As a native New Yorker, I seem to recall that in early NYC history, the Jews were forbidden to bear arms and serve as guards to protect the city. Instead they were required to pay a tax that was supposed to go for that service. One Jew wrote to the powers that be in England and demanded his right as a citizen to be able to serve the community in such a way. It was granted and I think there is a statute to him as well as a h.s. bearing his name. I'm tempted to say Asher Lev but I'm sure that's wrong.

He’s from Canada so I think we can guess what his views on the topic are. The right to bear arms (gun ownership in particular) is not that controversial in the Orthodox Jewish community. After the Supreme Court’s Bruen decision states with the largest Jewish populations - NY, NJ, CA etc - now must grant carry permits. Ever increasing numbers of Jews are availing themselves of that right.

That is between the second temple's destruction and the holocaust. I claimed that the exile was horrific, and my friend says that between those two events it wasn’t all that bad for Jews, except for a pogrom here and there and so on. I read that the romans killed about 580,000 during the last rebellion, And we are taught that in the holocaust, about 6,000,000 were killed. What happened in between? For instance, if one can know how many jews lived in the world during the crusades, and how many were killed by crusaders… Well, you see my point, and I am sure you will know how to answer my vague question in the best way possible. I was doing some research on רבינו יצחק מוינה the author of the אור זרוע this chol hamoed . And it seems he had a number of teachers. Besides being counted as one of the חסידי אשכנז and studied under רבינו יהודה החסיד in Regensburg , and the ראבי״ה in Bonn .Also under רבינו שמחה in Speyer . He also studied in France by R’ Shamshon of Coucy known as the ש״ר מקוצי . And it’s quite obvious that only in France where he studied was the yellow badge in-forced . He had a discussion of why one may wear the אופן or wheel on the Shabbat and not considered carrying.
