his research? As well as his work, there has been a short film, a number of articles, and the phenomenon is all over social media. How much truth is there to it? Who are the people presented as Jewish pirates, and what is the evidence for piracy?
Ton Tielen has reviewed the sources and has studied the Pallache and the Portuguese-Sephardic Cohen families. He has thirty years of experience in Sephardic research and is an expert on the Amsterdam Portuguese-Jewish archives. Ton is a founder-admin of The Sephardic Diaspora group on Facebook and co-host of Sephardic World. He was formerly an archivist of the Netherlands Red Cross.
