Listening to these songs brings back memories of my parents who I miss so dearly especially my mother who passed away too young and suddenly ....sad to think we're the last generation to enjoy or undestand these Yiddish songs.

@@Ursugarspice I'm Scottish and not Jewish, but with enough knowledge of Germanic languages to appreciate Yiddish (with a little help) - which I do, hugely! These songs seem to touch my very soul - I know these people, their hopes and fears, their loves, their sorrows, exactly as if they were here with me now, my own kith and kin. I don't know why that should be, exactly, but it is probably because of a shared experience of poverty and the struggles - and the joys - of my early life I find reflected in the words of so many Yiddish songs. My strong feeling is that we owe a duty to these people to keep the memory of their rich language and culture alive, which the Nazis tried to wipe from the face of the Earth. Not only for that reason but also because it enriches our culture too.

I love her voice, and her Yiddish is exquisite. Given the text, I find the rather jaunty manner a little odd. I suspect, though, that it is historically accurate, and that the contrast between the lyrics and manner of singing is meant to be mordant, ironic, the way German Expressionism typically was (the work of Kurt Weill, for example). In any case, this is a wonderful performance!
